Although i've only been here a few weeks at most, i've found you an amusing and charming character, and i will miss your posts. Goodbye!
I still find the forums a great place to learn about new music (have a huge list of bands that i want to hear from these forums), and i think newcomers will miss out on a good source
Take care and good luck with everything

"2 to say they don’t like the way the forum is going, and that they are leaving the forum forever
the same 2 people to post again 5 days later apparently not having left after all"
2 people: gdub411 and Reed Lover

Why are all the guys so overly dramatic here....
Greg, you are the instigator of much of the silliness... and you seemed perfectly happy doing so... Now you're leaving cause...???
If you are truly going, then I will miss you... you are my buddy, take care... and email when you get a chance...
I have to say tho, that I've learned a lot about music and prog from the short time I've been here.. and thanks to Cesar.. I also know what all the obscure prog bands look like too...and I've been inspired to listen to a lot of bands that I'd never heard of before.. .and a re-try of some I had and just didn't like (most I still don't like).. .but you know...

I actually agree with you,Greg. I also withdrew from this forum and stayed away for a while. I debated whether to post a goodbye note or not,but I decided not to. And just like you I also felt/feel that posting here and just "hanging" around takes up far too much of my time and I get bogged down in a lot of silliness. I like the silliness (Hi Velvet!) but nevertheless,I found I started to pay far too much attention to what was going on here and other people's judgements of me and found that my thoughts were revolving around this site to such a degree that I found it difficult to concentrate on anything else. It was almost spooky( Cue the Twilight Zone theme) and that this site had become a monster that was consuming my life,so I felt I had no choice but to leave.
However,it's turning out to be more of a tricky withdrawal process than I had imagined,so I guess either I go cold turkey or I'm "doomed" to stay around here forever!
And don't misunderstand: This is not directed against anyone here, you're a great bunch of people.

Hey Carl, chill man.
I for one am glad of the opportunity to say goodbye to someone who has been giving this site a lot of wisdom and laughs over the months.
In addition gdub has been posting a LOT more than you and I believe, has earned the right to say goodbye to some friends. If you don't like it, you don't have to read the post.
I say this with all due respect to you and indeed gdub.

I probably won't ever say "HEY I'M LEAVING!!! NEVER COMING BACK!!!" because there's ALWAYS a chance I'll return. I may not have access to a computer, or I may not care for a while, or something. But yes, this is time-consuming. But that's the best part of being a 15-year-old with virtually no after-school activities who can't drive.
You'll probably see less of me later... maybe...

Please don't go, we love you. It's not you needing us, it's me needing you.
I like your point of view, silly or serious (as goes for all points of views of members).
I understand it can consume more time then you axtualy mean to, so use it like all of us, to your advantage, and not to humour us, or at your own expence.
I can only speak for myself, but I Love You, and will miss you. Best of luck, fun, sillyness, and don't forget to forget the things you're ment to forget.

This is the Solicitor for Mr R Lover:
The aformentioned Mr Lover and Mr G Dub may have been seen at various swish restaurants and posh clubs around Manhatten. Mr Lover would like to state that he and Mr Dub are just good friends. Rumours of a crappy wedding in Reno are just that.Further rumours that Mr Dub's Grandma,Ms Fates will be the bridesmaid are also unfounded.
Any more of this unfounded rumour-mongering will result in the severest penalty. This penalty will involve spending a month on Rancho Danbo listening to Echolyn's latest cat-scratchings, whilst being beaten with a sh*tty stick.
So there!

It's a pretty fitting conclusion, though, don't you think? By his own words, he admitted coming here out of boredom because the site he really wanted to be on was down. In the short time he was here, he shamelessly ingratiated himself to a few emotionally needy folks and incited and annoyed many others. When there was nothing but silliness left for him here (and his own part in bringing about that situation he vaguely admits, although stops short of taking any specific responsibility), he simply leaves, instead of making any sort of commitment to improving the state of the forum. And people still crept out of the woodwork to lick his balls on his way out...it is too bad he's gone, because some of you really do deserve each other.

