Been spinning a lot of Franco Battiato lately...which lead to more Italian music..and then some Argentinian because Luis Alberto Spinetta (RIP) reminds me a little of Franco...though mostly in the fragile, soothing and very emotional way they sing. Somehow akin to if Neil Young had been born in a warmer climate.
Franco Battiato - Fetus Franco Battiato - Pollution Franco Battiato - Sulle Corde Di Aries Franco Battiato - Clíc Procession - Fiaba (I think you’d like this Steve. Their debut Frontiera is more guitar-driven and rocky whilst this one pulls out the moog and various windinstruments...all delivered with a wonderful melodic touch that just oozes Italy in the best way possible) Pescado Rabioso - Artaud Spinetta Jade - Alma de Diamante Air - Love 2 Amen Dunes - Freedom (I am still quite smitten by this album. One of those ‘nice tune followed by an even better one..and then somehow mid-album it goes up a notch and the rest is just some of the finest “singer-song writer stuff” I’ve heard in a loooooon while. The instrumentation is a big part of it and although simple on the surface it seems like it’s comprised of several layers of guitars, organs and oh lordy that harmonica. Really dig the lisp in his voice too. Adds a nice touch to the proceedings. ‘Daddy was the coolest kid in school, he was always in the alley sniffin’ glue’ ) Invisible - s/t Faust - The Faust Tapes (Haven’t listened to this for years. Finally got myself a cd copy! Just as mad as I remember it to be..but purposely so and with a lot of great tracks thrown in for good measure. I would love to have been able to watch these guys record this thing. Hah!) |

@David, I’m putting that Procession on my wish list based on your rec. There are few things nicer than quality italian sounds (including the sound of slurping spaghetti).
Re Amen Dunes, I still cannot fully understand why I am so taken by his music. On paper, it’s not in my wheelhouse at all (the mere idea of a new “singer-songwriter” usually makes me grimace all by itself). But honestly, when this stuff is done well, tastefully, and with great atmosphere (a big plus for this guy), it can really move mountains. It’s been a few years since Freedom came out. I hope there’s another even better one on the way. |

Re: Procession. Just placed an order with Wayside. For vinyl! Which I’m trying to focus on more lately vs CDs, for a couple of reasons. Vinyl seems to carry more of a personal touch/pride of ownership, and besides, I’ll have to seriously revamp my CD collection storage & shelving if I get many more. For vinyl I have much more room to grow.

Agreed....especially when the skies are grey something like a little RPI can really pull out the sun. What you just wrote about Amen Dunes perfectly matches my thoughts. I dig it way more than what I thought I’d do. Just goes to show how stickers can fool you. Regarding the whole LP~CD situation: I’ve been thinking something similar in that I need to get myself some kind of specially designed cd closet/cabinet. As it is everything seems to be towering in on me..whereas I’ve got plenty room for more vinyl. I also agree about the ‘reverence-factor’. It is way more intuitive for me to baby an LP versus a CD. The former is just more involving and granted a little less robust. Also love the whole ‘seance’ around vinyl. Edited by Guldbamsen - May 23 2021 at 02:33 |

Been digging more Sabbath and Marillion the last 3 days
Black Sabbath— Paranoid (dvd audio ) Black Sabbath— Heaven and Hell (2021 remaster. It absolutely terrific. The best version yet. So happy with the sound. DIO’s voice reigns so truthfully. ) Marillion — Clutching At Straws ( original 1987 mix. Blu ray audio ) Marillion — Clutching At Straws ( 2018 remix. I like this best. Again. Fish vocals are more true to life. Bass is tighter as well. ) Black Sabbath— Paranoid (2009 stereo remaster. ) Monster Magnet— Dopes to infinity ( the low end on this album is terrific. A definite headphone listen. ) David Bowie— Let’s Dance. ( I really like it actually. The Nile Rogers production is awesome. ) Dead Can Dance— The Serpents Egg ( SACD. I needed some Host of Seraphim to level me out. ) |

Gimmie my headphones now!!! 🎧🤣

^Tasty selection there Steve
I only have up until Seeds Of Love by Tears For Fears. Is it worth exploring any further? I’ve thought about Raoul a couple of times but never quite got around to actually purchasing him. That was a nice sentence eh Thanks for the reminder btw. I gotta get myself a cd copy of Hijack. It’s been a long time since I last span that. Yesterday: Beck - Odelay (Yes! Hah...so strange actually. I really liked what I heard from Beck back in the mid 90s..yet never bought any of his albums(?). So I’ve remedied that and am slightly over the moon about discovering an artist a couple of decades later on. The music is like a Can album driving straight into this strange prairie hip-hop from way out west. This is the sort of album that can make both old trashcan winos and hip lawyers do the jig) Tower of Power - Bump City Gorillaz - Song Machine | Season One (I’m really getting into these guys...again a couple of decades later on) David Bowie - Tin Machine The Orb - COW // Chill Out World Xploding Plastix - The Donca Matic Singalongs Ulver - Flowers Of Evil (Gotta admit I find these recent “pop albums” of Ulver’s extremely alluring. It’s still Ulver but more..80s romantic and electronic altogether) |

@David - Elemental and especially Raoul (unless I’m entertaining him that night) are definitely worth it - you can probably get them cheap too. The only things really missing are Curt’s vocals (not a huge loss) and the presence of huge 80s hits (a tad more problematic, but surmountable). I only picked up both within the last 2 years, so I’m no expert on them, but I’ve always enjoyed them while they’re on, even if I can’t point to any obvious standout tracks. Anyway, no reason not to get them if you like the first 3. Roland’s attention to detail is still on full display throughout.
