Actually I was pretty well versed in prog when I got here also.  But the only ones right now that I can think of that I learned from here are:

  • French TV
  • Frogg Cafe
  • Rocket Scientists
  • Farpoint
  • Glass Hammer
  • Enchant

I'm sure there are others..

THIS IS ELP

My short list so far:

Aufklarung (good)
Crack (very good)

Before I joined I had done lots and lots of research so I was already familiar with bands that suite my prog taste. I enjoy this forum for other reasons!

Pretty much anything beyond KC/DT/Rush/Marillion/Pain of Salvation/Mostly Autumn/Floyd/a few others. Sure, I'd heard of Genesis and Yes and ELP, but I'd never listened to them. I couldn't list my favourites, but the Soft Machine'd be up there.

Harmonium

Shub Niggurath

Aka Moon

National Health

...to name just a few (although the only one of these four I hadn't heard of earlier is Harmonium, the rest I've heard good things about, but it's only thanks to PA that I got the chance to check them out)

Everon so far... I'm going to try Magellan & Glass Hammer next... when I can afford it!

Really interesting this thread -
seems like the vast majority of people making a
thorough investigation of the site have never heard
Italian Symphonic Prog of the 70s before, me
included.
before coming to the site I had no idea of the
existence of bands like PFM, Banco and Quella
Vecchia Locanda and even if I had heard of them I
probably would have dismissed them out of hand as
bad europop, prog-lite.
I realise this is narrow-minded but I would have
been judging them on past exeperiences of
continental pop music (most of it's rubbish).
I think it proves two things:
1. The value of MP3 downloads (illegal or not). I was
able to dip a toe in the Italian water, liked what I
found and after immersing myself for a while and
confirming my appreciation for the the music went
out and bought a load of it. Thus I didn't do anythign
harmful to the artists except sample their wares and
then bolster their incomes and...
2. Imagine what could have happened with these
bands in the 70s if more people like us had had
access to their records. How big could they have
become? A crying shame and mostly because most
of us can't stand listening to lyrics in a language
other than English. Shame! If we had embraced it a
little more maybe we would have got an absolutely
phenomenal third album from Quella Vecchia.
maybe PFM wouldn't have fragmented their impetus
in the vain search for US and British approval (with
English singing)

Actually, it seems to hint at something else too:
melodic symphonic rock is where most people's
tastes lie? Is that true?

The entire Italian scene has taken me by the scruff of the neck ... there are so many great bands that were just names on GEPR but have come alive thanks to PA

1) PFM
2) LDF
3) Corte Dei Miracoli
4) Celeste
5) New Trolls

are just five, but I think I'm on course to be heavily into a few others ...

elsewhere

Beggar's Opera
Circus
Comus
Cressida
Discipline
Harmonium
Neuschwanstein
Pollen
Trespass
Triana

PA!

I used to use the GEPR too, but it was very disorganized.  The policy was that any band who covered a prog song, released only one prog song, or works out of a garage and doesn't release studio albums could be included.  I like Prog Archives way better!

Bands I didn't know before checking out this site :

  • Discipline
  • Riverside
  • FM
  • Circus

these are just the bands which were worthwhile checking out. I suppose there're others but can't remind them at this moment. I also discovered a lot of albums from artists who were familiar to me from other albums.  Before I joined this site I thought I knew a lot 'bout this kind of music, boy was I wrong. Thank you PA

Four names that come to mind quickly, all good surprises to me:

Anglagard
Circus
Deus ex Machina
Porcupine Tree

This excellent site has been very helpful in broadening my
musical horizons... and in depleting my wallet

And the idea of having MP3 files to sample the music is certainly a VERY
good idea --- reviews, as good as they may be (and they usually are very
good 'round here ), will never replace having a taste of the music.

Kudos to the people that bring us PA!

Tony, I have to wonder about having such a large list with only 5 days in the forum !

Well, you might have got in some weeks before starting posting but still .... very impressive !

I found this site a few month ago and the more I got in the more I liked it. I think that downloading an mp3 is not an answear to your question so I'll mention only 3 that I actually purchased after reading of and listening to on PA.

1. the soft machine

2. gentle giant

3. the nice

4. caravan

I must also say that I realised I must get into itallian prog and start with PFM after reading so many of you on that issue.
