there are many frontmen that can play but don't. From what I saw on the Howard stern video she has a bout a grade 3 or 4 ability. Someone showed me a video of this geeky poro star playing the piano and it was like watching a 6 year-old play and the hosts of the show paraied the creep.

Even if I don't know who Sorabji is, I know what you mean and that's exactly my view.

Sometimes proggers think that prog musicians are the best on everything, why question MTV that they put pop music? Dude, it's pop for some reason. There was a time were Collins-era Genesis was on MTV, Dire Straits, not anymore. These are trends.

Why don't ask for classical or jazz music on MTV? Blues? Death metal? Post rock? etc, etc..

And by the way, the last time I saw MTV actually putting on some music was like 4 years ago, here in Argentina it's like complete oddity were they put on lame American shows.

Well, I doubt Emerson could match Barbara Dennerlein or Rhoda Scott on the organ.   It goes on and on, people tend to assume the best THEY have heard is THE best ever.    It's not really peculiar to pop music.  I remember somebody here had difficulty believing Stevie Wonder was a better singer than Neal Morse when I said so, so I guess we all have our cocoons and comfort zones to some extent.

Exactly.Clap

I'm pretty sure I read that Lady Gaga tried to make it as a piano-based singer-songwriter, but career didn't exactly take off. Then she decided to go for broke with image and here she is.

Anyone who has done regular gigs at their instrument is going to have some skills. Meaning she could probably kick all of our amateur arses easily. Comparing her to other professional key players is another matter, and I doubt she would even make that claim.

She created an entertainment product that has worked very well in this place and this time.

Lady Gaga is one of the more talented "talentless hacks" that exist within the music industry.
And a lot of pop musicians are still amazing musicians despite the bullsh*t that they play.

And we're talking best piano player ever?

Rachmoninov and Franz Lizst changed my life forever when I heard them play.

They are the reason that I can write 24 chord chord structures that modulate between keys. Rachmoninov specifically had hands so large that 99% of even the BEST piano players in the world can't play everything he wrote based off sheer hand size.

How old are you? Franz List died sometime in the1880s and Sergei Rachmaninoff died in the 40s. Well maybe you could have heard Sergie if you're over 60 years old. I think you're talking about their compositions. They both wrote on the piano. I think it is their compositions you are fond of.

Brahms is actually my moog man, when I'm touring - all he wants in return is to be paid in Absinthe and skanky hoes.

We should probably go back to arguing between Yes and Genesis rather than having a conversation about GaGa huh?

Damn!

I was just going to flip on The Police's Ghost in the Machine there... Oh well I'll do so anyways.

Back on topic: Gaga in a progressive setting?
Does she/he have a weener?
Did she play the oboe on Relayer?
Is Fernando the long lost vocal piece in the middle of Moonchild?

I'm waiting for the new Justin Bieber prog album.   Supposed to have Rick Wakeman on keys, Andy Latimer on guitars, Bill Bruford on drums and Chris Squire on bass.

I am competent enough to let you know that Lady Gaga is a better piano player than Rachmaninoff, but not Liszt.

Lady Gaga plays basic piano at best.  And she's ugly to boot.
