Subject: The official Prog Archives Porcupine Tree Thread!
Date Posted: May 19 2010 at 04:48
For some reason or another, the Porcupine Tree thread got deleted by an admin. So I'll start it up again.
Progkidjoel reliably informs me that the Anesthetise special edition DVD will ship after the standard one!
I hope the Burning Shed will sort out these issues next time theres a special release. They apparently didn't even have the red and grey editions in the warehouse when we placed the preorders a month ago.

Yeah, I think it's really unfair that we've been kept so in the dark about whether or not we'll be recieving it now or in 2 weeks; we were told we would receive the Sp. Ed. before the Standard edition shipped, so I don't think it's at all fair to keep all the fans who payed 45 pounds up front in the dark.

I'm really bummed about this. Normally, Burning Shed are quite good with their ordering service. I have received stuff from them within the week before. They've kinda dropped the ball with this one, big time.
Maybe I ought to buy the standard edition, watch it, and just give it to my brother after the special one ships.

I've already payed enough, I'm definitely not going to buy another copy to make up for their poor service
Still rather annoyed though. Just a tiny bit of communication would be fine, but none at all? Disappointing.

Hi,
I would imagine that the band is touring and busy doing other things for these folks to be able to keep things updated properly ... please give them a chance. I'm positive that it is nothing to be worried about.

No, but some online retailers have posted copies and the preorders from PT's homepage ship out in 4 days, so it's pretty much impossible for the Sp. Ed. to arrive before the standard edition at this rate.
Someone from Burning Shed posted this on the Porcupine Tree forum:
Hi All
I'm sorry about the lack of communication on this but we've been as much in the dark as you!
Here's the latest news:
Blu-Ray discs are scheduled to arrive here middle of next week.
The Special Editions then have to be assembled and shrinkwrapped.
We will assemble/wrap the Red versions first and start shipping them while the Grey ones are being assembled/wrapped.
29th/30th/31st of May is a Bank Holiday (public holiday) weekend so we might not be able to start shipping them until the 1st of June (we will start sooner if we can)
In the meantime we hope to start shipping the standard editions later this week/early next week (though we are also packing the new Pineapple Thief and Anathema albums at the same time).
Thanks for your patience on the Special Editions - I appreciate it is frustrating. If it helps, I've seen one of the finished books and they do look great.
Pete
Which really sucks, since they did say late may.
This Finnish store is already selling it: http://www.recordshopx.com/search/?f=music&q=porcupine+tree - http://www.recordshopx.com/search/?f=music&q=porcupine+tree although I have no idea how fast their international shipping may be.

Man this is a little dissapointing, think it's a little OTT to even consider buying the standard addition for the sake of a weeks wait though, it's not like the Special Editions have been lost at sea or something! I am glad I ordered the Red sleeve though. I reckon they'll be shipping them before the Bank Holiday weekend which would be perfect as I have already booked the Friday off work so I will have a long weekend to listen to everything PT! Can't wait for the IEM boxset too especially considering that I have never heard anything from this project. Oh by the way, glad the thread is back up and running. It's great hearing about other peoples PT/SW obsessions!!!

Hey Palliams, welcome to the site and thread!
Really hope they can get they can get all the Sp. Ed's shipped out before that long weekend, although it's good to finally have some news from them.
Also excited for the IEM boxset, I'll have a lot of SW stuff to go through in June.
Also, BS is now shipping the deluxe remaster of the long OOP no-man album 'Wild Opera'. That comes with a whole ton of B-sides, packaged in a 2CD digibook with new album art, and the 'Dry Cleaning Ray' EP as a bonus on the second disc. That's currently 11.99GBP + Shipping on no-man's BS page.
I'll be ordering that one later tonight!

LOL. I relented. Went into JB Hi Fi the other day, and what should I see on the shelf? The standard edition of Anesthetize, already out? And only 25 smackers!
Without even thinking, I picked it up and bought it! I really am an impatient PT fanboy! So it looks like I have the standard, and grey editions!
Watched it as soon as I got home that evening. Gotta tell you, its fabulous! The sound and picture quality is top notch, the setlist is great. The only shame really is that the standard DVD doesn't have any extra features, just the concert footage.
The Signify songs all sound great live. Dark Matter is a particular highlight of the gig.

I'm glad you got to see it and I can't wait until I do..in a few days hopefully.

