Vote for your favorite Rush album
I'm voting for Permanent Waves. Spirit of Radio is one of my favorite short Rush pieces of all time, and there isn't a weak spot on the album. Natural Science is my favorite Rush epic as well other than Cygnus Book II and maybe Xanadu. Freewill, Jacob's Ladder, Entre Nous and Different Strings are all Rush classics in my mind's eye.

I voted for Hemispheres only because of La Villa. This band should have disbanded long ago. The only thing tat they did after that album which merits mention is Signals. I 've seen them live many times and I've always walked away disappointed. Geddy can't plal bas or keybords even if he had a gun held to his head.

Now you're just trying to get a reaction.

My favourite album changes about every three days, so I can't exactly pick a favourite.
However, By-Tor is the song currently stuck in my head, so my vote goes for Fly by Night.

Hemispheres is nice, by Cygnus X-1 Book 2 doesn't do it for me.

I voted for 'Hemispheres'. As a way to illustrate my point, here comes my review for this album in the Archives:
In my humble opinion (which is coincident with that of many Rush loyal followers), “Hemispheres” establishes the finest hour of Lee, Lifeson and Peart as both performers and portrayers. Keeping their strong step on the road of hard rock driven symphonic prog that had been started in “A Farewell to Kings”, “Hemispheres” finds this power trio exhibiting an air of finesse fluidly combined with their habitual metallic rock conviction. The namesake suite, which occupied the whole A-side in the vinyl format, is a perfect example of the maturity that by now Rush has achieved: it is more cohesive and its successive sections are more cleverly arranged in an integral way than the ‘2112’ or ‘Fountain of Lamneth’ suites. The link between the ‘Prelude’ and the main motifs of ‘Apollo’ and ‘Dionysus’ arrives to an awesome climax in the martial-like tout-de- force of ‘Armageddon’; the inscrutable spatial ambience in the first part of ‘Cygnus’ creates a dramatic ethereal intermission between the epic fire of the previous sections and the one that burns even more intensely in the climax that signals the last part of ‘Cygnus’. A bang on the gong announces the closure of ‘Cygnus’ with powerful majesty, but there’s still something left: a beautiful 1-minute acoustic ballad in which Lee gently proclaims the dream of a unity of both sides of the human soul (the rational and the emotional). Hard as it seems to be, the remaining repertoire is not to be overshadowed by this explosive epic. Well, ‘Circumstances’ actually is just a moderately complex rocky number, whose melodic lines are based on catchy guitar riffs: but what a good rock song it is, indeed. ‘The Trees’ is an attractive fable that still nowadays is part of the band’s usual tracklist on stage. Its storyline, centered on the subject of unfair inequity being eventually replaced by forced equity, is conveniently reflected by the varied instrumentation, handled with a sense of fine musical vision: a classical guitar intro, the rockier sequences switching from 4/4 to 6/4 with total fluidity, a brief introspective interlude in which the Moog solo and the cowbells portray a forest in a state of “calm before the storm”… each and every element in this song shouts out the greatness conveyed in it as a whole. And the same happens in the case of ‘La Villa Strangiato’, a powerful instrumental “exercise in self-indulgence” that is among the most emblematic pieces in Rush’s entire career. All along its 12 sections displayed in a time span of 9 and a half minutes, the threesome expose their technical abilities and their combined versatility in order to create a multi-faceted journey through the realms of symph prog, hard rock, jazz rock, Arabic-like eerie ambiences (even a memorable although brief Flamenco intro!!). The guys seem to be at ease fulfilling such a demanding task, having fun while challenging the listener with all the overwhelming complexity that is contained in ‘La Villa’. What a way to close down an album! In fact, what an album! Just like its predecessor, “Hemispheres” is a 5-star masterpiece.

