I've picked up complaints about the quality of the DVD, so have held off buying it.

Actually, as much as I love the Marbles on the Road DVD (one of the finest gigs of all time) I really do need to get a fresh live DVD. So, now that I am, hopefully, back on the forum a little more regularly, what are the recommendations? Best reviews/comments gets my hard earned cashLOL

Laz,  I think you're thinking of another DVD, the 2009 convention DVD has not been released yet, hope the qualiy is good.  I'm getting it once it's released so I'll let you know.  kenmar

Thanks all, and especially Kenmartree - I will certainly get the DVD when it is released, if only on the basis of the recommendation of the convention by the one and only E-Dub.

As for my birthday money, it will be Somewhere in London, so thanks Joel. I know that any recommendation by you  is worth a mint.

I will report back when I've got it, played it, and annoyed the wife with itLOL

Lazland,  true I value Eric opinion as well, but it is likely that the DVD will be Europe only, so no crowd surfing by H there.  I asked about Montreal footage on the thread at Marillion.com but no response.  kenmar

marillion fans,  I just went to marillion.com and my thread has gotten discussion going about the new DVD, including the montreal show.  Nothing from the film makers but there was a full film crew and crane at montreal so the footage exists.  go the the website and voice your comittment to buy the montreal show and I think it could happen.  kenmar

Bonjour guys,

When I was reading a bit here around the archives about Marillion, I noticed there are quite a lot of people who listen to the h.-era, but consider Brave as a mediocre or even their weakest (so I've read) album...Shocked

Now, I have to admit I wasn't into Brave myself 'till a year or 2 ago...I don't know why, but it just had to hit me or something... My dad loves the album and told me to listen to it a couple of times; it never got hold of me. One day, however, when I came home from school and had to go to a friend in about half an hour, I thought I might as well spend the remaining minutes listening to Brave and all of a sudden it hit me I played it two times in a row with about ten minutes of silent couch-sitting between the two spins. Completely stunned I was, struck by the emotion, darkness and subtleness (if that's a word...) of the record. I just don't know why I had that change of heart towards the album, but I notice quite a lot still haven't had such a thing, so: how did Brave appeal to you all, Marillion fans? Was it "love at first sight"? did it grow on you? or did you have that sudden change of heart towards it, like I had?
Anyway, I have got hold of Brave Live 2002 about two months ago and well, the brilliance just spat off the stage by (one of our) favourite band(s)!

Joren

PS. Though I find the album to be very subtle, I can understand why some of the people here on PA find it very ehm...barbarian and a not very graceful. I mean, I can imagine what they hate about it, I can even feel it if I want to, I guess (God, this really sounds exaggerating xD)...But, if I can feel how they feel, why then won't they feel how I (we?) feel?! WHY, WHY, WHY IS THIS WORLD SO CRUEL TO ME!!!!!....

Ok, maybe the last bit was a bit too...But hey, I'd like to hear your Brave-stories...Smile

Brave did that with me too - Took a really long time to quick, but when it did, it was magnificent

Also, glad to hear you got a copy of Brave Live 2002... Brilliant concert, and once again, it really re-transforms the experience over again. Awesome disc

First listen to Less = More, and I am really enjoying it.  Are all of the songs from H era Marillion or did they tackle any Fish era Marillion? Are these all re-recordings or are there some new songs on here too?

Hi Scott. Glad you're enjoying what is to me a great album.

There are no Fish era recordings - with a back catalogue stretching back twenty years now, the band really don't feel the need to revisit those days very often, and I agree with this. There is one new track - It's Not Your Fault.

Welcome to the forum Joren and this thread in particular.

I did not buy Brave immediately upon release. Holidays in Eden had profoundly disappointed me, and I couldn't see which direction the band were going in , or whether I would wish to follow.

Then a friend stated that it was absolutely the greatest thing he had ever heard, from this or any other band. I remember well the first listen, because I had just had my new kitten (who died earlier this year) and he was absolutely petrified at the racket coming from the strange black things on the wall!

I didn't get it straight away - that took about 7 to 8 listens, and then it just clicked. The absolutely pure and raw emotion and energy of the piece as a whole, rather than just individual tracks, just took my breath away. This is a narrative, and a damn fine one as well.