Porcupine Tree Anesthetize news: Special Editions will ship from 1/6/10. Standard edition later this week/early next week. Sorry for delays.
-------------
Posted By: Kashmir75
Date Posted: May 22 2010 at 21:51
^Bah!
I suspect the delay is due to the Blu Ray discs not being finished yet. Clearly the packaging and DVDs had been finalised.
But still, how hard is it to stick the footage on a Blu Ray? I'm not an expert, but do they have to do a ton of technological jiggery pokery to transfer the footage to high-def?
------------- Hello, mirror. So glad to see you, my friend. It's been a while...

^The only difference between a Bluray and a DVD is the amount of info it can hold - They both come from the same source material (the original recordings) which is better quality than both DVD's and Blurays, but because Blurays can hold more information, the data that is put on a Bluray has to be compressed significantly less, so the picture/sound and reading speed is much, much faster.
I'm guessing the problem is that Bluray's are at least a bit slower to press than standard DVD's, and also that there's hardly any Bluray pressing facilities compared to the amount of DVD presses because it's still a relatively new format.
Not sure why it's taking this long though - I'm guessing the order just got through/the pressing started a few days late, so that the whole thing got out of order. Just a one day difference would add a few days on either end, due to changing shipping and receiving dates, getting new packaging and postage schedules ready, etc...
I'm still just a little annoyed that BS didn't have the Special Editions even on hand when we ordered over a month ago...

Also, about the Insurgentes DVD release:
The DVD version of the Insurgentes film directed by Lasse Hoile is currently scheduled for release on 27th September as a 2 DVD set on KScope, with a whole raft of extras on the second disc, including an audio section with more songs from the album sessions. More news nearer to the release date....

It would have been nice to hear it in 5.1, with maybe some Out Absentia tracks or something as a special bonus, though.
Also, I'd heard Wilson was on the new Pendulum album. They're pretty big, aren't they? That's pretty cool. Any extra exposure for SW's talents is a good thing, in my book!

Yeah, I'm pretty excited about the reissue regardless of any remastering or anything, it's impossible to get without forking over a boatload of cash.
With that being said, I've got to say, this band has really been growing on me, I saw them two weeks ago and loved the show but the weird thing is that I've been listening to them almost exclusively since the show. If any pays attention to my Last FM numbers, I think Porcupine Tree has shot up over the last few weeks, knocking off a bunch of favorites and barreling down on Genesis. That's almost sacred ground.
Regardless, every time I listen I hear something new. I recently pulled "Buying New Soul" off of my "Lightbulb Sun" bonus disc. Holy crap, how did that song not make it on the regular disc, as I said, I can't wait for "Recordings" to be reissued to get the rest of the out takes. "Stupid Dream" has really been growing on me as well. I absolutely love "Even Less", the creepy numbers read at the end are so haunting.
"Prodigal" and "Dot Three" off of "In Absentia" are both fantastic. The solo at the end of "Prodigal" is worthy of anything that Roine Stolt would pull off and "Dot Three" is just a beautiful laid back piece that builds up beautifully. "Nil Recurring" is a recent pick up and I think every song on that is great. In total, I'm just plain loving this band as of late.

Yeah, they truly are an amazing progressive band! I know Recordings will be another great (re)release from a groundbreaking band. That's awesome that you've seen them live, as I have yet to. Hopefully that changes when I go to college... Nil Recurring is really great and I'd put it up there with their best albums, in my opinion... its beautifully dark and lyrically near-perfect (Nil Recurring is a 5 star track), and the heaviness is never "Dream Theater"-cheesy-heavy... sorry all you DT fans.. It's great to hear other people who really see that this band is one of the greatest prog bands around today, and ever, really..IMO... Keep listening, it will get even better! : )

Hehe, I forgot that
I guess the main point of the reissue is just to make it available on a CD to the hundreds of fans who don't have a copy, more than anything. Although some bonuses would've been nice.

The main bonus of Recordings for me will be to finally have it in my collection! Can't help but feel for anyone who's forked out for it though, as it would seem like a huge waste of money to them now! At least they could have felt a bit better if there were some sort of bonus content added to the new release!

It did make it mainstream. It reached its potential; at the Univers Zero concert last year I was in an audience of 60-70 people, at the Porcupine Tree we were 3000 people
Considering their new shift for a more accessible music with The Incident, I think there is new potential now for growth. But their potential will never be for the "big mainstream" as you put it. IMO of course.

Yeah, I've got the whole studio catalog, a live DVD, EPs, T-shirts, no bumper stickers at the moment. Why PT hasn't made it big mainstream? I think it's against the rules for prog bands to make it big mainstream these days.

