Meddle, although Atom Heart Mother runs a close 2nd.
It's the perfection of DSOTM that puts me off a little - I prefer a little roughness at the edges; which obviously discounts WYWH for the same reason. Animals is great, but it simply doesn't have the "draw" that keeps me coming back in the same way that Meddle does - especially "Echoes", and the style is nowhere near as varied. Say what you like about "Seamus", I think it breaks up the texture nicely - who else but Floyd would get a dog howling the blues onto an album? Or Liverpool fans chanting their club's anthem during "Fearless"?
Meddle may not be as daringly experimental as Ummagumma, but it's still pretty "out there" in its own rights - if only left of field. The Wall is too long really, in that it maintains the same mood and style for too long. There is great drama, and some great stylistic changes - but not enough to maintain my interest for 90-odd minutes. I even find the film hard going, despite the intense moments. Obscured by Clouds is a definite contender for 3rd place, IMO.

Definitely "Animals" for me, by a longshot.
If only because it has 'Dogs' on it, quite simply the most complete
song the FLOYD ever wrote. It has everything that could possibly
illustrate what their music is: Waters' most biting and cynical lyrics,
emotion-provoking Gilmourian guitar solos, tone, sound sampling, equal
Gilmour/Waters song structure, atmosphere, plenty of satire, two
different vocalists and yet still more Gilmour guitar all painted on a
wonderful seventeen minute canvass. What Waters creates lyrically,
Gilmour matches musically.
PLUS it also has two more FLOYD classic animals in 'Sheep' and 'Pigs'.

I voted for DSOTM.. though all those albums are great! I could
have also voted for "Meddle", "Wish You Were Here" or "Animals"
without regretting it later on.. What a great band!

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

ANIMALS is the #1 album of all time in my opinion. It's brilliant. The story is amazing, it's thought provoking, the instrumentals, especially from Gilmour are amazing. It's the perfect album. No contest, even though all these Floyd albums are great. |
Well there is quite a contest But I agree, my vote goes to animals
