From Al-Jazeera
Vangelis, the Oscar-winning composer of the music for Chariots of Fire and Blade Runner, and a pioneer of electronic music, has died. He was 79. According to several media outlets in the musician's native Greece, Vangelis died of coronavirus in France, where he lived part-time. He also had homes in London and Athens. |

I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution

One thing that I find sad, is that the media only mention his two most famous soundtracks. He has done much more than Chariots Of Fire, that's not even close to be his best.

Every article I see about his death starts with "Chariots of Fire and Blade Runner composer...". He had done so much more, regardless to his soundtracks works. I'm sure Vangelis didn't like being automatically attached to his most famous works, or any other artist.

I think in the mainstream, he's only known for his famous movie soundtracks. I'm not surprised about the sentence above (" "Chariots of Fire and Blade Runner composer...").

Hi, I imagine that he will be remembered far more and longer for his soundtracks than he will for the rest of it all, although I still think that he will be thought of as a major musician/composer of our time. In the films, he is much better known and represented ... and his fame stretched a lot more, due to the imagery in the films. The music itself, while very cinematic in its own way, is more difficult for a lot of rock minded folks that wanted a more mechanical and commercial sound, than what Vangelis had to offer. In the H&H promo for the many FM stations that got it, he was not happy with commercial music and he made it very clear ... he did not do commercial music, which may account for his taking such a long time between pieces, although I can not imagine a record company saying no to something he did, which is possible and we will hear it now, I think. What we don't know, is who is in charge of things now ... for example, we know that Bianca was in charge of Egdar's/TD's, to the chagrin of Jerome who left the family! Likewise, what will happen to Klaus Schulze, although I think that more of his material has been released than almost anyone out there possible. But it is a really tough loss ... he was very special as a person, and I wish that documentary about him had been finished and released, though it will likely show up now to get more money off it, and grab the headlines off the events. Reminds me of a story about Salvador Dali ... a guy in LA had several signed originals and copies (all registered!) ... and he was asked why they were not on display to be sold? "I'm waiting for him to die. The value of all these pieces will double and triple then!" RIP Vangelis ... and don't forget those t-spoons ... I got mine right here!

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!