In all honesty, "The Incident" debuted at 24 on the Billboard chart. Yeah, I realize that it was mostly fanboys buying the CD the day it came out, but still, that's a pretty good showing, especially for a prog band. I expect the next one to be bigger, possibly even the heralded 'breakthrough' album. Once that happens...well, I can only imagine "Anesthetize" being played in an arena through a billion dollar sound system while a multi million dollar stage / light show goes on a-la a Genesis or Rush show...I for one can't wait.

Also, an email from John Wesley:
Hi Everyone,
It has been a while since I have sent out an update and I wanted to touch base and let you all in on the latest news. The last year has been filled with so much -- between touring with Porcupine Tree, writing for my new album, and moving my recording studio -- I've had my hands quite full.
First off...I am going back on tour with Porcupine Tree for the summer festivals all over Europe. Check the link here for dates:
While out on tour, I've been posting regular updates on Twitter and Facebook. You can sign up to follow me on Twitter or Facebook for my (almost) daily tour updates here:
Next on the agenda is the continued progress of my next set of recordings. My plan is to release an initial 10 song set that consists of full band arrangements entitled, "disconnect". Work is taking place on this in between my heavy Porcupine Tree touring schedule and I hope to be finished by the end of the summer. So far, final drum and bass tracks are complete and I'm spending all of my time until the next Porcupine Tree touring leg tracking guitars.
As in my past releases, Mark Prator is on drums and Andy Irvine and Dave Wehner on bass. Also, I have been working with Dean Tidey, who has been on hundreds of records and spent the last ten years touring with the UK band "Feeder." Dean is producing my new songs and playing guitar as well. I'm very excited about this collaboration and I think the results will be worth the wait.
I have big plans for releases this year! This first set of 10 songs will be followed up by an EP (electric/acoustic) and another EP (all acoustic) by the end of the year. Additionally, I am in the process of mixing and mastering tracks from my performance at the 2009 Marillion Canadian Convention for a new download only release, which will soon be available in my download store. More information will be available about that soon!
I have been in a really productive writing phase and now just need to find the time to get it all recorded. The Porcupine Tree touring has been so successful, that finding time to finish the solo work has been a challenge.
Also, in the past few months, Mark Prator and I moved our studio business, RedRoom Recorders to a new location... come and take look... www.redroomrecorders.com - www.redroomrecorders.com .
Last year while supporting Marillion at the Canadian Convention in Montreal, I had the chance to play with the band Sun Domingo. They recently released a recording of their shows in Montreal called "LIVE in Montreal / Marillion Weekend 2009" through Racket Records. I really think you will love this band if you didn't get a chance to hear them, and they are giving away a few tracks for FREE download here: http://bit.ly/sundomingo - http://bit.ly/sundomingo Also, I played on one of the tracks from on their upcoming studio release "PIECE EP," and the track is "MadMaze" which is set to release on June 22nd from Rock Ridge Music. You can find more info at www.sundomingo.com ... hope you enjoy!
I hope to see you all out on tour somewhere soon...stay well...

And, if you guys don't know already, his entire solo discography is available for free, legal download on his homepage:

The Incident did actually put in a pretty valiant chart showing, yeah. As you say, I suspect it may have been fanboys buying them up as soon as it came out (I got mine the day it hit the shelves), but number 24. That is an impressive effort, when you consider their first album to chart on the Billboard 200 (Deadwing) wallowed away in the lower echelons of the 100s.
This tells us that either they are gaining many new fans, and the word of mouth is spreading; or that the existing fans are getting even more rabid, and ordering 20 copies each instead of one, and distributing them from the rooftops!
So if the Incident got that high, the next album may finally be the one to crack into the top twenty.
One suspects all it would take for the kids to pick up on PT is if Roadrunner managed to get a few tracks into a Guitar Hero game.

^I still need to get some Bass Communion; other than that, I've worked through as much of PT's discog as realistically possible, all of Blackfield's, about 2/3's of no-man's, SW's solo album and all the Cover Versions, and the IEM boxset is on order...
Feel like such a fanboy to think about all of the stuff I have from one man, but it's all been really high quality stuff. No complaints as far as disappointment or anything like it... Other than extreme aural pleasure

