Nah I actually agree with your argument, basically no band under the sun can fit solely into one classification. However, I just don't feel that Shellac consistently shows elements worthy of having it primarily labeled as math rock.
But obviously, opinion vs. opinion, so let's not take away from the fact that they are a good band!

Shellac don't sound Math much at all, but I suspect in the early 90s their more minimal, linear take on noise/instrumental punk was rather mathy

Cheers!
Atavachron: I guess I grew up on Math Rock of olde, and well, back then, Shellac were considered forerunners of Math Rock.... I am sure that today, for the most part, it has advanced to way more complex realms, but "back in the day...." yadda yadda yadda.

Yes, Shellac is definitely proto-math, but they definitely fit under the math-rock umbrella. They're on the math-rock side of the venn-diagram, not on the overlapping prog section.
On a completely unrelated note, I've just decided that "Low Tide" from the Isis/Areogramme Fishtank session might be one of my favorite songs ever.

Same here. Also, the team work between the percussionists during that song is phenomenal. I wish they would work together some more honestly; i believe that the bands complement each other far more than Adam Jones (as much as i admire him) complements Isis.

I really love the first album and the Silver EP. After that everything gets kind of uninteresting.

Eh, I think Conqueror is good too, but otherwise I agree. Silver is definitely my favorite.

Conqueror was too shoegazy...
Has anyone listened to Infinity? If so is it good, cause one song albums arent my thing, and I'd like to see how well appreciated it is before spending time on it.

First off, what's wrong with shoegaze?
Second, you're the first one to mention the new PT, I do believe.

lol; silly Ian, don't you know what you've just sparked! I see that the "The Incident" is already taking mammoth leaps in the rankings; sadly.... our precious "Part the Second" might be near the end of its time in the light
