This is an interesting question. What, in your opinion, is the all-time greatest band? Doesn't have to be prog. I'm just wondering, what do you think is the greatest band of all-time?

The Beatles are a good choice.

Personally, I think The Police were one of the best.

The Beatles were pop music pioneers, I agree.

Depends whether you are asking what bands people like the most, or what bands were technically the most influencial, innovative etc..

Personally I have not listerned to the Beatles for some years and to to be honest dont feel any urge to. The greatest band ever IMO are RUSH. In terms of musicianship, inspirational songs, originallity of sound (once they had grown out of their Zep fixation) and generally the pleasure their music has brought me over the years. I appreciate there will be few who agree with me.

In very close second place would be Genesis, for very similar reasons.

The Police are a good choice. Imagine a band like the Police trying to score a hit these days. They would be completely ignored, perhaps ridiculed. Imagine seeing musicians as good as they were playing live on TOTP in 2005. We can dream..

Give me a break. The Beatles????

I think that the "Fab 4" have very little in common with Genesis,Yes or ELP,musically.

There used to be a lad in my local pub who always drunk bitter. We got to discussing beer one evening and he confessed he didnt really like bitter, and preferred lager.I asked the obvious question to which he replied, well the lads would think I'm a wuss if I started drinking lager. This is how I view this situation where the Beatles are repeatedly cited as the greatest band ever on this forum.

The Beatles sold hundreds of millions of records, and good luck to them. When someone first invented the wheel life changed forever, but when you step up to your gleaming motor car in the morning, you might say "great set of wheels," but you certainly are not praising the lumps of rubber in each corner. The Beatles are certainly pioneers,of course, but just because they were in it at the start (they were the start) doesnt mean they are the greatest. We are talking about music here, which is a matter of taste, and we would not be on this forum if we preferred the type of poppy proto-psychedelic songs that the Beatles wrote.

Impossible to be in any way objective with a question such as this .

However -

If you absolutely had to pick a single band from the vast spectrum of music created since the idea of a band came about, I guess I'd have to go with The Beatles, if for no other reason than their huge influence on popular music at the time, and since their demise.

And anyone who doesn't put 'Abbey Road in their all time top 10 is a poo-head.

My favorite band is Yes, but if you want to make things a little bit more objective, I guess that no band will beat the Beatles. In terms of progression, variety of styles, intelligent compositions, great production, and: there would be no progrock without The Beatles.

As much as I love The Beatles, and believe me I DO! I wouldn't call them the "greatest" band ever. The most influential, I think would be the best description for them. "Greatest" is basically relevant and more subject to opinion.

The Beatles, without a doubt paved the way for just about everything we hear today. But the greatest? That's really overstating things.

Posted By: The Hemulen

The Beatles might be successful and more than a little influential, but for me, these chaps:

are the greatest band of all time. That's right. Gentle Giant are the greatest band of all time. You heard me.

Why? Well, apart from all five being hugely adept musicians, capable of playing countless instruments to astonishingly high standards, their music pushed the boundaries of modern composition more effectively than any "modern classical" composer, avant garde nutter writing symphonies for choir and toaster or indeed any other rock band by drawing on more genres than you can shake a stick at, adapting them to their own unique sound, arranging and composing their work in a supremely rich and dense manner and all the while writing songs that YOU COULD SING ALONG TO. They could be catchy, quirky, powerful, humourous, heart-wrenchingly beautiful and downright surreal, but they always always always sounded like themselves. Okay, so they produced some dud albums. I'd maintain that so did the Beatles. They didn't have the money, the far-reaching success of the former, but artistically no one can top them. And what's music about - money or art?

ErmmI like many, many bands, but the "greatest" of all time would have to be the Beatles. Their influence was ENORMOUS, their material of a consistently very high calibre, and no band was ever that huge before, since, or will be in the future, I'm sure.Smile

(Note that this is not the same thing as my favourite band of all time -- that's a tough choice, but I'd probably say Genesis, or the Who.)Stern Smile

Yep Peter and anyone who says the same I totally agree, with you, THE BEATLES ARE AND WILL BE THE WORLDS GREATEST BAND EVER!!!!!!!!!!The influence they have had in music in general, is amazing. You can ask many Prog artists which are their main inspiration or favorite band(s) and they will very possibly answer THE BEATLES. But QUEEN, or LED ZEPPELIN would come in very close second...

The Beatles hold the title as the best group ever, simply because they influenced everybody. Of course there was Elvis and Chuck Berry prior to them, however they didn't have the worldwide appeal of the fab four (In all fairness, the Beatles took those influences and melded into something new).

The key thing to take into account is how they evolved and stayed one step ahead of trends. In many cases they set the trends. No other group has defined an age like the Beatles as exemplified by Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Peppers and Abbey Road.

Everyone that followed was merely carrying on what they established. I think they are to modern music what Shakespeare is to English literature.

I don't know about Zep (or Queen for that matter) as the second greatest. When it comes to the second greatest band of all time (which is where the lines start to blur) I have a very unconventional approach. Usually, I pick Floyd.

I love it when you talk crap Reed

I'm gonna stick my neck out here then. The beatles were the greatest ever Band not in terms of musicianship as they themselves were not to ace with the instrumentico's.

But But But John Lennon & Paul McCartney at their peak were the greatest ever & i still think this now,the Greatest ever song writers,Together with George Martin created an absolute Legend of a band.Your talking the major landmark in Rock music.

You can argue till the cows come home cos it's true..Your telling me that the majority of bands at the beginig of the fashionable progressive scene did'nt get inspiration for the Beatles?

I was only listerning to Barclay James Harvest ''Everyone is everybody else' album today & what a simularity,i know the release is 1974 but you can hear the influence.