This poll is decieving.
Usually wouldn't say that one album is categorically better than another because taste comes in to play. But in this case Farewell to kings is definitly the best Rush album. I'm not sure why more people don't get this?
Lets break down the two albums in question Hemispheres and FWTK rating each song.
Hemispheres
1. Cygnus X-1 Book II (18:04) Rating 7 (not nearly as good as book 1) still strong though. 2. Circumstances (3:40) 8 3. The trees (4:42) 7 slightly corny song about trees. But still really good. 4. La Villa Strangiato: (10:34) great instrumental. 9
total 31- Average of 7.75
1. A farewell to kings (5:49) Totally classic. 10 2. Xanadu (11:04) Totally classic and then some. Best song Rush ever did. 10 Side 2 3. Closer to the heart (2:51) maybe the best commercial song they did. 9 4. Cinderella man (4:19) total medieval vibe great track. 8 5. Madrigal (2:33) more atmosphere. the calm befor the stoarm 9 6. Cygnus X-1 (10:21) 10 most underrated rush song ever.
Average- 9.33333
Why am I the only one to see this?

Implying that one has to be infantile or immature to appreciate their music. Oh dear, what does that say about everyone here?
Still, we cant all be as mature and sophisticated in our tastes as you, I guess.

I still think they suck. I've seen them about six times and they're one of the most unexciting live acts. Rush is goof-rock and I don't even understand how they can be classified as a prog-rock band. Here we go again with the what is/what isn't prog argument.

Signals is actually a good album. But Moving Pictures is by far the best ever. Followed closely by 2112, Hemispheres, Grace Under Pressure and A Farewell To Kings.
Vapor Trails is not a bad album, got some exciting songs like Ghost Rider, One Little Victory, Earthshine, How It Is and Peaceable Kingdom.

Moving Pictures. it's the only flawless album of their career.
Permanent Waves is a close second but Entre-nous lets it down slighly.
I reiterate once again(to the fury of the many)... Hemispheres (at least side one) sucks.

There was me thinking he was a seasoned mature progger
He told me he was at the Montreal spectrum the night Marillion recorded 'Real to Reel' Ha! Nevermind I wont let on.
Anyway, I mean no disrespect to VB. He's entitled to his opinions as we all are. I just get stroppy when people sl*g Rush off. I'm immature like that myself.
For the record I fully endorse all infantile behaviour. Its keeps us young!!

I think Moving Pictures, so many good songs in it, Limelight, Tom
Sawyer etc etc.. not much of a variety since it was a rather small
album but quality definitely beats quantity..
So aye, Moving Pictures.

"Moving Pictures" is without doubt their peak and best album, but my favourite Rush album is "Grace Under Pressure", it got a special atmosphere (very key-dominated) and my favourite Rush song: "Afterimage" (often overlooked classic).

Me neither - that's a lot of times to go and see a band who you think are unexciting!
There's no doubt that Rush are (overall) a prog band. The evidence is
clear - LoTR songs (Rivendell), concept epics (Hemispheres, 2112),
Xanadu etc etc. Maybe they went "astray" a bit later in their career,
but that applies to a lot of bands here. How can you have a song called
"By-Tor and the Snow Dog" and not be prog?

I voted for Vapor Trails because I believe is a great coming back from a great band. If I had 28 chances, I would cast a vote for each material, including their official live albums and compilations.
With this album, Rush are still in good shape, as in every record, and even more given the fact of all the tragedies Neil went through in his personal life after the Test for Echo tour. I cannot imagine it and I am pretty sure that losing a wife or a daughter is more painful than anything else in the world. It is just amazing and wonderful that he made it pretty well and that he is now re-making his life, although it is impossible to keep all the pain away.
The best thing of this album, a part from the whole concept, is that the guitar sound is so powerful, crude and raw (just the way Big Al wanted)... It is all riff oriented with not many solos (I really miss them). Everything is focused on time signatures, melody, textures and rythm.
There are some great tunes in here: One little Victory, Ghost Rider, Peaceble Kingdom, Vapor Trail, Earthshine, Nocturne and Freeze.
