What's so great about the Beatles? I think they are highly overrated. I think if one band deserves to be called the greatest ever, it should be the varying line-ups of Frank Zappa's "band".

the grateful dead hands down.....btw, i hate how everyone says its the beatles because they know all those songs...teh beatles are the backstreet boys after theyve paid soembody to teach them an instrument....i hate even more how they are constantly credited wiuth being the "start" of rock and roll, they werent....have yu people ever heard of chuck berry or little richard?rock and roll was started among black american artists struggling to break the chains of r&b and jazz and usher in a new sound that wasnt as derivative from teh classical approach |
I only noticed Reed's mention of them being the start, you're generalizing everyone by saying "I hate how everyone always says that the Beatles were the start of Rock and Roll". Sure, they didn't start it, but they were there in the beginning, they helped carve a path, back when rock and roll was considered a fad.

As a live band, there are only two:
Led Zeppelin and Queen
I saw both of them when they were "in their prime"....they are unsurpassed. NO group comes close....
but hell....you should have seen Yes last year!!!!!!!

I can understand they had a huge effect on music, but is the influence a band had the most important thing? I don't think so...

There is no greatest band of all time, but The Beatles are as good a choice as any.

The Beatles without a doubt are the saturation of the most influential period of music, by the most influential band. A complete phenomenon. However their reign was a period of early punk music that evolved into the epic Abby Road over a period of 6-7 years, so how could that brief enigma be considered the best. On the other hand, the band Rush is one of the most consistant bands of all time and have a 30 year reign but not one of their albums top the beatles from Rubber Soul through Abby Road.
So if not the Beatles or Rush for the given reasons, I vote KING Crimson as the greatest because they qualify both amazing standards.

I totally & utterly disagree
If you read my thread futher before i stated that they were actually the greatest band due to the greatest ever song writing of John & Paul,i did say as musicians alone they are not so hot...
But to claim that Rush were a more consistant band that is rubbish.Rush had a fine period around 'A farewell to the kings' but were no way consistant after the late 70's.Anyone can spew crap after crap out to keep a contract going...Buisness you see!
Although King Crimson are one of the bands in my top 10 i'm afraid that they were Beatles infuenced & if you actually read about the 'Lizard' album you'll find it's Beatles orientated.
Well blow me down. Is'nt that the beatles around that letter 'I'?

Yeah, I would say influence is very important. Influence is what has made legends out of musicians over the ages. From Mozart to Gershwin to Duke Ellington to Miles and to, yes, The Beatles. I'm not knocking Frank, he's one of my favs too. Great innovator and very unique and not to mention funny. But what separates The Beatles from everybody else was that while being innovative and audascious, they still were able to appeal to a massive audience unlike Frank (who did have a high regard for them too). Hell, back in '64 my grandmother liked them (except for the long hair).[

I was actually refering to Rush's consistancy as in their responsibility to their fans is of the most have ever seen. That is a statement hardly to be debated and everyone knows that 80's rush after Signals was pretty bad. If that wasn't implied now it is for those who like to argue, bring it