I have no Bass Communion stuff, I have tried to give it a chance but it just isn't for me. I have the Best Of No-Man, but apart from the last track (which has an amazing guitar solo from Robert Fripp) on the first disc I don't really care for the rest. I actually think SW has a better voice than the guy singing. Blackfield 1 & 2 are great, for anyone wondering what Blackfield is about, imagine Stupid Dream/Lightbulb Sun era PT, minus the proggier/heavier moments.
Really looking forward to IEM as I have no idea what it's going to sound like, hopefully I won't be dissapointed.
Great to hear feedback about the different age groups by the way.
To all those of you who seem to be a little upset that PT aren't mainstream, 1. SW has always said that he didn't want PT to be mainstream 2. It's a good thing that they aren't because ticket prices would double, if not triple, and you'd have loads of annoying people going on about them who have only heard the latest 'breakthrough' album, and when you try to explain that they have actually been going for 20 years they just look at you funny, similar to what happened when the Kings Of Leon sold out whith there awful 4th album that every indie kid and his/her mum loves.
I like PT the way they are because you will ALWAYS be able to introduce them to people knowing that they will be amazed at how good they are, puzzled as to why they have never heard of them before.

^Yeah, I do like that the venues are more intimate, and you get a better view of the band at a more reasonable price. I think it may be too late for them to become mega mainstream, anyway. How many bands became household names after 20 years of existence? I certainly wouldn't want the Kings of Leon crowd catching on to PT. The Radiohead and Tool crowd, yes.
I haven't heard any Bass Communion yet. The Blackfield I have heard is very good. No Man aren't bad, but I agree that Steven has a better singing voice than Tim Bowness. I might get the limited IEM boxset, but I don't know what to expect, like yourself. I haven't heard a single note of IEM. Do I take a chance because I like Steven Wilson's other work? Maybe.

Bowness is a great singer, just a little off-putting because of his dramatic vocals. It took me a while to get used to him, but now I love Schoolyard Ghosts.... a really fine album.
I must see PT live soon!

Well from what I have read Kashmir, the IEM stuff is supposed to be a similar sound to PT's more spacey work. The 1st album came out shortly after Signify. There's no vocals, just long jams. Sounds interesting enough to me. I know what you mean about taking a chance on it, but from my experience with Wilson releated punts, there's about an 80% of it being worth the risk. The Sky Moves Sideways was my 1st PT purchase and I'd not listened to any PT songs before that, and I wasn't dissapointed with Blackfield or his solo album, as I went about purchasing them in the same way having not listened to any songs from either effort.

I might just take a risk on it, yeah. I enjoy pretty much all of SW's other work, so I'm bound to like it.
When PT moved away from psych/space rock and into song-based structures, IEM took that over, apparently. Or so I've heard.

anyone else than me think that '' Flicker '' from The Incident is PT's best song so far. it's just the perfect middle between space/psychadelic and semi-metal/rock prog of their diffrent albums. I hope they'll keep goin that way

^ For me, Flicker is easily the best of the tracks on disc two of The Incident. It really is gorgeous, those harmonies are melancholic and beautiful.
I also saw one insane post somewhere on PA stating that you can't hear Barbieri on The Incident, that was part of the put-down of the album. Well, just listen to his keyboards on Flicker, stunningly gorgeous.
I know what you mean, hints of the old PT in there, although I reckon there's plenty of those elsewhere on the rest of The Incident too.

I can hear Barbieri all over the Incident. He has his own instrumental track (The Yellow Windows of the Evening Train) for god's sake! I don't get where those criticisms are coming from. And yes, Flicker is a very lovely song. Barbieri wrote Black Dahlia too, IIRC, another beauty of a track.

Flicker is great, but could have been so much more. When I first heard it I was expecting a 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' like epic, but then it just fizzles out after 3:30 mins. It's the only song that really irritates me because of that. Buying New Soul... now there's a perfect example of... well how to write/perform a perfect song I suppose!

Yeah me too. I would like the next album to completely surprise us. In fact, maybe its time for a new era of PT! The psych era lasted for four albums. The pop song era for two. The heavy prog/metal era has now been with us for four albums. The next one should go in yet another direction. I don't think PT have stopped their evolution yet.

I've definitely seen this before, I'm at work so I don't have my actual CD's with me but isn't this an image from Deadwing? I'm thinking either the back or something from the inner sleeve. The black thing is a keyhole if that sparks anyone else's memory.

An album I've been playing a lot is Signify.
I'd always looked upon this as the weakest of the classic early PT cds, and sort of neglected it over the years. I think that was a little unfair, on reflection. Whilst I don't think it's as good as Up The Downstair or TSMS there's a lot of great stuff on it. Waiting 1 and 2 are awesome and I've always loved Intermediate Jesus, that's a fantastic track (and a brilliant title ). Dark Matter is pretty special too. Hell, it's all good.
One thing I will say is the bonus cd on Signify isn't as good as the bonus cd for UTD or TSMS. However the real "extra" cd from this period I suppose is the Metanoia album that was recorded during those sessions. That's a brilliant cd in my opinion but one that's almost universally loathed .
Just interested to see what the rest of you guys think.

