I've never counted (too busy listening) but I would estimate my LP collection at 2000+ and my CD collection at 1300 or so. There's not a great deal of duplication between the two. My problem is that I am an out of control consumer rather than a collector. There is way too much good music out there that I haven't heard and I have too broad of tastes in music. There aren't too many genres that I don't like. Not that I like all the artists in any genre. I do have some refinement.

Duuuude, I could even begin to think of that. This kind of stuff doesn't even cross my mind, really!!
And further more, since my albums are never classified alphabetically .... I couldn't even answer you. >>> if you use the Search facilty (top right of your screen) you should find the thread we had on how we arrange them, so don't start a new one.

let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter keep our sand-castle virtues content to be a doer as well as a thinker, prefer lifting our pen rather than un-sheath our sword |

Hmm, just a guesstimate...
prolly about 150 vinyl records, 100 casettes, 800 CDs, and I have about 250G of music on my hard drive (a mix of stuff downloaded, copied from friends, and ripped from my own collection). ...oh, and 1 8-track tape (no, I'm not kidding. It got stuck in a junk drawer years ago and my perverse sense of humor restrained me from doing the humane thing and chucking it). It's a K-Tel compilation from the late 70's and has stuff like BOC, Robin Trower, and Boston on it...wonder if it still works... Edited by Nipsey88 - May 25 2007 at 11:04 |

101-150... I'm not sure how many exactly, but I know for sure that I have at least 100 original albums. Mostly studioalbums, some livealbums or dvds, a couple of cassettes and some vinyls. And also "a few" singles. Most of my albums are heavy metal - I'm a new fan of prog so I don't have that many prog albums. I have vinyls of all kinds of music. There are some jazz vinyls, classical music, Jethro Tull, Procol Harum, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden etc.

Several issues arise
a) storage - I now feel i have too many LPs, cassettes and CDs - so it's become a challenge to store and access them.
b) resale value - as mentioned above, since the resale value of all second hand (with a few exceptions) are so low, there's less incentive to clear stuff out hence the storage problem.
c) I prefer vinyl, regardless of quality (warped or cracked - within reason) but appreciate all three media for different reasons. I'm sure others face the same problem of not wishing to repurcahse everything they have on the `newest' medium.
d) you get attached to your music collection - good and bad - so despite pressures, i find it hard to get rid of stuff even if I hardly ever listen to it

I have only ever sold 5 albums in my life (and I can name them ) I had to because I was short of cash and I regret it to this day.

I have about 80-100 vinyls (mostly Prog) and about 80-100 cds (mostly metal). I only collect Prog on vinyl and on their original pressings only. I never get re-issues. I only have like 1 LP I would want to trade in, and that one my friends is 90125 by Yes. What the hell is that crap? WHAT WERE THEY THINKING? Maybe I should ask that about Drama...

I'm with you on that one - far too traumatic an idea. I guess I must have around 100 I could sell but just can't bring myself to do it. I think I have actually sold around the same number od CDs and thery were to a friend.
Of course I have sold and given away a lot of vinyl - but then I have a pathalogical hatred of the stuff. After years of "pop", "crackle", jumps and the like I never want to see it again.

Almost 300 CDs, around 50-75 vinyls, and a lot more downloaded (mostly rare, OoP stuff). I'm only 17 and have been seriously buying music for about 1.5-2 years now, thanks to a job (unfortunately, I had to download before this).

3000+. Mostly CDs. About 100 LPs and 100 cassettes. Mostly prog rock, prog metal, and classic rock, but some pop and jazz/jazz fusion have also made it in to the collection. Unfortunately, 1st CD alphabetically is Abdul, Paula which is about as unprog as it gets but somehow a couple of tunes got into my head and I decided to get it. I've been collecting for a little over 20 years now. I have bought many of them at a local second hand store for $4-$8, but also have bought many new or on EBay. I don't smoke or drink, so buying CDs is my unhealthy addiction.

I only physically own about 111 CDs, but I have 228 Albums on Itunes. (About 10 Gigs). A few are bought from Itunes cuz sometimes I just want a new album and can't wait for stores to open, and sometimes I borrow friends albums. If Ilike them I eventually buy them, but I'm getting way behind lol.
