Nothings wrong with shoegaze, just not my type of music... kind of like most everything that has a "core" in it
I said that in order to keep it from happening, now it will stop.
Stange after all these months I'm confident in saying that Part the second is not in my top five, I'm enjoying Baroness, WitTR, Isis, Rome, Mastodon and probably Pelicans more than it. That being said, I really do enjoy the album, and really like how far it has come on this site.
I got some Piglet, I'll tell you my thoughts when I listen to it tommorow.

These dudes are cool, however cliche they might be. Super super nice guys, and they sound incredible live, I actually saw them last wednesday, and played with them back in january. I've never seen a post-rock band that really sounded that tight live.
They do this thing where they go *twinkly twinkly twinkly* [Drum Fill] CRUSH!!
and they do it over and over and it's awesome every time.

What is this and how have I missed it???
That is, assuming they are on par with the rest of the bands in that list...

Neofolk group who arent on the PA, but they've pretty much been my discovery of the year so far. All their albums are superb, and the lyricism is impeccable!

While we're on the subject of Neo Folk, i'd like to once again plug "Kiss The Anus of a Black Cat"; they have some post rock elements to boot.
Speakin' of Pelican, i can't stop listening to the latest on their myspace. "What We All Come to Need" can't come soon enough as far as what i need is concerned :D

So I listened to Rome's Flowers from Exile this morning.
I kinda dig it, thought this isn't normally my thing. It definitely fits the general "dark and atmospheric" criterion, which is what I look for most in music.
The instrumental work is tight, and I like the sort of dark ambient noise that goes on throughout the record.
I'll definitely give it a few more listens and I think it'll grow on me more.
My only problem is it seems a little "goth". I don't know what the band looks like but everytime I hear the singer I picture him in a loose white shirt like Fabio, crooning away.
I've only heard the new Pelican stuff once, but they still seem rather lackluster in the past couple of years. I never could get into City of Echoes, and then a friend of mine pointed out to me that they have probably one of the most boring drummers in the genre, and now when I try to listen to them, all I can hear is the drums.

I dont know enough about goth rock to be able to catagorize it. Check out some of their other albums, Flowers from Exile is easily their most folky, but albums like Masse Mensche material are much darker, and much more industrial.
Thats a crying shame, Pelican are in top 3 favorite groups, everything they've made is borderline masterpice IMO, even City of echoes.

sorry it took a while to respond but thanks for all those recs! i downloaded , lets see. . . .
sweep the leg johnny shellac jesus lizard we are knives joe k plan
im trying to find some oxes as we speak. EdIT : Got my hands on Oxxxes and am digging it! thanks
As far as shoegaze goes... if you like Jesu at all you have to at least enjoy some shoegaze, brodrick's stuff is saturated in it. dreamy atmospheric, dripping in distortion.
also, neo folk is decent but far too samesy for my tastes. ive got maybe 6 - 9 albums from the genre (not including some of agalloch's stuff) and its very redundant. Rome's Flowers from exile is nice just for the variety but I could use a change of atmosphere after a while. it gets monotonous. maybe im not listening to the right neo-folk?

^I forgot to mention specific Jesus Lizard albums to check out. Goat and Liar are by far and away their two best. I think Liar is a bit better, but check out both.

I've had that problem as well :D although, i've pretty much gotten good at
blocking out the little things i don't like about a band when; for the
most part, i think that band is great. Also, i still don't like "City of
Echoes" (although "Wind with Hands" is still worth the purchase price
alone imo) either, but i suggest not giving up on them, because
they've gone back to their pre "CoE" days with "Ephemeral", and from the sample of "What We All Come to Need" it seems that they're staying that way.

I love Pelican but drummer Bryan Herweg is the weakest link in the group. Not only boring, but not a very good drummer.