What's so great about the Beatles? I think they are highly overrated. I think if one band deserves to be called the greatest ever, it should be the varying line-ups of Frank Zappa's "band".

I only noticed Reed's mention of them being the start, you're generalizing everyone by saying "I hate how everyone always says that the Beatles were the start of Rock and Roll". Sure, they didn't start it, but they were there in the beginning, they helped carve a path, back when rock and roll was considered a fad.

The Beatles without a doubt are the saturation of the most influential period of music, by the most influential band.  A complete phenomenon.  However their reign was a period of early punk music that evolved into the epic Abby Road over a period of 6-7 years, so how could that brief enigma be considered the best.  On the other hand, the band Rush is one of the most consistant bands of all time and have a 30 year reign but not one of their albums top the beatles from Rubber Soul through Abby Road.

So if not the Beatles or Rush for the given reasons, I vote KING Crimson as the greatest because they qualify both amazing standards.

I totally & utterly disagree

If you read my thread futher before i stated that they were actually the greatest band due to the greatest ever song writing of John & Paul,i did say as musicians alone they are not so hot...

But to claim that Rush were a more consistant band that is rubbish.Rush had a fine period around 'A farewell to the kings' but were no way consistant after the late 70's.Anyone can spew crap after crap out to keep a contract going...Buisness you see!

Although King Crimson are one of the bands in my top 10 i'm afraid that they were Beatles infuenced & if you actually read about the 'Lizard' album you'll find it's Beatles orientated.

Well blow me down. Is'nt that the beatles around that letter 'I'?

Yeah, I would say influence is very important. Influence is what has made legends out of musicians over the ages. From Mozart to Gershwin to Duke Ellington to Miles and to, yes, The Beatles. I'm not knocking Frank, he's one of my favs too. Great innovator and very unique and not to mention funny. But what separates The Beatles from everybody else was that while being innovative and audascious, they still were able to appeal to a massive audience unlike Frank (who did have a high regard for them too). Hell, back in '64 my grandmother liked them (except for the long hair).[

I was actually refering to Rush's consistancy as in their responsibility to their fans is of the most have ever seen.  That is a statement hardly to be debated and everyone knows that 80's rush after Signals was pretty bad.  If that wasn't implied now it is for those who like to argue, bring it

I had thought of answering this band. Gentle Giant is one of the bands that indeed has the most artistic level on the entire progressive rock scope. Only Frank Zappa's band rivals these guys. So if I had to choose those, I would be torn up which one. Joren pointed to Frank Zappa, and rightly so, because [the yellow snow crystals...] there is no band as tight and musically powerful as his bands. Not even Gentle Giant. But Gentle Giant has the 'bandness' which I miss with FZ. His songs are a bit too static for me I guess. I'm sure Joren will rebuke me on that

To all of you Beatle loving fools out there. There is way more to a band than influence. Indeed, if we are talking about 'greatest' band than it is mostly about how the band is! in that regard, the beatles are a bunch of overrated childish ninkapoops. And saying that they were the first is nonsense, because jazz was kicking musical arse before that and the first arsekicking progband was the first arsekicking progband. They didn't have the beatles as example to arsekicking, because they don't.

Get real

maybe it's a younger generation thing, its harder to appreciate they effect they had on music.

I can understand they had a huge effect on music, but is the influence a band had the most important thing? I don't think so...

Hell, back in '64 my grandmother liked them (except for the long hair).[[/QUOTE]

So the "massive audience" they appealed to is an important thing?

I DON'T CARE ABOUT WHAT THE MASSES THINK, I hink for myself, and I think the Beatles are overrated (although I DON'T deny the massive influence they had on pop music).

There is actually this TF show in France "nouvelle Star" where they reduce from week to week 30.000 potential pop stars (everybody can be a star for 15 minutes) to the one and onlyNumber One.

I think this is realy a mirror of our society, instead of pointing out individual particularities, you have to choose a "winner" who reflects the majority.  We have had a lot of polls, best this, best that but Yanns question :  Greatest band of all times reflects our state of mind in excellence, because it implies the existence of an absolute measure.

My personal favourite would be Gentle Giant, but that was not the question. On the other hand I love filing music, (I am the guy in High Fidelity , I just bought new shelfs and I'am already elaborating a new classification system) I am a typical "product" of our society, always comparing, classifying : is this the best product I get for my money, are the new boxes worth the price, can I get a cheaper flight with this company...

So yes, The Beatles , I agree with Reed, what they have done at their time in their categorie is cool, but then ... is there  a  Greatest band of all times?

No such thing as THE GREATEST BAND EVER...As for the Fab4 - Overrated and repetitively boring. They made 5-6 pretty good pop tunes and thats it. Funny nobody mentioned the ROLLING STONES ! (LOL)...Or the RAMONES for that matter.

PROG:  KING CRIMSON

HARD ROCK/CLASSIC ROCK: LED ZEPPELIN

METAL: BLACK SABBATH

but there are so many good bands...

Beatles are great, they pioneered some prog ideas, but frankly,  their work is pop-rock, never prog.

Say what you think, not what you think you would be expected to say as a "serious music connoisseur."

The greatest band of all time=your favourite band of all timeConfused

That is obvious to me-because you cannot quantify "greatest"- that title is subjective.

However,if the question demanded the most influential rock band of all time,my reply would be:

The Beatles. Of course. No real argument with that.Big smile

This is one of the reasons I asked this question in the first place, Reed. I wanted to see if people can differentiate their favorite band from a band they recognize as the greatest band of all time.

who knows?

The title of Greatest Rock band of all time would be a combination of popularity vote, nostalgia and intellectual snobbery.

Of course my favourite band is Rush.
