Rush all the way... Seeing KISS on the list was hilarious. And I consider Mahavishnu Orchestra a jazz fusion band, not prog really.

there was a band called Greenslade. Dave Greenslade played in it, but the two should not be confused with each other

I think I mentoned this before but back in the 1970's I had some friends who were members of The Kiss Army fan club and they actually thought bands like Yes, King Crimson and Gentle Giant sucked. They thought that Peter Criss was a drum god! No word of a lie, these guys would laugh at me if I brought over a Mahavishnu Orchestra record! |
Let me guess... they would accuse Cobham of being all over the place
On topic: Mahavishnu, followed by King Crimson and Dream Theater.

My vote goes to Gentle Giant, there is no other band that has the skill to create such a mish mash of sounds, from instruments and vocals, wehere all members are multi instrumentalist and sing in a round like they do.
And you know what they were even able to do this stuff live.....WOW!!!!!
I would say King Crismson is next.

I'd say Dream Theater...
1. Mike Portnoy is definitely a technical master! there are many talented drummers out there but in terms of technique and speed I cant think of many that are better than him.
2. Of course John Myung is a great bassist, LaBrie an amazing singer, and Rudess a keyboard WIZARD, but I've just never heard anyone playing in such technical perfection like John Petrucci... Thats why I chose Dream over the rest... I'm not a huge fan of great big speedy guitar solos and riffs, I think "feel" and soul are way more important than speed, but I have NEVER heard anyone play such complex paterns and riffs THAT FAST...
Maybe I just didnt hear the right bands yet, but Dream are definitely the best when it comes to technique...

Gentle Giant, from that list, above and beyond.
But the Enid are probably even more technically brilliant.
Shub Niggurath have a lot going for them too.
Dream Theater are only technically brilliant when it comes to playing techniques - which is very, very different to overall musical and compositional technique.

Yes with Bruford in the fold was really the tops , but once Alan White got in, they were not so mighty (although I appreciate his work)
Was a though decision on this list between Yes and Mahavishnu.
But on the Archives I would say Return To Forver
Corea, Di Meola and Clarke! Toooooo much for me!

I've been mad about Mahavishnu for over 30 years, but if you've seen DT
Live at Budokan DVD you know how awesomely talented these guys are.
