I like PT alot but right now the CD I listen to most is Bacio della Medusa. A lot of different opinions here for something that is unarguable.

Well I don't need you to take me seriously, you listen to Blue Oyster Cult. ;-)
But I will end this now as well since I have the feeling a banhammer is lurking in the shadows. ;-) |
I listen to Blue Oyster Cult too, and I'll tell you something else: I added them to the site's database last year. Do you have anything to tell me too?

Top Nowadys Proggers
When it comes down to just plain musicianship
Agollach- Atmospheric Death Metal Little Atlas- Prog/ Rock Anekdoten- Experimental / Progressive / Psychedelic Winds- Metal / Progressive / Rock Planet X- Jazz Fusion Opeth- Metal / Progressive Gojira- Death Metal Porcupine Tree- Heavy Prog Light Vocals and my new favorite- The Gang Font- Jazz Fusion
Really though you compare Bands that may be the best at what they do. But porcupine tree is definitely the best of its new kind. I don't think that it is the best Heavy Prog band just because they are too poppy. But amazing musicians none the less.

Good Lord, you've heard of the Gang Font? Are you from Minnesota? The only reason I know who they are is because their bassist, the former bassist of Husker Du (but I'm guessing you knew that) owns a restaurant that we like to go to and I found an advertisement on the restaurant website for the Gang Font. I was curious, went to their myspace to find that they were influenced by Mission of Burma (one of my favorite groups) and King Crimson. I was intrigued and bought the album.
I Was going to write a review of it, but I thought the band needed to be added to the archives to do so.

I'd love to Hawkcwg, but I don't have a myspace account!
To stay on topic, I should add that I think the following are the best modern progressive bands: Porcupine Tree, Riverside, Opeth and Oceansize (but I haven't heard alot of the bands others have listed).

if 'nowadays' includes the last five years or so; the Tangent, NeBeLNeST, Niacin, Wobbler, Planet X, Spastic Ink, Don Caballero... and for lesser-knowns Le Silo, Flat 122, Aviva, Sleep Terror, Zundapp, Kingfisher Sky

Van der Graaf Generator if you count older bands that are still around, but in terms of bands that have come into existence in recent years, then my favourites are:
The Mars Volta, Explosions in the Sky, Giant Squid, Miasma and the Carousel of Headless Horses, Indig I, Unexpect, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Coheed and Cambria, Muse,

Porcupine Tree is my favorite "prog" band from nowadays, for various reasons. One, Steven Wilson is an amazing songwriter. He really shines in this category, and though he's a simple guitar player, hardly any other guitar player has matched the feeling I feel from his playing. BUT, Porcupine Tree means a lot to me as a band, because they were the first band I had listened to with a prog label upon them, and they were so special compared to everything I was listening to. PT changed my thoughts about music, got me into other sorts of prog, and now I'm into bands like Opeth, Van der Graaf Generator, King Crimson, Dream Theater, Caravan, Gentle Giant, etc.(Every category of prog really, I can always look past a bands flaws for their strong points and appreciate them.)
But ARE they prog? The answer is, well, not really. But I can tell you a lot of other artists that have the prog label that are less proggy. PT is just an incredible rock band, that people put a prog label on because they are so talented. Like someone said about In Absentia, some of it sounds like a modern rock album, and it does somewhat. PT's melodies, song structures, and overall sound makes them an extremely accessible band, and they're not as experimental and abstract as most prog. Musically, they're also very simple compared to other prog bands. Maybe this is why some find them so boring, when they're used to hearing extremely complex and abstract prog. But I believe I have read that even Steven Wilson himself has stated, that he thinks PT is just a rock band, and the complexity lies within the production. So are they a prog band? Well, make your own judgement. I think by prog's real standards, they are not, but because of the inclusion of some really not-even-close-to-prog bands into the prog category, it should be okay to classify them as prog.
So, who is the best progressive band these days? No one is the best. For me, PT is because I like them the best. And thats what everyone should, and probably are basing their responses off of. This would be better in my opinion as a poll, but obviously there are too many bands! And even if you put up a million of them, you know someone would declare an ultra-obscure prog band as their favorite that wasn't on the poll list. But I know some of us love the feeling of listening to a really good obscure prog band and being able to go tell everyone about them. I know I do ![Smile Smile](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif)
Anyways, this is my first post in the forums, so hopefully I didn't make a fool out of myself or something ![LOL LOL](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif)
And hello everybody!

What`s the difference, would I change your mind, hmmm, that`s what I thought, I have more fun and enjoyment out of exploring who could be the best rather than who is the best, I like porcupine tree but to agree he is the best would be "fear of a blank Progarchives" because who would want to hear the rest and so onward in the search for the Best