The most important thing about Brave was it enabled me to reconnect with the band I had loved since the early Marquee days, and was a launch pad for a whole new, exciting, and diverse era.

A quick question guys:

Do any of you have the 2CD remaster of Afraid of Sunlight? There's one particular track on the second disc called Mirages, which is a Demo, although the song is absolutely fantastic. Not just good, but to these ears, it sounds like asbolutely classic Marillion material! I'm not sure if it ever materialized into a full track on another Marillion album, but its absolutely fantastic.

The lyrics are great too!

Absence makes the heart go mad
All the solid things become mirages
The certain things
Sand running in the hour glass
Running away
I scream along the ledge
As the windows back and close
I run around try to prove the sunrise
I believe in belief
But it's proof I need
Can you show me it's me
Can you show me it's me

Travelling makes the mind go vague
All the special faces fade away
Spinning like a heat haze
Shimmering

Please send Polaroids
Or an ear in the post
A map to the treasure
A key to the closed
I need you like hell
Can you help me again
Can you show me it's me
Can you show me it's me

I run dry
I run out
I run cold
I need help
Trying to prove the sunrise
Trying to prove the tides
Trying to prove the blue moon sky
And is it you?
Is it you?

Also, if you haven't already seen this site, I think you'll really like it: http://marillion.baldyslaphead.co.uk/albums/Market/MSH.htm

It has in depth song explanations and interviews with the guys about the inspiration for the lyrics, really interesting stuff!

Also, just though I'd say merry christmas to everyone, particularly in this thread - Its been great discussing Marillion and their magic with you guys, and I can't wait for the conversations to come

Wowy, Joel, this is a very nice lyric, I have to say. It's too bad I only have the 1 disc version of AOS, or actually, my dad has. Anyway, when I'll move out in a couple of years, I will try and purchase all the Marillion material for myself! Anyway, as far as I know the song hasn't been on any album, though, mayby it has been played on one of the frontrow club shows, as there are so many of those, it will be the most likely option!
And that site, really nice! I am a lyric-man, so it is great to have an explanation for some parts you've never really understood - there were a quite a few of these parts in GrendelTongue - and it is also nice to read comments of band-members (especially Fish and h.) on the lyrics and story lines..

Have a happy christmas too, and a merry new yearWink

Yes mirage is a great song,  the best from that second disc of AOS though I like the soft version of the song AOS as well.

Merry Christmas to all, would like to be visiting Joel down under at this time of year, a winter convention in Oz would be nice but a long expensive plane ride.

Sorry Joel, I still only have the original CD which was purchased on the day of release. That is a wonderful lyric, and I would be interested to see if I could get the 2nd CD without having to repeat the purchase of the first.

Also, may I wish you (oh how I wish I was living in a heatwave - it's cold hereOuch) and, of course, all other users of the Archives, but most especially my favourite thread, a very peaceful Christmas and happy new year.

Actually, to say it propoerly, Nadolig Llawen ac Blwyddyn Neuadd Dda.

I thought I'd hop on my favorite thread to wish you guys a very Merry Christmas and a blessed 2010. I may come back after the holidays are over.

I hope you guys are WebUK members and got the new live DVD, Snow de Cologne. Could be one of the best Marillion DVD's I have.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Joel, that is incredibly kind - thank you very much. Any chance of the actual cake being flown over from Oz?LOLLOL

I've had a lovely day. As I just posted on TFK thread, I am sat at the pc blasting out The Whirlwind for the first time, and my first impressions are very favourable - review to follow in the New Year. This was my birthday present from my special little son, bless him.

I also downloaded Phideaux's Number Seven, so will listen to that later. As regards your recommendation for Big Big Train's new LP, this was not available on download from Amazon, so I ordered the CDClap

I've had such a lovely family day. Of course, though, no special day would be complete without the world's greatest band, and the late night blast on the home cinema system before I go to bed will be the Happiness on the Road gig from Brighton 2009 that I downloaded from Racket Records a while ago. All of it is brilliant, and I recommend that all users of this great thread get at least one of the tour gigs from the band, and the versions of Invisible Man & Real Tears For Sale are particularly powerful on this one.

Happy daysBig smile
