I'm appalled about liking Robespierre though...

I can't say I have much love for the French Revolution, although I can certainly understand a desire to get rid of the monarchy.

I like Victor Hugo's novel Ninety-Three on the subject. Although he clearly sympathizes with the republicans, he tries to present a fair and balanced view and shows that both sides were kind of stupid. He is a great writer.

By the way, this thread is now about the French Revolution.

You know what the French Revolution tells you? Stern Smile

Naturally a political debate about taxes and the rightful place of government shall ensue.

We all know Stalin also killed millions, what I never hear about was how during WWII Japan killed tens of millions of Chinese.
I've read The Rape Of NanKing-pretty terrible what they did

All the holocaust survivors are heroes. They are great people.
Hitler and the Nazis are idiots.

Okay, since we've decided that the Holocaust is bad now.

Anyone interested in discussing the (popular) eugenics movement in the US?

I don't think eugenics is a good idea, Rob. I am willing to stand on principle and say I think we shouldn't do eugenics. Do any of you have the courage to join me?

I wouldn't worry about sterilizing you.  Not like you're getting any anyway.

"Do eugenics."

Reminds me of how last Friday I had my students write an essay on integrity since they had none when I was out (they did whatever they wanted instead of their assigned tasks).

One girl wrote, "I will do integrity every day."

Weren't you ever a kid Rob?  I will admit that kids seem to have got worse as I've gotten older, but damn man, sub day is party time, even when I was a kid.

Back on topic:  I'm not sure what you mean by eugenics.  Some people consider the pro-choice movement to be a form of eugenics.  If so, I'm staunchly in favor of eugenics.  If you mean forcibly sterilizing people, then of course, I'm staunchly opposed.
I can understand your anger at me, but what did the horse I rode in on ever do to you?

Rob's students are all in their late 20s, so the kid excuse doesn't fly.

We made fun of our subs but still got our work done.

I don't consider the "pro choice movement" to be a form of eugenics in that capacity.  I see it as a "pro convenience movement.

I'm surprised you're against forcibly sterilizing people.  You are okay with forcing many other things on people.

One thing I find about conservative opinions is that they always want to equate forcing people to do certain things with their property to be exactly the same as force against a person's body.  Remember those jackasses who equated Obamacare with the Holocaust?  They are two completely separate issues.  Sorry, but they are.  Saying you must pay a certain percentage of your income in taxes which is then to be redistributed is quite different from saying we're going to perform an invasive surgery on you so that you may no longer have children.  See the difference?

Besides, I just want everyone to enjoy the "freedom" you champion, not just the few at the top, who can then force their will on the rest of us thus denying the majority of the people any freedom at all.

I don't think there is a difference, because if you refuse to comply with the demands on your money, eventual they will do harm to your body.

"Always want to" yet you cite zero examples.  "Those jackasses?"  Don't know who you mean.

But yah- Property laws are derived from the right to life.  The government does not have a right to my house any more than it has a right to my arm.

Let's suppose there is a grave need for blood in the country.  People will die without the blood banks acquiring more blood.  Do you believe the government has the power to force people to give blood?

I think the discussion regarding the Holocaust has pretty much run its course, given the number of side issues being discussed (this thread effectively died a good few months ago & was only resurrected by a spammer).

Feel free to continue discussions regarding Eugenics elsewhere