Great to hear Kashmir, I'm pretty sure you'll love the two Blackfield albums. The live CD/DVD is a must if you enjoy those two as well.
RE Roj on Signify; it's the disc I visit the least, although it's still fantastic. Dark Matter is absolutely stunning, and Waiting Phase One is beautiful. As far as Insignificance grows, I really love the Wake as Gun I and Wake as Gun II tracks as well as Smiling Not Smiling, although I rarely visit the rest...
Metanoia is a fantastic album for studying or writing assignments to, but again, I rarely visit it. I find it a bit straining to listen to the entire thing one way through in full focus, though.

I'm pretty sure I'll love Blackfield, based on the samples I've heard, and based on your words. I've heard its like the SD/LS era of PT. If so, I'll adore it, as they're two of my favourite PT albums.
As for Signify, I love that album. I spin it maybe the most out of PTs space rock era. It's a very transitional album (half songs, half spacey ambience), and you can hear the seeds of their later work starting to happen. Waiting, Sleep of No Dreaming, and Dark Matter are all gorgeous songs. Every Home Is Wired almost sounds like a Stupid Dream era song, with its vocal harmonies. Even their metal side is hinted at, with the title track's riffing.
As for Metanoia, well, that's one I don't play that often. I can take it in chunks, but I rarely get through it all in one sitting. It's better for background ambience, than for actual attentive listening. If I had a gun to my head, I'd have to pick that as my least favourite PT release. It's not bad, though. No PT album is.

According to someone over on the PT Forum website, PorcupineTree were raved about in the UK Times newspaper, by the guy from the band Pendulum (who are making it big with their new album)! The Times is a pretty major newspaper, so this exposure is certainly a good thing.
On one hand, I like it that PT are our little secret. But on the other, I really do think they deserve more success. The Pendulum guy said that 'Have you heard of this band Porcupine Tree? Steve Wilson is one of the best songwriters in the UK'

Eh, if they were any bigger, it'd be a lot less fun to go to shows and to get the Sp. Editions... There's no chance that I'd have got the Red edition of Anesthetize if they were as big as say Muse or Radiohead.
I definitely would've enjoyed the show a lot less too, and at a higher price I might add.
-------------

Yeah. I see your point. If PT were Muse or Radiohead big, there's no way in hell we'd get either the red or grey editions! Ticket prices would be a lot higher.
The media is partly to blame for PTs less than A league status. The mags and papers kind of anoint a few darlings and write about them nonstop. Like the above mentioned Muse, for one example.
So whenever Rolling Stone or someone writes 'PT are a band you may not have heard of', well, duh. It's because you guys never promote or write features on them!

^You've more patience than I, then! When I was in JB Hi Fi last time, I just was forced to buy it! Couldn't resist. I'm still excited for the special edition though, with the Blu Ray and audio discs. And the lovely shiny packaging and art book. PT really do have lovely packaging which looks great on your CD shelf.
I have to stop myself walking into JB Hi Fi these days, as I can't seem to come out without buying something! I may have to put a lock on Burning Shed's website as well, for the same reason!
Speaking of PTs great artwork, what's your favourite album cover? I really like the Lightbulb Sun design, myself. And In Absentia is a good one, it really creeps me out.

JB hifi sure know how to bring me down; nearly every friday I stop by and leave with a CD when I'm usually just planning to walk past straight through to the bus stop
The one which immediately jumps out at me is always Lightbulb Sun, love the grey photo with the glowing orange. The original Stupid Dream art is great, although the art on the remastered packaging looks like a Sony ad Really dislike their new choice of art for that one.
I really love Signify as well. In all honesty, their art has been getting less spectacular over the years for me. UTD through Stupid Dream have amazing art, and IA/Deadwing/The Incident all seem a lot less intriguing and multi-faceted to me.
Nil Recurring has pretty cool art, though. Especially the booklet.

Yes, I prefer the original SD art, to the reissue. It does look like a Sony ad campaign.
The photography in their booklets is still quite interesting. The promotional photos by Lasse Hoile for FOABP and The Incident are creepy and suitably unnerving. I've got a few PC wallpapers of some of the FOABP/Incident promo photos.
