I decided to check them out seeing how highly you thought of them and I was not disappointed. These two albums are definitely right up my alley. I'm getting strong Krautrock vibes from them with a nice blend of electronica. I couldn't say which one of the two I preferred on a first listen as they are fairly dense and experimental but I greatly enjoyed both. I feel like checking out some of their other material but their discography is quite hard to navigate since they're so unknown. I'm thinking of buying As It is Spoken It Shall Be Done and We Can't Help You if We Can't Find You next, any thoughts? Mogwai - Hardcore Will Never Die but You Will Ozric Tentacles - Pungent Effulgent

Lots of great selections on this page!
Today I contributed a set to my friend’s internet radio show, making these selections based on the genre template he prescribed: 2 - classic rock songs: I Want You (She’s So Heavy) | Beatles Asylum | Supertramp 1 - country song Tonight I’ll be Staying Here with You | Bob Dylan 1 - jazz song Teeth | Soft Machine 1 - song from before you were born Land of Make Believe | The Easybeats 1 - singer-songwriter song Stranger in Blue Suede Shoes | Kevin Ayers 1 - blues song Made Up my Mind | Savoy Brown 1 - song from your fave album ever Victoria Sage | Jack Bruce Jack Bruce isn’t quite my favorite album ever, but it’s close. Figured I had enough long songs in there already, and a 20 minute Can track might have been a bit much. It’s kind of an old time classic rock show in general. Plus I listened to these albums today at work and in the car: Slint | Spiderland Chromatics | Night Drive The Dead C | Armed Courage Esmectatons | Nefelibata Jandek | Camber Sands Sunday |

That Slint album was something else, literally. For some reason I thought they were shoegaze before actually listening to them. Yep, something else...but still mighty cool.
Stone Temple Pilots - Purple: I saw them in the late 00's and Scott looked like he was ready to drop dead between songs, complete with smacked out attempts at stage banter. But damn, during the songs he was on his game, singing great. It was like his non-singing persona was an act. In retrospect, maybe not an act. The Waterboys - This is the Sea: Good lyrics. I remember thinking ages ago how this album is going to stand the test of time. It doesn't though...the drums and horns are pure time capsule stuff. Martika - Martika's Kitchen: You can hear Prince all over this. It's dated in a time capsule way as opposed to her debut, which was more cheeseball novelty dated. The title track has fun lyrics, but her voice can't really handle some of the funk cuts. Prefab Sprout - Two Wheels Good: I'm kinda down with this. Some jazziness at times and good songs. A couple of tunes I actually knew but didn't know they were by them. I like when that happens... sudden nostalgia trip. Bruce Haack - The Lucifer Experiment: Tripped out psychedelic pop with crazy old-school electronics. Pure 1970 goodness, with some of the poppier numbers early on being standouts. Hell, I even hear a bit of Radiohead at times. "Incantation" is my fav...what a messed up switch to the chorus! OMD - Dazzle Ships: Wow. The nuttier Eastern Bloc collage deals are even more awesome than the songs. This is time capsule music in the best way possible. Really unique, and yeah, maybe Radiohead heard this too when leaving the grungy stuff behind. |

I really like that STP album, and the one after it (Tiny Music). I remember hating them at first, around the time of their very popular debut album where the hits sounded a little too close to Pearl Jam (who I never liked). But I did see them in concert around that time. Dig this bill, at a huge outdoor amphitheater, no less:
Opener: The Flaming Lips (around the “She Don’t Use Jelly” time) 2nd opener: Stone Temple Pilots, who seemed to have the most fans, fratboys all Headliner: The Butthole Surfers, who I came to see, touring their major label debut Independent Worm Saloon” (a fine album, I think) One of the weirdest lineups I’ve seen. Gotta say that as much as I love the B Surfers, they don’t really go over well in a huge outdoor amphitheater. STP’s arena rock was much more well received. The Flaming Lips barely even registered. No one knew who they were yet, except for “Jelly”. They did play my favorite Lips song at the time, though, “One Million Billionth of a Millisecond on a Sunday Morning”. Anyway, back to STP. I really like the more eccentric but equally radio friendly direction they took after their debut. I often referred to them as the Steve Miller Band of the 90s, meant as a compliment. Just good catchy riff-happy rock songs that sound great on the radio. One of the better singles bands of their time. |

Yeah, when STP first came out, I thought of them as a Pearl Jam/Alice In Chains hybrid with a bit of Nirvana thrown in to add to the derivative feel. Then "Interstate Love Song" came out. This has to be one of the only times an added twang could improve a band so much, because that tune just totally won me over. Then I heard Purple and dug it. Still not big on Core but I did sing along to the hits from it live...they could work a crowd.
Your gig seemed way more interesting than mine, which had a lot of also-rans like Filter and Pennywise. Never saw Flaming Lips, but I did see the Surfers in 88. That was nuts. |

Ohhh, so glad you liked them! As It is Spoken is also excellent. The dark Krautrock vibes of (dead slow, no wake) are still prominent there, but what I consider the most memorable track from the album (the opener) also makes me think of some Canterbury mixed with noise-doom or something like that. We Can't Help You is also very good, at times lacking a sense of direction, but the opener again, "Ancaster Heights," is probably the "best-known" track by them and one they also seem to like very much, a very tasty blend of Harmonia-like proto-minimal synth electronics, Terry Riley-esque minimalism with some Canterbury modes also. The Smiling Wilderness is really good, too, probably their most ambient album, it really does sound like the title. I like Disturbing Ground and (dead slow, no wake) the most out of their discography, the former just a teeny bit more. The ones I discussed above are all incredible albums, though. Yesterday: Lee Bannon - Alternate/Endings The Electric Prunes - Mass in F Minor The United States of America - The United States of America
