And no, my father listens to pop and some 80's new wave. My mother listens to Elvis, Johnny Cash, and Jimmy Buffett.

So far these statistics are very interesting and actually a bit surprising. It seems that those in their thirties are few and far between on here at least compared to other age groups. It's not their fault. It seems to me that those in certain age groups are just more likely to be exposed to this music. Those in their twenties and younger have the advantage of having parents old enough to be into the classic period and have been exposed to it that way. Just tonight at a book store I saw the last edition of PROG magazine there so that is good for prog's exposure but I don't many thirty somethings will look at it and go "wow, prog what is that?"

I myself am 44 and finally voted. I got into this genre in the mid eighties(mainly through YES, Genesis and King Crimson at least initially).

Glad to see a few wrinklies around here, I was starting to feel old with all the 20 somethings. I guess those 30 somethings grew up before the resurgence of prog as a niche genre

I think that's part of it. I think they fall in between the cracks so to speak and are at an age where they are less likely to be exposed to it. I think a big part of it also is that they don't have parents who are the right age to be exposed to prog.

My guess is that you guys are mainly in the 15-25 age range since many seem to focus on newer bands that most older fans probably wouldn't be aware of(ie Mars Volta, DT etc). I'm 35 and I usually feel young in the world of prog but it could be different in here. If so that's a good thing because it means prog is finally gaining a new generation and reaching a younger audience. :) [/QUOTE">

Dean, not sure why you felt the need to give me the rolly eye there. If you have been to as many prog shows and festivals as I have it wouldn't be an unreasonable assumption since the younger folks seem to be few and far between most of the time(aside from those who are there with their parents).

Did you discover this genre through your parents?

Nope. First prog I heard was Radiohead but didn't consider them prog at the time, a friend showed me Dream Theater and I dug that for quite some time before delving into the 70s bands about when I signed up.