Why can't we all shake hands, make up for and admitt to our mistakes, a group hug would be in place. Let's proof to the world and ourselves, that we proggers are civilised, intelligent (somewhat) and capable of forgiving and forgetting all the bad things we said and thought of each other, after all it's supposed to be a happy occasion.
Let us all rejoice, and dance, and drink and rejoice some more in celebration of the second coming.

just busting your balls a little, greg...no big deal. I only wrote that first thing to prove that you weren't totally "outa here"...and it worked, you responded. Then I thought you and I were having a joke about the ball-licking thing...I was hoping you'd come back the way you did so I could throw out that old punchline (I was torn between "quiet" and "not moving"...which do you think would works better?). You don't really think I'm actually talking about your mother, do you? I didn't think you were being serious about the dogs...were you? Do you actually picture me having dogs lick my testicles?
Go on, admit that this has been the most interesting thread on this forum for you these last few days. Admit that my post made a bigger impression on you than all the "we'll miss you, we love you" crap. After the discussions we've had, I would have been a hypocrite to join in with that kind of farewell...and I also hoped you'd be able to join in on the fun. Our brief private correspondence should have convinced you that I don't have any bad feelings towards you...I guess maybe I overestimated you, and for that I am sorry.

My real farewell for you (and anyone else who cares), worth thinking about the deeper meanings:
"...suddenly, I viddied that thinking was for the gloopy ones, and that the oomny ones used like inspiration and what Bog sends." - Anthony Burgess, A Clockwork Orange
See ya around greg...I'll be one of the gloopy ones.
Peter: I can't believe you called this discussion "over the top"...I've read some of those exchanges between you and Danbo, for example. Do you honestly think this thread endangers the forum?
VC: I was hoping you, at least, could see through all this BS and get a laugh out of it. I know for sure more people were chuckling from this than anyone is going to come out and admit...and the ones who were actually shocked and/ or morally outraged can, well, lick my balls

Well, sorry for being concerned for the Forums -- it's sometimes unclear why I should be. I tried to be restrained in my response to the discussion between yourself and gdub, not naming names, or insulting anyone. Call me (and others -- see above) a poor reader/judge of tone, but I was upset by an exchange that certainly appeared acrimonious (no winking emoticons to soften the "blow," etc.)
I had thought, for example, that Gdub's calling you "the intellectual bully of the Forums," going back to edit many of his old posts with "," and your references to licking genitalia, and his mother, were not indicative of good will. Sorry if you're really pals, after all.
BTW: Danbo, Dude, Jim and I are friends. We exchange Private Messages, emails, etc. Our teasing exchanges are done with real affection, and liberally sprinkled with emoticons that show each other (and observers) that we are joking. When one or the other occasionally feels that the other has "gone beyond the bounds," a Private Message soon clears up any misunderstanding or potentially hurt feelings.
I'm still pretty new to this internet mode of discourse -- I guess I have a lot to learn about the nature and signs of friendship on this new medium.

I guess that the threat to the survival of the Forums was overstated, but really, this dispute/spat (and it was that) made the Forum a less fun place to visit.
These things happen among humans, I know....
Maybe (and I'm not being petulant) I should just butt out -- as I initially tried to do.

My insults are 99% smiley-free...only the purest Yankee snide, no additives or preservatives of any kind. What kind of elitist would I be if I stooped to the level of the common internet schweinerei...
Here's an example of the damaging effect of emoticons on a perfectly good ball-busting:
Funny how...I mean, what's funny about it? ..he's a big boy he knows what he said - what'd you say, funny how? What...'cause I don't know...let me understand this, maybe it's me, I'm a little fed up maybe, but I'm funny how, I mean funny like I'm a clown , I amuse you, I make you laugh, I'm here to fin' amuse you?
- Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci), Goodfellas...anyone not know that?
oh, almost forgot about the #1 forum-posting trick...INVISIBLE INK lol...now I can go on a flame rampage with 99% stealth capability ...when I'm in the white portion of the replies, anyway

James:
Actually...while I respect your right not to use emoticons (I certainly won't twist your arm; can't anyway in cyberspace), I ust admit that in reading through this thread, your first lengthy post stopped me in my tracks because it was unclear whether or not you were joking. I had to read through until your explanatory post to find out that you were.
There is a great deal of gray area between not using emoticons and overusing them. At the very least, a single smiley face or wink at the end of a seemingly insulting diatribe might be appropriate.
What think ye?

^ I understand completely- I was just overstating my opposition to emoticons for effect. My thought was that a post that sounded serious would have a bigger effect than one that was obviously a joke...I tried to get as close as possible to the line, so to speak. Creating a little drama, getting the adrenaline working, etc...I took the risk that it would blow up in my face.
Seems to have settled back down, but there's still time for aftershocks

why do lambchops usually get served with mint jelly?
I've never eaten either one. Do they really compliment each other, or is it just a matter of getting rid of two horrible foods in one go?

