How many original albums have you got? LP, CD, casettes, whatever.
I only got about 45 CDs and 20 LPs or so. I wish I was richer...

Hard to say really, I have over 83 GB of music on an external harddrive (mostly copied from CDs), and I'd say about 100 LPs.
If you've got a record player, you can expand your collection really easily for very little money if you find a couple good used record stores. Most of my LPs cost between $1-3, with the exception of a few special ones which were more like $8.

Everything I can buy in my country I have. I used to import a lot of cds but the brazilian tax organs are trying very hard to disistimulate me. All in all, I have more than a thousand, almost two counting with the peer to peer friends' contributions (all substituted by the original when I find it).

being poor sucks doesn't it.. we've all been there..
no idea about the size of mine to be honest... never counted.
Come this summer though... when my collection is merged with
Raff's, whose overall collection might even be larger than
mine.. and whose prog collection includes many I don't have (loves her
English prog .. me Italian, Spanish, and French prog ...we mostly only
have duplicates of the Big groups). We will have the collection to die
for hahhahah.

Many hundreds of tapes and CDs. Many of my CDs are classical.
I used to have a large LP collection, but it was at my parents' house which they sold (don't know if they were sold at a garage sale or thrown out). Some were rare and valuable collectors LPs.
My 8-track collection went missing too. My father never did approve of rock music (or anything not classical really), so I suspect they went to the dump.

I've been buying for over 35 years (I don't collect - I just buy) and reached the stage where I am too scared to actually count the exact number, because If I knew that then I'd know their total value and then would never sleep at night. Several people have volunteered to catalogue them for me, but the answer is always no. I know there are over 600 vinyl LP's because the removal men like to count the boxes every time we move house ("Wot you got in here then? Heavy metal?" - was funny the first time, but 20 boxes later I found it difficult to raise a smile). I have three pre-recorded cassettes. Forced to guess the total number of CD's I would say I have lots. My iPlod is sitting at 30G - all tx'd from CD's I own since I don't download.

Allow me to take a guess then. Let's say you ripped them all at 128kb/s. Then you've got around 30,000 minutes of music. For the average record with 45-60 minutes, that amounts to 666-500 CDs. (note the Beast's number :D) Those only count for the CDs you actually ripped, so if you've got another 1000 stashed somewhere else.. that's a different story.

Not really rich here so much as persistent. I'm about to hit 1300 CD titles.
I got started in the age of LP. I have cassettes that I can't even play back anymore. I'm 42 and have been collecting CDs since the mid to early '80's. If you're a music nut like me you can't help but start out gradually. The older prog in my collection still give me pleasure as much as the new stuff.
I an imagine it's hard to be patient as the prog universe has grown so much since I first encountered it (the '70's). I have found adding too much too soon can kind of give you a musical indigestion, or at the very least you tend to not absorb the newcomers enough to properly appreciate.

I agree completely. All these things start slowly, you buy what you can afford when you can afford it (however, when younger sometimes I would buy too many LP's and have to miss a few nights out down the pub because I was broke ). I think by the time I was 18 I owned about 100 albums in total.
Even when you are older, wiser and with a bit more cash in your pocket, there are still times when other priorities mean you cannot buy every CD you see.

You got time. Just know that as your collection grows, you may find yourself listening to each particular album less than you do now. SO where you may have listened to some of your favourites 20- 30 times, when you get a large number of albums, you'll see that even the new favourites get less air time.

I've got about 266 albums or so- I always like to keep close tab on what I've got. I've been seriously collecting/buying music for almost 2 and half years now. My collection is all on compact disc- I've got no cassettes and only a handful of vinyl LPs of albums I already have on CD. My dad has a killer vinyl collection, probably around 200-300 or so. I want it.

every time I trade in original Cd's I can't believe how worthless they are second hand I soon lost respect for them and decided that CDrs are the way to go in my part of the world anyway , I have about 1000 CD`s half are Cd`s, my friends and myself share our music similar to what people did back in the vinyl days with tapes there's no difference don`t get all self righteous on me
most CD`s are only worth a fraction of the price second hand had they held closer to their value I`m sure they would be more popular

Just under 3800 CDs. Of those, around 1800 are prog, 1200 are rock, folk and singer/songwriter and the rest are classical and opera. I still have around 100 vinyl but, as I have no deck, it can hardly be counted. I also have some 50 or so cassettes but would never include them - being such a crappy medium. No 8-tracks or reel-to-reel and no mp3 etc.
Oh, and I have around 150 music DVDs as well.

Haven't done an exact count in a while, but I would say I have about 380-390 CD's (and about 40 DVD's). I bought my first CD 10 years ago when I was 11 (it was Soundgarden's "Down On The Upside") and my last one was "Face The Music" by ELO. I buy about 40 CD's a year (and my "Must Buy" list grows by about that amount every year!)

