"Wish you were here".

"DSOTM was a great landmark album, but WYWH is for me pretty much perfect.

The Wall is one of the greatest achievements of the modern musical era.

A true Prog Classic which manages to keep the authors' credibility intact whilst appealing to a broad audience.

Intelligent, dark, honest lyrics and some sublime musicianship from Mr Gilmour et al.

Comfortably Numb greatest song from a concept album anyone?

Approve

They're all so good .... (possible exception of the wall)

I voted for Atom Heart Mother, the AHM suite and Summer' 68 are great songs, this album really deserves a vote!

I voted Animals. I try to be consistant with an answer on this question, and with the likes of Piper, Meddle, Dark Side, WYWH, Animals, the Wall and the Division Bell it is very hard to do so. Animals though combines stellar lyrics with all the members of the band playing in their prime and at their best, all into to five (four?) perfect songs.

Gotta go with Animals... Even tho DSOTM will probably always be my favorite Floyd album...thats because of where I was in my head at the time also.  But musically, Animals is what I prefer to listen to these days.... Its better survived the test of time I think!

ANIMALS is the #1 album of all time in my opinion. It's brilliant. The story is amazing, it's thought provoking, the instrumentals, especially from Gilmour are amazing. It's the perfect album. No contest, even though all these Floyd albums are great.

During my time as a Pink Floyd fan, I've had times in which every one of the albums listed had been a favourite, so it's a very hard question, but if I was to pick a Pink Floyd record from my collection right this moment and listen to it, it would be Atom Heart Mother, maybe it's another 5 minutes from now but.....

Has to be The Wall.

I was lucky enough to see them do it live at Earls Court.

Hey, Sweetnighter, why did you not include "Obscured By Clouds" (1972)? OK, the majority dismiss it, but I actually listen to it more than the others these days. I like the collection of short, melodic tracks, some of which really rock. The tracks 'Mudmen' and 'Stay' are superb in my opinion.

Of those you've listed, my favourites are "Atom Heart Mother" and "Dark Side Of The Moon". Hmmm, I'll vote for the former.

I realized you wrote of those listed below, but you would have made this thread complete by adding one more line and placing Obscured by Clouds on the list.

It probably wouldn't have changed anyones vote but you never know. For me it is my 2nd favorite album of PF's of the 70's.

It was just one more line being added. One line!!........just one line!!!!!

WYWH gets my vote - am I the only person alive who believes that 'The Wall' is one of the most overrated albums ever? 'Comfortably Numb' is a classic, and I have a soft spot for 'One of my Turns', but apart from that I'd rather listen to 'The Final Cut'.

Lets face it, when rock stars start singing about how horrible life is as a rock star, it's time to quit.

Musically I prefer their earlier albums.

I love the early Pink Floyd albums! But, I like many voted for WYWH because it's more perfect than the other perfect albums...Animals and The Wall are fantastic in their own right, but WWYH does it for me. I find The Wall to be an amazing album, but like many double albums there is quite a bit of chaff in between the good moments, but the good moments make it worthwhile!

Meddle, although Atom Heart Mother runs a close 2nd.

It's the perfection of DSOTM that puts me off a little - I prefer a little roughness at the edges; which obviously discounts WYWH for the same reason. Animals is great, but it simply doesn't have the "draw" that keeps me coming back in the same way that Meddle does - especially "Echoes", and the style is nowhere near as varied. Say what you like about "Seamus", I think it breaks up the texture nicely - who else but Floyd would get a dog howling the blues onto an album? Or Liverpool fans chanting their club's anthem during "Fearless"?

Meddle may not be as daringly experimental as Ummagumma, but it's still pretty "out there" in its own rights - if only left of field. The Wall is too long really, in that it maintains the same mood and style for too long. There is great drama, and some great stylistic changes - but not enough to maintain my interest for 90-odd minutes. I even find the film hard going, despite the intense moments. Obscured by Clouds is a definite contender for 3rd place, IMO.

Definitely "Animals" for me, by a longshot.

If only because it has 'Dogs' on it, quite simply the most complete song the FLOYD ever wrote. It has everything that could possibly illustrate what their music is: Waters' most biting and cynical lyrics, emotion-provoking Gilmourian guitar solos, tone, sound sampling, equal Gilmour/Waters song structure, atmosphere, plenty of satire, two different vocalists and yet still more Gilmour guitar all painted on a wonderful seventeen minute canvass. What Waters creates lyrically, Gilmour matches musically.

PLUS it also has two more FLOYD classic animals in 'Sheep' and 'Pigs'.

You have got to be kidding me that Meddle has more votes than The Wall! Animals is a very good album, but not their best in the 70's. DSOTM and WYWH are both overrated and the Wall is just plain one of the greatest concept albums ever. As for the other two, I don't even know what to say.

 Obviously:  Wink

                                    Album cover

"The Dark Side of the Moon (The initial "The" is omitted in most versions of the title) is a 1973 concept album by Pink Floyd, dealing with the pressures of life such as time, money, war, mental illness, and death.

It is considered by many fans to be the band's magnum opus, surpassing even The Wall (1979). Originally composed as "Eclipse: A Piece for Assorted Lunatics", it was played live during Pink Floyd's 1972 tour. The Dark Side of the Moon was the original title of the opus, but the band Medicine Head had already released an album by that name (although without the "The"). However, their album flopped, and the name The Dark Side of the Moon was once again used, along with an end song to the opus called Eclipse, into which Brain Damage now segues. A landmark in rock, it features radio-suited rock songs such as Money, Time, Us and Them, and Brain Damage/Eclipse, with ethereal electronica, and concrete sound effects. It is a bridge between "classic" blues rock and the then-new electronic music genres. However, it is the softer touches on Dark Side, the lyrical and musical nuance, that make this album stand apart.

The Dark Side of the Moon is estimated to be the second-best-selling album of all time, worldwide, and the 18th-best-selling album in the United States. It peaked at #1 on The Billboard 200, spent a record-setting total of 800 weeks (over 15 years) on that list, and also reached #1 on Billboard's Pop Catalog Chart. The 2003 Hybrid SACD issue reached #1 on Billboard's Pop Catalog Chart as well and sold 800,000 SACDs in the U.S. alone. Since it was first released, it has sold over 40 million copies worldwide as of 2004. In 2003, 250,000 copies were bought, and as of 2004 it was selling over 8,000 copies a week. It is estimated that one in every 14 people in the U.S. under the age of 50 owns a copy of this album".Clap

I voted Meddle because Echoes is one of the greatest suites/epics EVER. Fearless and One of these days are also great songs and high points.

Meddle also was the first album in the greatest of all the PF eras. Brilliant

DSOTM is a very close second.

The first 7 songs melt your mind into a dreamy cream utopia and then brain damage/eclipse spontaneously puts it back together again.