When there was nothing but silliness left for him here (and his own part in bringing about that situation he vaguely admits, although stops short of taking any specific responsibility), he simply leaves, instead of making any sort of commitment to improving the state of the forum. A Modest Proposal
For preventing the children of poor people in Ireland from being a burden to their parents or country, and for making them beneficial to the public
It is a melancholy object to those who walk through this great town or travel in the country, when they see the streets, the roads, and cabin doors, crowded with beggars of the female sex, followed by three, four, or six children, all in rags and importuning every passenger for an alms. These mothers, instead of being able to work for their honest livelihood, are forced to employ all their time in strolling to beg sustenance for their helpless infants: who as they grow up either turn thieves for want of work, or leave their dear native country to fight for the Pretender in Spain, or sell themselves to the Barbadoes.
I think it is agreed by all parties that this prodigious number of children in the arms, or on the backs, or at the heels of their mothers, and frequently of their fathers, is in the present deplorable state of the kingdom a very great additional grievance; and, therefore, whoever could find out a fair, cheap, and easy method of making these children sound, useful members of the commonwealth, would deserve so well of the public as to have his statue set up for a preserver of the nation.
But my intention is very far from being confined to provide only for the children of professed beggars; it is of a much greater extent, and shall take in the whole number of infants at a certain age who are born of parents in effect as little able to support them as those who demand our charity in the streets.
As to my own part, having turned my thoughts for many years upon this important subject, and maturely weighed the several schemes of other projectors, I have always found them grossly mistaken in the computation. It is true, a child just dropped from its dam may be supported by her milk for a solar year, with little other nourishment; at most not above the value of two shillings, which the mother may certainly get, or the value in scraps, by her lawful occupation of begging; and it is exactly at one year old that I propose to provide for them in such a manner as instead of being a charge upon their parents or the parish, or wanting food and raiment for the rest of their lives, they shall on the contrary contribute to the feeding, and partly to the clothing, of many thousands.
There is likewise another great advantage in my scheme, that it will prevent those voluntary abortions, and that horrid practice of women murdering their bastard children, alas, too frequent among us, sacrificing the poor innocent babes I doubt more to avoid the expense than the shame, which would move tears and pity in the most savage and inhuman breast.
The number of souls in this kingdom being usually reckoned one million and a half, of these I calculate there may be about two hundred thousand couple whose wives are breeders; from which number I subtract thirty thousand couples who are able to maintain their own children, although I apprehend there cannot be so many, under the present distresses of the kingdom; but this being granted, there will remain an hundred and seventy thousand breeders. I again subtract fifty thousand for those women who miscarry, or whose children die by accident or disease within the year. There only remains one hundred and twenty thousand children of poor parents annually born. The question therefore is, how this number shall be reared and provided for, which, as I have already said, under the present situation of affairs, is utterly impossible by all the methods hitherto proposed. For we can neither employ them in handicraft or agriculture; we neither build houses (I mean in the country) nor cultivate land. They can very seldom pick up a livelihood by stealing, till they arrive at six years old, except where they are of towardly parts, although I confess they learn the rudiments much earlier, during which time, they can however be properly looked upon only as probationers, as I have been informed by a principal gentleman in the county of Cavan, who protested to me that he never knew above one or two instances under the age of six, even in a part of the kingdom so renowned for the quickest proficiency in that art.
I am assured by our merchants, that a boy or a girl before twelve years old is no salable commodity; and even when they come to this age they will not yield above three pounds, or three pounds and half-a-crown at most on the exchange; which cannot turn to account either to the parents or kingdom, the charge of nutriment and rags having been at least four times that value.
I shall now therefore humbly propose my own thoughts, which I hope will not be liable to the least objection.
I have been assured by a very knowing American of my acquaintance in London, that a young healthy child well nursed is at a year old a most delicious, nourishing, and wholesome food, whether stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled; and I make no doubt that it will equally serve in a fricassee or a ragout

... they will never allow, that a Child is under any Obligation to his Father for begetting him, or his Mother for bringing him into the World; which, considering the Miseries of human Life, was neither a Benefit in it self, or intended so by his Parents, whose Thoughts in their Love-Encounters were otherwise employ'd.

What's really great about children is that they are much like pork; almost any wine will compliment the dish, provided one does not overpower the other. Trichinosis is also rarely a concern. I recommend keeping them in as small a space as possible, so they do not toughen due to activity.