I might also add that I have all my titles cataloged in an Excel spreadsheet. I've even been tracking the purchase date since '99. I think even more importantly I use a randomizer I've set up in Excel to insure every thing stays in circulation and gets listened to sooner or later. I'd highly recommend getting a log started when you're collection is relatively small, because as you can see from some the posts, when your collection gets large it will become an impossible task. If anyone is interested in getting a copy of my spreadsheet, either the log and/or the randomizer, drop me message with your e-mail and I'll be happy to share. Music file sharing isn't allowed here but I don't think there's any restrictions on sharing a spreadsheet form of my own creation.

I've never counted (too busy listening) but I would estimate my LP collection at 2000+ and my CD collection at 1300 or so. There's not a great deal of duplication between the two. My problem is that I am an out of control consumer rather than a collector. There is way too much good music out there that I haven't heard and I have too broad of tastes in music. There aren't too many genres that I don't like. Not that I like all the artists in any genre. I do have some refinement.

prolly about 150 vinyl records, 100 casettes, 800 CDs, and I have about 250G of music on my hard drive (a mix of stuff downloaded, copied from friends, and ripped from my own collection).
...oh, and 1 8-track tape (no, I'm not kidding. It got stuck in a junk drawer years ago and my perverse sense of humor restrained me from doing the humane thing and chucking it). It's a K-Tel compilation from the late 70's and has stuff like BOC, Robin Trower, and Boston on it...wonder if it still works...

101-150... I'm not sure how many exactly, but I know for sure that I have at least 100 original albums. Mostly studioalbums, some livealbums or dvds, a couple of cassettes and some vinyls. And also "a few" singles. Most of my albums are heavy metal - I'm a new fan of prog so I don't have that many prog albums. I have vinyls of all kinds of music. There are some jazz vinyls, classical music, Jethro Tull, Procol Harum, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden etc.

Several issues arise
a) storage - I now feel i have too many LPs, cassettes and CDs - so it's become a challenge to store and access them.
b) resale value - as mentioned above, since the resale value of all second hand (with a few exceptions) are so low, there's less incentive to clear stuff out hence the storage problem.
c) I prefer vinyl, regardless of quality (warped or cracked - within reason) but appreciate all three media for different reasons. I'm sure others face the same problem of not wishing to repurcahse everything they have on the `newest' medium.
d) you get attached to your music collection - good and bad - so despite pressures, i find it hard to get rid of stuff even if I hardly ever listen to it

I'm with you on that one - far too traumatic an idea. I guess I must have around 100 I could sell but just can't bring myself to do it. I think I have actually sold around the same number od CDs and thery were to a friend.

3000+. Mostly CDs. About 100 LPs and 100 cassettes. Mostly prog rock, prog metal, and classic rock, but some pop and jazz/jazz fusion have also made it in to the collection. Unfortunately, 1st CD alphabetically is Abdul, Paula which is about as unprog as it gets but somehow a couple of tunes got into my head and I decided to get it. I've been collecting for a little over 20 years now. I have bought many of them at a local second hand store for $4-$8, but also have bought many new or on EBay. I don't smoke or drink, so buying CDs is my unhealthy addiction.

I only own about 60 cd's, i am a poor young student, so there isn't much i can do to change it. However i have a good friend with ok music tastes from who i can borrow albums to copy to my computer, mostly non-prog though..But if i were rich, don't get me starting.. my wishlist is huge, but well, I guess i'll just have to wait..

^ depending on whether you live in a country where Napster is available I'd recommend either this to you (Napster.com subscription) or eMusic.com.

But anyways, the local stores are crap. I won't buy mainstream records ( I don't know about you guys). And that's all they got here. |
Than be the first and open your prog CD shop.
By the way I was on Malta (in Sliema) on my wedding trip in 1988. Very nice place to live.
My collection is about 700 Cd's, about 300 originals and around 180 DVD's (just 10 original )

That kind of thing passes through my mind occasionally. But nobody would buy prog records here hah. The market is small you know, we're just 400,000 people here.

Wow, according to this poll, a plurality (and almost half!) of PA users have over 500 albums. That's a lot of music.
I have 67 CDs, including the Zeppelin and others that I never listen to and if double albums count as two. But I have 91 abums on my iPod: I love eMusic and people who put their albums up for free.

I think i've got about 30 or so (estimation) actually bought cd's, whic were all at least 10 bucks, grrrrrrr. I'm poor now! Besides that, I have a host of copies from friends ans such. I've got maybe 60 or more albums total, it's all the greats though...yes, elp, king crimson, genesis, floyd, tull, gentle giant, RETURN TO FOREVER, etc. I'm working my way out from the essentials and my known favourites. Currently getting into vandergraaf gen. My father has a hugely extensive collection though, which i'm free to copy any of (cd's anyway). Most of it is non-prog though on cd's. Much of his prog is vinyl. My collection will be huge once I have money!!!

I do have a complete database of my collection, listing artists, titles, formats, countries (of both artists and pressings), years of release, conditions, values and all musicians. But it would be a little too large to post online.
