Another musical legend left us Cry

Oscar-winning composer Vangelis Papathanassiou has passed away, according to an announcement by law office that represented him. The announcement said Papathanassiou, better known simply by his first name, Vangelis, died at hospital in France on Tuesday, where he was being treated for Covid-19.

Papathanassiou was 79.

His musical career spanned six decades, as a performer, producer and composer, with his most distinguished work being the soundtrack for the 1982 film “Chariots of Fire”. Other Hollywood projects included the iconic Blade Runner and 1492.

Leaving Greece in the late 1960s for Paris he joined and performed with the progressive rock band Aphrodite’s Child, where he teamed up with another notable Greek artist, Demis Roussos.

Meaning that a rumour spread by some radios and internet media has been denied by a spokesperson for the musician...

Vangelis has long been my favorite composer and recording artist. Even though my collection of his albums is vast, I still do not have everything he released since many are difficult to find in the U.S. His music has moved in ways no other composer or artist has done. Very saddened at this. Cry My listening tribute begins tonight with Nocturne: The Piano Album. Although with only an average rating on this site, I find the music full of depth and emotion. Beautifully played, with lots of subtlety and feeling. Piano is enhanced by the kind of lush backgrounds we expect from this great musician. My tribute will not last a single night.

Like many, I first heard his music on Carl Sagan's Cosmos. Interestingly, I was at a Kansas concert 1979 or '80, and they played this really weird music between bands, music I found more memorable than that performed that night (I love Kansas but not the album they were touring for). Shortly, I found out the music was from Heaven and Hell, one of my very favorites. I would like Pinta, Niña, Santa María (Into Eternity) from 1492: Conquest of Paradise played at my funeral, before the wake, of course. All 13 + minutes of it. Maybe with a slide show. That album is also one of my very favorites.

Hi,

I'm not sad. I know that we all have to go sooner or later, but there are times when one person has left more memories in your heart than you can even count, or imagine.

And Vangelis, left many of these for me to remember until the day it doesn't matter anymore.

But worst of all ... we don't get to hear where the teaspoons are anymore ... we're relegated to having to find them on our own, as before. (True story ... it was in a promo of for H&H given to FM stations).

His talks about his music, and how he refused to do "commercial music" (I'm not the only one that ever has said it!!! My words came from Vangelis, Schulze and Froese), are very inspiring, but something that most DAW "composers" will never understand, or appreciate.

RIP ... and I know that I will miss a lot of your music, that has not been heard yet, but at least, you left us with some far out memories!

Sad news. Reading that Vangelis died from covid makes me even sadder. I have a lot to thank him for.

I had always heard about Vangelis but the first album I bought by him was L'Apocalypse Des Animaux at random. I was poor, it was cheap and there was just something about the cover art that I found attractive. It was really the first album of the sort that I can remember owning. Gentle, strangely moving and very soothing. He helped open my ears to music that wasn't some kind of rock.

One of the greatest pioneer of electronic music!
666 is one of my beloved albums!
Also Socrates' album "Phos" (Aphrodite's Child and Socrates are the best Greek rock bands of all time) was produced by Vangelis (he was played keyboards and percussion on the album).

Check the song "Starvation", it has one of the finest keyboard riffs of all time!

From Al-Jazeera

Vangelis, the Oscar-winning composer of the music for Chariots of Fire and Blade Runner, and a pioneer of electronic music, has died. He was 79. According to several media outlets in the musician's native Greece, Vangelis died of coronavirus in France, where he lived part-time. He also had homes in London and Athens.

One thing that I find sad, is that the media only mention his two most famous soundtracks. He has done much more than Chariots Of Fire, that's not even close to be his best.

Every article I see about his death starts with "Chariots of Fire and Blade Runner composer...". He had done so much more, regardless to his soundtracks works. I'm sure Vangelis didn't like being automatically attached to his most famous works, or any other artist.

I think in the mainstream, he's only known for his famous movie soundtracks. I'm not surprised about the sentence above (" "Chariots of Fire and Blade Runner composer...").

Hi,

I imagine that he will be remembered far more and longer for his soundtracks than he will for the rest of it all, although I still think that he will be thought of as a major musician/composer of our time. In the films, he is much better known and represented ... and his fame stretched a lot more, due to the imagery in the films.

The music itself, while very cinematic in its own way, is more difficult for a lot of rock minded folks that wanted a more mechanical and commercial sound, than what Vangelis had to offer. In the H&H promo for the many FM stations that got it, he was not happy with commercial music and he made it very clear ... he did not do commercial music, which may account for his taking such a long time between pieces, although I can not imagine a record company saying no to something he did, which is possible and we will hear it now, I think.

What we don't know, is who is in charge of things now ... for example, we know that Bianca was in charge of Egdar's/TD's, to the chagrin of Jerome who left the family! Likewise, what will happen to Klaus Schulze, although I think that more of his material has been released than almost anyone out there possible.

But it is a really tough loss ... he was very special as a person, and I wish that documentary about him had been finished and released, though it will likely show up now to get more money off it, and grab the headlines off the events. Reminds me of a story about Salvador Dali ... a guy in LA had several signed originals and copies (all registered!) ... and he was asked why they were not on display to be sold? "I'm waiting for him to die. The value of all these pieces will double and triple then!"

RIP Vangelis ... and don't forget those t-spoons ... I got mine right here!
