Evan Parker's House Full of Floors makes me question whether or not I like avant-garde music. And the IHM people say it's not even innovative!

Good idea. But if you've ever been on a film set you'd know that it's a little tough to get at the director without 10 or 15 people around them at all times. Producers, actors, technicians, ect, ect.

I'd like to see someone successfully kidnap a director LOL

Although their driver could easily just not arrive on set ShockedWink

He has to sleep sometime. That or some clever use of things like smoke bombs or tear gas.

The lyrics thread annoys me because I could write a post that explains everything and is utterly right and has intelligent insights and excellent examples and it would be an absolute waste of time and noone would read it and people will still think Dream Theater are great lyricists.

More importantly, I'm listening to Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music. It is cathartic. Also noise.

Behold. I am talking about Diablo Swing Orchestra, and avalanchemaster is talking about Deathspell Omega. We managed to get a full half page in before anybody figured it out.

The thing is, nobody ever mentions why prog lyrics are bad, they just say they are bad and offer no comparison, other than Dylan. I chose to not respond to that thread for a reason.

I read this post in Teal'c's voice. Also, I have no idea what those bands are. It's funny though, having two DSO's and two Shub Nigguraths on one page. I know they are spelled differently but still.

If you actually like that, you are much more avant-garde than I thought. You need to start hanging out with the free improvisation guys with me and listen to Keith Rowe. I'm not sure if I believe in totally free improvisation yet, which is much more difficult to like than free jazz, but I'm getting there.

Metal Machine Music is BS and anyone who likes it is lying to themselves.  Lou Reed even said it was a joke.  Unfortunately, some bands never got the joke.

You don't need to hear it.  An hour of guitar feedback.  No redeeming values whatsoever.

How is such a thing possible?
While the sound quality is poor, and you will have to ignore Mike Patton, I think it's pretty clear Lou hasn't given up on that type of music and maybe wasn't entirely serious when he said it was a joke. He also recently recorded an album John Zorn and Laurie Anderson to benefit Zorn's club, The Stone. I would have gotten it but I don't really like him and so didn't see the point.

Well, at least that was somewhat melodic.  But MMM will always be awful in my mind.  The fact that noise exists (and some people claim to appreciate it) really disturbs me sometimes.

You don't have to like Metal Machine Music. I am not a person who has heard it. I am just questioning your value judgements and assumptions. :P

Some noise annoys me, some I like. I have to be in the mood to hear it though.

As for me, I will be listening to Les Morts Vont Vite. Evil Smile

Thank you Brian Eno for reminding me that while avant-garde can be a force of evil, it can also be a force of good.
