As soon as the health care bill passed, I felt much better knowing the government will be taking care of me forever and I have nothing to worry about. :)

Too bad some weirdo can just come up and shoot you and all your classmates because neither you nor your teachers will have any legal means of defending yourselves.  Unhappy

You can call the cops and watch them barricade the school and wait for the shooter to run out of ammo and kill himself.

Gotta suck to run out of ammo and then try to kill himself.

I realized that after I posted it and hoped nobody would catch it.

If the killer is crazy enough, he can bash his head against a wall till death... I'm sure it's doable...

Obviously, it's also incredibly stupid and wrong. But I'm happy the trend at least in that state is to promote gun ownership, not to forbid it. Though they could've done it in a less.... stupid manner.

That's not really the point.  Basically, they figure if the government can make people buy health insurance to protect themselves, the government can make people buy guns to protect themselves.  Liberals won't go for that latter idea, though.  The idea is to show how stupid and wrong it is to make people buy goods or services they may not want.

(Though it would be kinda cool to see what happens to the crime rate in that state if such a thing did pass Big smile)

In my country, a brother of a friend of a friend of mine was murdered in cold blood, apparently to rob him. Now, I was thinking: did he ever have any chance? What was the only way he would ever have had to defend himself? Outlawed by the almighty power. There's something that is so easy to grasp: police are not omniscient or omnipresent, they can't be everywhere. Just as an economic planner can't foresee every possible situation, thus making no-planning the only reasonable plan, an armed force can't possibly be everywhere, even if they somehow had all their personnel in the streets. Criminals will always find a way and a place to act. The only answer is ti make every person responsible of his own safety, isn't it?

Alas, such an idea would be preposterous in my collective-minded Messiah-expecting country. Good thing here in the US (and in Switzerland Confused ) things are different, but governments try to eliminate that. And outlets like CNN are quick to jump into the bandwagon of "depend on the police, not in yourself"

I still don't own or haven't fired a gun though... Cry

Well I don't think they're serious. They're mocking the premise of the health care bill.

Oh I see properly now. I get the point though it will get less publicity that would be desirable.

The crime rate would plummet.

Now it would be great if every person forced to buy a gun would be allowed to get their healthcare by using them... TongueClown

That's basically the best defense of gun ownership there is.  Something as fundamental as personal safety shouldn't be forcefully removed from anyone.

But then, I've argued with people who believe that if you fire on someone who threatens your family's life, you should get punished for it, because killing is inherently wrong (never mind the fact that the family was threatened with death).  I don't want to be too presumptuous, but it seems like there's some degree of apathy towards victims and potential victims of crimes--self-defense just isn't a good enough justification anymore.  The collective good of society (which in my opinion is worthless without the good of the individuals therein being placed first) is more important.

It's funny because arguments for gun control fail on every level--pragmatic, moral, etc., and yet it is still so widely endorsed.

And I'm quite sure you don't always even have to fire the gun to defend yourself or your family...

lol so much trolling

And that's actually pretty interesting. Obviously you guys gun laws are bad, but how about law saying everyone MUST have a gun? Are you on board with that? I mean it's the guvment telling the people what to do.
Even if this was a intended to be a mockery, I do believe there are are towns that have mandatory gun ownership.
