Just curious as to how old members are on here and maybe see if I can figurer out if there is an average age. This is just for fun. I tend to think most prog fans are a bit on the older side so I want to see if my assumption is correct or not.

I just turned 59.  I saw CTTE tour in 1972, Relayer in 1973, LTIA tour in 1973 etc.

I've met Fripp, Wakeman, Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, Alan White, Bill Bruford.....just about anyone I ever wanted to meet.

Age doth have its advantages.

So far these statistics are very interesting and actually a bit surprising. It seems that those in their thirties are few and far between on here at least compared to other age groups. It's not their fault. It seems to me that those in certain age groups are just more likely to be exposed to this music. Those in their twenties and younger have the advantage of having parents old enough to be into the classic period and have been exposed to it that way. Just tonight at a book store I saw the last edition of PROG magazine there so that is good for prog's exposure but I don't many thirty somethings will look at it and go "wow, prog what is that?"

I think that's part of it. I think they fall in between the cracks so to speak and are at an age where they are less likely to be exposed to it. I think a big part of it also is that they don't have parents who are the right age to be exposed to prog.

Dean, not sure why you felt the need to give me the rolly eye there. If you have been to as many prog shows and festivals as I have it wouldn't be an unreasonable assumption since the younger folks seem to be few and far between most of the time(aside from those who are there with their parents).

Nope. First prog I heard was Radiohead but didn't consider them prog at the time, a friend showed me Dream Theater and I dug that for quite some time before delving into the 70s bands about when I signed up.

I see no "rolly eye" ... I see a couple of "erms" ... in the space of nine years you have changed your tune from thinking we're all mainly a youthful bunch to thinking we're all a bit on the old side ... I find the idea that we've aged so much in 9 years to be very amusing, so I rofl'd.

The last prog festival I went to was indeed filled with people who look exactly like me, and the last prog gig I attended was also filled to capacity with people who look exactly like me. Neither of these observations are surprising as headline at the festival was Asia and the capacity gig was for The Enid - both attract an older demographic for numerous reasons. I suspect the gigs and festivals you attend are also those that attract a more elderly clientčle because the attendees are mainly of the older generation. The only modern Prog gigs I tend to go to are Prog Metal, there the audience is considerably younger and I'm one of the few exceptions at those giggles who needs a bit of a sit down mid-way through the set to rest from all that head-bunging. Gig attendance demographics do not necessarily reflect the true picture of the demographic that buys the CDs or downloads the music - there are prog fans who never attend live concerts and there are those whose interest fades during the bit of a band's set when they stop playing their greatest hits to air a new song so chose that moment to take a pee-break or another trip to the bar. We've already seen from other threads and polls that many of the PA members of the younger set are well versed in the older prog scene, and while not as prevalent, there are some of us geriatrics who are up to speed on the modern Prog and Prog Metal scenes; few of us like to be pigeon-holed and this is probably why we dig Prog.

Generalisations are tricky things, you have to consider all the factors involved and ensure that you are comparing apples with apples.

Well first of all I didn't know you were keeping tabs on me but you are absolutely right I do change my mind. Actually it's more like not being able to get a handle on it not that it really matters but it is interesting. Sometimes it seems like prog fans are a bit on the younger side and sometimes it seems like they are a bit older(not that there's anything wrong with that). This poll has made me think that there is actually a big age gap. So yeah there are lots of older fans and lots of younger fans with the lowest number of fans being in the middle. How's that? I think the older fans show up more at festivals because a)they generally have children that are all grown up and so no family obligations and b)tend to have more financial stability and can afford it. There's also the factor of location. There might be more fans of a certain age in South America than there are in the US or wherever. I have a degree in Sociology so statistics and demographics are things that are interesting to me.

I recalled there have been several threads on this topic - I did a simple search and your previous thread came up first. Nothing sinister, just knowing how and when to use the search function. Most polls produce a similar split much like this one, but if you want to see the correlation between age and location look at http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=52010" rel="nofollow - this poll by Peter , however the sample size is too small to have any meaning.

What you are polling is not the whole demographics of Prog Fans, but a sample demographic of Prog Fans who have time to waste on an internet forum that can be bothered to click a button.

Interesting. Most of the voters are actually younguer than I would have expected, which I guess is actually a good thing, it means prog is very much well and alive at this age. I would have thought that most of the prog fans would be older than me, since I was born after the golden age of prog, but the majority is actually younger than me.

My previous thread was "what decade did you first get into prog" which is not quite the same thing. Yeah, some of us have time to waste and we do that by posting things that we find interesting. Others are more interested in analyzing their fellow prog fans motives for starting threads and trying to shame them(for whatever reason).

*sigh*

1. Your previous thread was indeed "what decade did you first get into prog", which was last year so could not be the nine year-old thread I quoted (and linked btw).

2. Your previous previous thread was " http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=11315" rel="nofollow - How old are Prog Archive members? " which is exactly quite the same thing.

3. For the last time - I couldn't give a flying fart what your motives are - I found your previous previous thread because I was looking for older threads on the same subject to see if the membership demographic had changed over the years (it seems we've all been here too long and just gotten 10 years older). As I said it's nothing sinister and I haven't the desire nor wit to "keeps tabs on you" - you're really not that interesting and fast becoming even less interesting.

4. On finding that you had asked the same question 9 years ago but starting from an opposing presumption I thought was amusing - so I laughed - how sour do you have to be to not find that amusing? If that shames you then that's not my effing fault.

peace out.

Looks like that poll must have been done before the discovery of Australia.
It's certainly an old poll so the three people who voted "other" probably hadn't discovered Australia either.

No I just don't get why you have to be so belligerent about it. Some of your comments are completely unnecessary not to mention unacceptable.

For the record, the first was a thread only the second was a poll and yes people are allowed to change their mind believe it or not.

I don't recall ever criticising you for starting two near identical threads - the time span between them is more than sufficient reason to re-ask the question.

Well ok so 9 years ago it seemed to me that members on here leaned toward the young side but now it seems to me that prog fans(and not necessarily members on here)are still mostly old enough to remember first hand the seventies bands. I changed my mind slightly but was coming from a different angle. I don't see why that's so amusing or what the big deal is.

I'm 32 and I had my first experience with progressive rock when I was 4. Rush were the first prog band I ever heard. I believe it was the "A Show Of Hands" concert, but we also used to have 'dance nights' at the house and Rush would be featured on the turntable quite frequently.

Hmmm...so far we have 87 people responding with 44 being under 40 and 43 members over 40.
A pretty even breakdown which surprises me a little. I assumed there would be many more over 40 since so many of us older guys grew up listening to the old time classic  prog bands .
As an example my son in law doesn't really listen to prog even though I have tried my best and he's 31. My other son in law 32 doesn't listen to prog either and my daughter's ex  husband who is 34 listens to some prog and heavy metal but not really to old or new prog bands per se.
The only people I know in person who listen to all kinds of prog are all about 50  and older.

Half the people over 50 I know don't even own computers let alone have internet access, so that surely plays a part

Not quite sure what you mean, can you remember what your were listening at 4? A Show Of Hands is from 1989, that's 25 years ago so if you are 32 now things do not add up, you were at least 7 when you heard it for the first time.

it might've NOT been '89 when he first heard (or seen) it
