Anathema are very, very good... they are from my home town of Liverpool! When they started out, they were a Death Metal Group, but now they have changed style to a more 'progressive rock' sound. They are very heavily influenced by Pink Floyd, especially 'Wall' sounding era Floyd. I have only one album, 'Fragile Dreams' which is regarded on here as not only there best album, but a masterpiece of Prog. I like it very much. It also has 3/4 Pink Floyd bonus tracks covers at the end, which are very very good.
I've listened to snippets on Amazon of the songs on the new album, and it sounds like it's going to be a very good record. let me know what you think when you listen to it, as I may just make a punt myself!
I'd like to compare our CD collections Kashmir!

^OK cool. I think I'm going to really enjoy Anathema then. We ought to compare CD collections, yes! Right now I'm listening to the new Pain of Salvation, which I also bought today. Reminds me of Led Zeppelin...

I've only got one Anathema album, which I really haven't got into at all. I was expecting something completely different, though.

BIG thumbs up for the new PoS though, love that one.

^Yeah, the new POS is really good so far (I've got it on now). Haven't heard the new Anathema yet.

Pain Of Salvation eh!? I've never heard anything by them, although I have heard of them... Led Zep can NEVER be a bad thing.
Anyone into Riverside? I have also been listening to Engineers a lot recently, those guys are brilliant. Both albums are stunners. Shame they had to cancel there support slot for Porcupine Tree last year.

Yeah, indeed! Where do you think my username comes from?Wink

And yes I do like Riverside. I only have the two most recent ones (Rapid Eye Movement, and Anno Domini High Definition) but they're very good.

I know of Engineers, but haven't heard a lot of their music yet. They did remix Abandoner by Steven Wilson on the NSRGNTS RMXS CD!

I've yet to get into Riverside; eventually will check them out though.

Listening to Wild Opera again now, awesome album.

Just bought the latest Pain Of Salvation album after reading through the reviews on Amazon... I've not listened to any of it so hopefully I won't be dissapointed.
Kashmir, you are missing the best Riverside album... The debut 'Out Of Myself' is awsome, a lot different to the other two you have, filled with space rock and the odd folk moment.

I'm a huge fan of Riverside, and frankly they're one of my examples that I use when people complain about the internet.  I think it's so incredibly cool that I guy from Pittsburgh, PA, USA can locate and buy CD's from a relatively obscure band (compared to popular music) from Poland.

Just wondering what's everybody's favourite off Nil Recurring?

Personally I love the title track and Cheating The Polygraph equally. They are my favourite two.  What Happens Now? is not far behind either.  Normal is the weak link for me, I've heard enough of Sentimental I suppose LOL.

I have to say Normal is the strongest, with the title track very close behind. The other two tracks are great, but not quite as strong imo. Fantastic EP, though.

I love every track on Nil Recurring. It's a great EP.

I'm actually listening to Steven Wilson's track on the Pendulum CD now. It's actually a very good and catchy pop song. Co-written by Steve. It would be funny seeing this song played in clubs. It got to number one, this album, in Australia. People would have no idea they're dancing to a SW song, lol.

Regarding Nil, I like all four songs, but the first half of "Cheating the Polygraph" is the best part of the album for me.  Gavin Harrison absolutely shines there, possibly my favorite bit of drum work by him and somewhat reminiscent of Chris Maitland's work in "Last Chance to Evacuate the Planet Earth..."

^Ooooooh, that drumming in the latter half of Last Chance... blows my mind every time.

Oh, I just love the Nil Recurring EP.  I also agree that 'Normal' is the weakest track, but the latter half of the song is quite stunning.  The title track is quite possibly my favorite.

RE Riverside: I have both ADHD and SLS, and I like the former much better than SLSSLS just never clicked with me... it just lacks the lyrical power that I was expecting from it, good musicians though. Anno Domini is a 4 star album, IMO.

I have yet to get a PoS album... any recommendations? I'm assuming Perfect Element, Part One...?

ptkc123, I agree. For me Out Of Myself is the best, but AHAD is a close 2nd. I was very dissapointed with the 2nd and 3rd parts of the 'trilogy', there are one or two belters on each, but I find them a bit repulsive. AHAD is a spectacular return to form!

I like the whole of Nil, and regarding Normal... I prefer it to Sentimental.

I have deep appreciation for 'Sentimental.'  One of the most depressing yet brilliant songs I've ever heard.

Do any of you have a favorite PT track, or more specifically perhaps, a favorite moment

Mine is probably the solo that kickstarts 'Arriving Somewhere But Not Here,' where the drums come in.

The string section at the last chorus in Feel So Low is up there, as well as the last minute of Collapse The Light Into Earth... The keyboard section into the solo in Dark Matter is absolutely amazing as well. The vocal outro to Mellotron Scratch is amazing, it has it's own Last.fm group The hit heaven far too high vocal section and guitar in Fadeaway is amazing as well... And the studio version of Lightbulb Sun has such an awesome ethereal sound to it. I also really love the small silent section in A Smart Kid with the heaving breathing, when it explodes into the chorus...

I'll have to stop myself, too many amazing moments

Also, @Jordan: I've got TPE, BE, Entropia, the Linoleum EP and Road Salt One. BE was the first album I got and really stuck out as amazing, easily one of my top 20 ever albums. It's really hard to get a copy of that one though, I bought mine off another PA member. They charge like 8 pounds to ship the album on their homepage.

TPE is brilliant as well, although not quite as strong imo. Can't go wrong with any of the albums though - I'll point out that BE is much more of a modern prog, VERY concept driven album, and not really metal at all. TPE is pretty straight prog-metal, and Road Salt One is closer to heavy prog more than anything, although much less generically proggy sounding than the rest of their stuff.
