Everything from Rush between 1976 - 1982 was great!
2112, Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures and Signals are f**king classics! I love all of them

A Farewell to Kings is my personal favorite.

Permanent Waves for me, followed by Farewell To Kings. I still can't understand the appeal of Moving Pictures myself.

I still think they suck. I've seen them about six times and they're one of the most unexciting live acts.
Rush is goof-rock and I don't even understand how they can be
classified as a prog-rock band. Here we go again with the what is/what
isn't prog argument. |
I've not seen any band that many times.
|
Me neither - that's a lot of times to go and see a band who you think are unexciting!
There's no doubt that Rush are (overall) a prog band. The evidence is
clear - LoTR songs (Rivendell), concept epics (Hemispheres, 2112),
Xanadu etc etc. Maybe they went "astray" a bit later in their career,
but that applies to a lot of bands here. How can you have a song called
"By-Tor and the Snow Dog" and not be prog?

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

I voted for Vapor Trails because I believe is a great coming back from a great band. If I had 28 chances, I would cast a vote for each material, including their official live albums and compilations.
With this album, Rush are still in good shape, as in every record, and even more given the fact of all the tragedies Neil went through in his personal life after the Test for Echo tour. I cannot imagine it and I am pretty sure that losing a wife or a daughter is more painful than anything else in the world. It is just amazing and wonderful that he made it pretty well and that he is now re-making his life, although it is impossible to keep all the pain away.
The best thing of this album, a part from the whole concept, is that the guitar sound is so powerful, crude and raw (just the way Big Al wanted)... It is all riff oriented with not many solos (I really miss them). Everything is focused on time signatures, melody, textures and rythm.
There are some great tunes in here: One little Victory, Ghost Rider, Peaceble Kingdom, Vapor Trail, Earthshine, Nocturne and Freeze.

Hemispheres is from that time when art rock was by all means the mainline of Rush. I so wish we could have that again... it won't kill you to hear a live version of La Villa Strangiato.
