a band that should definitely be in the poll is Gong. they had the in my opinion best musicians in prog on 2 positions (the late Pierre Moerlen on drums and Didier Malherbe on flutes and saxes), and bass player Mike Howlett and guitarist Steve Hillage were by no means slouches. the Howlett/Moerlen rhythm section is arguably one of the best rhythm sections in prog ever. anyone who doesn't know them should listen to the only mp3 of Gong in the archives, in which the rhythm section is in absolute top form (and Malherbe and Hillage too). one of the best tracks of Gong ever

Mahavishnu Orchestra songs are the tonghest to play... seriously, these guys are unbeatable on the technic, but most of what they do is improvised, so no one know what Fripp could do in a fusion band... I can't really tell which one I am for, but it's most likely MO.

I'm surprised Focus got no vote. What they do is brillant...

Or should I say The Ramons?

Anyway I belive that an acomplished musician with proper study can play almost any part.So for me is a mater of compositions and nothing more. For example Potnoy has more complex parts than Peart but thats becouse that's the kind of drums that the music of Theater needs. I think Pearts solos are technicaly better. That's just an example. I only want to say that what a musician plays is limited by the sound of his band. I f Cobham was on Deep Purple he wouldn't play like this and that wouldn't mean he wouldn't have the ability to do it.

Rush, Yes and KC, though of course the Mahavishnu Orchestra, being mostly a jazz-fusion group, would be far ahead of everybody as regards technical brilliance.

Technically brilliant? Good as they are surely you can't really pick Dream Theater over Mahavishnu Orchestra....

And no Flower Kings/Spock's Beard/Transatlantic either???

(I wish people wouldn't start a poll when they havn't a clue about the subject matter. There have been a few too many of these on the forum already)

Colosseum should be at that list - the Hiseman, Heckstall-Smith, Greenslade, Clempson, Clarke, Farlowe was absolutely fantastic.

About King Crimson: only great musicians were members of Crimson (with the exception of Gordon Haskell, which was only a decent bass player, and an awful singer).

Well you missed ELP!!!!! I cant think of a more technically brilliant group. Keith Emseson is brillent enough compared to all other bands really. Of course I havent heard The Mahavishnu Orchestra so im probably wrong.
Well McGarnical Billy is dead! They slit his throat from ear to ear!

Of those, King Crimson for me, but there are better and more talented (I haven't heard enough Mahavishnu to say that they are the most "brilliant").

I can't believe someone voted for Kiss.  My vote was for Rush...although, I would have to say that Gentle Giant came a very close second.  I also can't believe that DT is at the top.  I like DT and think they are fairly proficient technically, but nowhere near the masters when it comes to chops (with the possible exception of Portnoy).
I can understand your anger at me, but what did the horse I rode in on ever do to you?
