^ (See much of the above.)
Just a trifle over the top, wouldn't you say, boys?
Is the objective here to hurt each other, spoil this Forum, destroy it altogether, or all three?

just busting your balls a little, greg...no big deal. I only wrote that first thing to prove that you weren't totally "outa here"...and it worked, you responded. Then I thought you and I were having a joke about the ball-licking thing...I was hoping you'd come back the way you did so I could throw out that old punchline (I was torn between "quiet" and "not moving"...which do you think would works better?). You don't really think I'm actually talking about your mother, do you? I didn't think you were being serious about the dogs...were you? Do you actually picture me having dogs lick my testicles?
Go on, admit that this has been the most interesting thread on this forum for you these last few days. Admit that my post made a bigger impression on you than all the "we'll miss you, we love you" crap. After the discussions we've had, I would have been a hypocrite to join in with that kind of farewell...and I also hoped you'd be able to join in on the fun. Our brief private correspondence should have convinced you that I don't have any bad feelings towards you...I guess maybe I overestimated you, and for that I am sorry.

The more you're here..you'll get to know that person and become more comfortable in your communications with him/her and realize that sometimes a mean seeming post may be made but you'll just know better. It is typical roughhousing banter you would do with your mates( oh...great...I'm starting to talk like ya Brits now-see...kind of like that..but anyone who knows me knows I am just farting around and no mean intention was meant) |
My real farewell for you (and anyone else who cares), worth thinking about the deeper meanings:
"...suddenly, I viddied that thinking was for the gloopy ones, and that the oomny ones used like inspiration and what Bog sends." - Anthony Burgess, A Clockwork Orange
See ya around greg...I'll be one of the gloopy ones.
Peter: I can't believe you called this discussion "over the top"...I've read some of those exchanges between you and Danbo, for example. Do you honestly think this thread endangers the forum?
VC: I was hoping you, at least, could see through all this BS and get a laugh out of it. I know for sure more people were chuckling from this than anyone is going to come out and admit...and the ones who were actually shocked and/ or morally outraged can, well, lick my balls

Well, sorry for being concerned for the Forums -- it's sometimes unclear why I should be. I tried to be restrained in my response to the discussion between yourself and gdub, not naming names, or insulting anyone. Call me (and others -- see above) a poor reader/judge of tone, but I was upset by an exchange that certainly appeared acrimonious (no winking emoticons to soften the "blow," etc.)
I had thought, for example, that Gdub's calling you "the intellectual bully of the Forums," going back to edit many of his old posts with "," and your references to licking genitalia, and his mother, were not indicative of good will. Sorry if you're really pals, after all.
BTW: Danbo, Dude, Jim and I are friends. We exchange Private Messages, emails, etc. Our teasing exchanges are done with real affection, and liberally sprinkled with emoticons that show each other (and observers) that we are joking. When one or the other occasionally feels that the other has "gone beyond the bounds," a Private Message soon clears up any misunderstanding or potentially hurt feelings.
I'm still pretty new to this internet mode of discourse -- I guess I have a lot to learn about the nature and signs of friendship on this new medium.

^ I just investigated the some of the comments you referenced from gdub...I guess he has been slamming me a bit here and there, eh? Looks like the two of us aren't quite up to the level of relationship you and your friends share.
But really, I wasn't being rhetorical. Do you think this thread poses any threat to the forum?
I'll submit it for review. If I was really out of line, I deserve what's coming to me.

I guess that the threat to the survival of the Forums was overstated, but really, this dispute/spat (and it was that) made the Forum a less fun place to visit.
These things happen among humans, I know....
Maybe (and I'm not being petulant) I should just butt out -- as I initially tried to do.

Yep, I don't bother with covering anything up either with emoticons... they don't even cover my nipples anyway...
Oh and I see James is quoting me in his signature now... I guess this means I can call my agent and tell him I've finally been published...

My insults are 99% smiley-free...only the purest Yankee snide, no additives or preservatives of any kind. What kind of elitist would I be if I stooped to the level of the common internet schweinerei...
Here's an example of the damaging effect of emoticons on a perfectly good ball-busting:
Funny how...I mean, what's funny about it? ..he's a big boy he knows what he said - what'd you say, funny how? What...'cause I don't know...let me understand this, maybe it's me, I'm a little fed up maybe, but I'm funny how, I mean funny like I'm a clown , I amuse you, I make you laugh, I'm here to fin' amuse you?
- Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci), Goodfellas...anyone not know that?
oh, almost forgot about the #1 forum-posting trick...INVISIBLE INK lol...now I can go on a flame rampage with 99% stealth capability ...when I'm in the white portion of the replies, anyway

James:
Actually...while I respect your right not to use emoticons (I certainly won't twist your arm; can't anyway in cyberspace), I ust admit that in reading through this thread, your first lengthy post stopped me in my tracks because it was unclear whether or not you were joking. I had to read through until your explanatory post to find out that you were.
There is a great deal of gray area between not using emoticons and overusing them. At the very least, a single smiley face or wink at the end of a seemingly insulting diatribe might be appropriate.
What think ye?

^ I understand completely- I was just overstating my opposition to emoticons for effect. My thought was that a post that sounded serious would have a bigger effect than one that was obviously a joke...I tried to get as close as possible to the line, so to speak. Creating a little drama, getting the adrenaline working, etc...I took the risk that it would blow up in my face.
Seems to have settled back down, but there's still time for aftershocks
