I think Porcupine Tree is unarguably the best when we spoke about nowadays?
What do you think?

I think your initial statement actually encourages argument. Your blanket statement along with the implied challenge of it being unarguable will bristle the fur of many of the posters here.

I would agree that PT is among the best of the newer prog bands, but not the best. There are a lot of great new bands out there. Among my favorites are The Tangent, Rocket Scientists (I wish they were more prolific), The Flower Kings (they could be a bit less prolific, but they're still great), Spock's Beard (suffered a decline when Morse left, but came back strong I think with their latest s/t release), Magenta, Mostly Autumn, Discipline/Matthew Parmenter, Riverside, Willowglass (fine Genesis-inspired instrumental symphonic prog), and yes, Porcupine Tree.

I agree Doc! PT is in my top ten and the other bands you mentioned are equally as good. I would add Opeth and Meshuggah also. Plus Pendragon's new one is fantastic. Which has moved them up on my list. Oresund Space Collective is a great new space rock band. It's great to see more bands jumping on the prog ship and keeping the flame alive. Long live Prog n' Roll!!!

Nothing is unarguable. I am among those who think that PT is good, but nothing special. I much prefer bands like The Tangent, Flower Kings, Echolyn, Pendragon, Phideaux, etc. The symphonic leanings of these bands speak more to me, someone who grew up worshipping Yes, Pink Floyd, ELP, and similar artists.

If I had to choose one 'modern' prog band, I'd go for The Mars Volta. Though I am aware they can be something of an acquired taste, I think they are very original and exciting. As for PT, I don't really see anything special in them, though I occasionally enjoy listening to them.

PT are fine - nothing special but worth a listen.
Mostly Autumn are brilliant, both live and recorded. Karnataka are also excellent. These two also have some excellent ofshoots (Breathing Space and Panic Room). IQ are an old band but they are also fabulous on CD; haven't seen them live yet, but will asap. Riverside are excellent and the new Pendragon release seems very promising. Magenta are good; Iona still produce wonderful music but seem to have gone into a period of hibernation.
So PT are a fair way down my list.

Breathing Space is excellent!
Coming Up For Air is even better than the Iain Jennings "Breathing Space" album. Hope they will continue on long-term. And I love Sparnenn's voice. Up there with Booth and Findlay.

This thread is ridiculous because:
It is not a poll
PT are barely prog in my eyes--and even if they definitively are, they aren't bringing anything new or interesting in the slightest to the table, unlike other prog bands. Not that that makes it bad music, but it shocks me that the poor man's unholy child of Pink Floyd and Opeth are so resoundingly popular here. Does anybody else think half of In Abstentia sounds like "normal" modern rock? When I first heard Blackest Eyes I thought I was listening to freaking Breaking Benjamin. And before the legion attacks: I am only responding in the same fashion he posted. ;-)
You are using both the words "best" and "unarguable".

Porcupine Tree does nice Floyd-influenced pop with prog elements. But #1 current prog band??? Not so much.
Opeth are probably the most popular band doing prog or prog-related music right now. Others have mentioned some other more traditional style proggers making great music now. I'll put in another vote for Beardfish among those.

Good Lord, you've heard of the Gang Font? Are you from Minnesota? The only reason I know who they are is because their bassist, the former bassist of Husker Du (but I'm guessing you knew that) owns a restaurant that we like to go to and I found an advertisement on the restaurant website for the Gang Font. I was curious, went to their myspace to find that they were influenced by Mission of Burma (one of my favorite groups) and King Crimson. I was intrigued and bought the album.
I Was going to write a review of it, but I thought the band needed to be added to the archives to do so.

Porcupine Tree is my favorite "prog" band from nowadays, for various reasons. One, Steven Wilson is an amazing songwriter. He really shines in this category, and though he's a simple guitar player, hardly any other guitar player has matched the feeling I feel from his playing. BUT, Porcupine Tree means a lot to me as a band, because they were the first band I had listened to with a prog label upon them, and they were so special compared to everything I was listening to. PT changed my thoughts about music, got me into other sorts of prog, and now I'm into bands like Opeth, Van der Graaf Generator, King Crimson, Dream Theater, Caravan, Gentle Giant, etc.(Every category of prog really, I can always look past a bands flaws for their strong points and appreciate them.)
But ARE they prog? The answer is, well, not really. But I can tell you a lot of other artists that have the prog label that are less proggy. PT is just an incredible rock band, that people put a prog label on because they are so talented. Like someone said about In Absentia, some of it sounds like a modern rock album, and it does somewhat. PT's melodies, song structures, and overall sound makes them an extremely accessible band, and they're not as experimental and abstract as most prog. Musically, they're also very simple compared to other prog bands. Maybe this is why some find them so boring, when they're used to hearing extremely complex and abstract prog. But I believe I have read that even Steven Wilson himself has stated, that he thinks PT is just a rock band, and the complexity lies within the production. So are they a prog band? Well, make your own judgement. I think by prog's real standards, they are not, but because of the inclusion of some really not-even-close-to-prog bands into the prog category, it should be okay to classify them as prog.
So, who is the best progressive band these days? No one is the best. For me, PT is because I like them the best. And thats what everyone should, and probably are basing their responses off of. This would be better in my opinion as a poll, but obviously there are too many bands! And even if you put up a million of them, you know someone would declare an ultra-obscure prog band as their favorite that wasn't on the poll list. But I know some of us love the feeling of listening to a really good obscure prog band and being able to go tell everyone about them. I know I do
Anyways, this is my first post in the forums, so hopefully I didn't make a fool out of myself or something

For Porcupine Tree is not a good example of what progressive rock is. I love this band but I admit they are not so adventurous. A band like Oceansize is more ambitious musically than PT I feel.

For my tastes, the best modern progressive bands commonly are found in Avant Prog, and there are many great ones. I'm going to give a nod to a modern progressive band that is still active and found in the Jazz-Rock Fusion category: One Shot.

For my tastes, the best modern progressive bands commonly are found in Avant Prog, and there are many great ones. I'm going to give a nod to a modern progressive band that is still active and found in the Jazz-Rock Fusion category: One Shot.

2008 ../album.asp?id=19091 - Dark Shot 4.91 (2 ratings) | Aranis is a fabulous chamber band.
Although Volapuk hasn't released any albums in some years, it doesn't get better than these, in my opinion.

What do you think? | Porcupine Tree's great and their easily one of the best. However, I think Dream Theater and anything related to Neal Morse is slightly better.

Please do, the two Volapuk records Logan listed are outstanding. I love One Shot - need to order their newest.

I love Porcupine Tree- however;
If they could shy away from the hundreds of side projects, and put more effort into their stuff, they could start releasing masterpieces.

PT are undeniably a great band and they are standing up to the test of time quite well.
Of the lesser knowns, I think RITUAL is a great band [ check out 'The Hemulic Voluntary Band ' ] and also KARMAKANIC [ about to feast on ' Who's the Boss....' ].
------------- Looking still the same after all these years...
