I was reasonably well versed before I chanced upon the Archives thanks to the (much clunkier) GEPR, but the Archives has been really useful to me, especially with regards to picking which Italian albums/bands to look into.

Ahh yes, Italian Prog is a recently new experience for me, but what a beautiful one it has been.  Over the last month I've picked up about 20-25 italian prog CD's thanks to this site, wow, these bands are FANTASTIC.  So symphonic, with a more acoustic, and beautiful edge than their rockier english cousins.  And lots of great FLUTE (i am a flutist, so I love it).  Italain prog is simply amazing.    Especially PFM, Quella Vecchia Locanda and Banco!

When I found the site, I was pretty much a huge fan of all the "popular" prog bands, i.e. Floyd, Yes, Genesis, Rush, ELP, plus some DT.

It wasn't until coming here, though, that I discovered there is a lot more to the genre than the aforementioned bands and I have a new favorite band to show for it -- Gentle Giant.

Other bands I have discovered and enjoy:

-Porcupine Tree (only have In Absentia so far but I love it)
-Opeth (now have Blackwater Park, Still Life & Damnation)
-Pain of Salvation (just have The Perfect Element so far)
-Camel (just have Snow Goose and a few MP3's)
-Caravan (just have some MP3's so far: Nine Feet Underground, Golf Girl, Land Of Grey And Pink)
-I was a fan of Crimson's Red & ITCHYCOCK before, but I have since discovered Larks' Tongues, Starless And Bible Black, & some of Discipline & Thrak
-The Mars Volta (have Frances & Deloused)

Thank you prog archives.

Hard question T-man.

1. Echolyn (My favorite band... bar none.)
2. IZZ (Prog/pop perfection)
3. Salem Hill (Power, melody, lyrically strong... the complete package.)
4.  Relayer (Queen meets Yes)
5. Shaun Guerin (Thanks Lucas, this guy was great...RIP)
6. Thieves Kitchen (Great modern prog)
7. Lands End (Another great "whole package" band)
8. Riverside (New guys with promise)
9. Porcupine Tree (They are slippin', but i still dig 'em)
10. K2 (Hero worship on my part and I'm not ashamed to admit it.)

Not to mention all the great music from Dick Heath, Diddy, Garion, GDUB, Peter, Reed (RIP) and dude. As they say in Michigan, "You'se guys rock! "

Besides English symphonic and some canterbury, Italian is where its at.  These are AMAZING bands.  Lots of acoustic instrumentation, georgous melodies, coupled with Italian which is a beautiful language.  Over the last month PFm has skyrocketed into my top 10 very quickly.

Tony:

Excellent question and good thread.  Despite my "integral" involvement in PA for the past (could it be?) year-and-a-half, there were many bands I had not heard of prior to joining.  Among those which I ended up liking to one degree or another are:

After Crying
Alusa Fallax
Anglagard
Archive
Arena
Ark
Aufklarung
Balletto di Bronzo
Banco del Mutuo Soccorso
Carpe Diem
Carptree
Cervello
Citizen Cain
Clepsydra
Cliffhanger
Collage
Comus
Echolyn
Galleon
HorizonT
IQ
Locanda Della Fate
Mezquita
Mongol
Museo Rosenbach
Opeth
Pendragon
Quella Vechia Locanda
Tangent

To these I add groups that I had heard about, but never actually heard until I joined PA:

Camel
Caravan
Can
Deus ex Machina
Dream Theater
Focus
Gong
Gryphon
Hatfield and the North
Mars Volta
National Health
PFM
Spock's Beard
Tangerine Dream
VDGG

Quite a list!  I can safely say that PA has been a truly educational and instructive experience for me!

Peace.

Actually I was pretty well versed in prog when I got here also.  But the only ones right now that I can think of that I learned from here are:

  • French TV
  • Frogg Cafe
  • Rocket Scientists
  • Farpoint
  • Glass Hammer
  • Enchant

I'm sure there are others..

Pretty much anything beyond KC/DT/Rush/Marillion/Pain of Salvation/Mostly Autumn/Floyd/a few others. Sure, I'd heard of Genesis and Yes and ELP, but I'd never listened to them. I couldn't list my favourites, but the Soft Machine'd be up there.

Harmonium

Shub Niggurath

Aka Moon

National Health

...to name just a few (although the only one of these four I hadn't heard of earlier is Harmonium, the rest I've heard good things about, but it's only thanks to PA that I got the chance to check them out)

Really interesting this thread -
seems like the vast majority of people making a
thorough investigation of the site have never heard
Italian Symphonic Prog of the 70s before, me
included.
before coming to the site I had no idea of the
existence of bands like PFM, Banco and Quella
Vecchia Locanda and even if I had heard of them I
probably would have dismissed them out of hand as
bad europop, prog-lite.
I realise this is narrow-minded but I would have
been judging them on past exeperiences of
continental pop music (most of it's rubbish).
I think it proves two things:
1. The value of MP3 downloads (illegal or not). I was
able to dip a toe in the Italian water, liked what I
found and after immersing myself for a while and
confirming my appreciation for the the music went
out and bought a load of it. Thus I didn't do anythign
harmful to the artists except sample their wares and
then bolster their incomes and...
2. Imagine what could have happened with these
bands in the 70s if more people like us had had
access to their records. How big could they have
become? A crying shame and mostly because most
of us can't stand listening to lyrics in a language
other than English. Shame! If we had embraced it a
little more maybe we would have got an absolutely
phenomenal third album from Quella Vecchia.
maybe PFM wouldn't have fragmented their impetus
in the vain search for US and British approval (with
English singing)

Actually, it seems to hint at something else too:
melodic symphonic rock is where most people's
tastes lie? Is that true?

Pollen
Trespass

I used to use the GEPR too, but it was very disorganized.  The policy was that any band who covered a prog song, released only one prog song, or works out of a garage and doesn't release studio albums could be included.  I like Prog Archives way better!

these are just the bands which were worthwhile checking out. I suppose there're others but can't remind them at this moment. Four names that come to mind quickly, all good surprises to me:

Anglagard
Circus
Deus ex Machina
Porcupine Tree

This excellent site has been very helpful in broadening my
musical horizons... and in depleting my wallet

And the idea of having MP3 files to sample the music is certainly a VERY
good idea --- reviews, as good as they may be (and they usually are very
good 'round here ), will never replace having a taste of the music.

Kudos to the people that bring us PA!

Tony, I have to wonder about having such a large list with only 5 days in the forum !

Well, you might have got in some weeks before starting posting but still .... very impressive !

I found this site a few month ago and the more I got in the more I liked it. I think that downloading an mp3 is not an answear to your question so I'll mention only 3 that I actually purchased after reading of and listening to on PA.

1. the soft machine

2. gentle giant

3. the nice

4. caravan

I must also say that I realised I must get into itallian prog and start with PFM after reading so many of you on that issue.

This site introduced me to

TMV, Porcupine Tree, the strawbs, GYBE, Camel, Caravan, Anglagard, Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso, and many MANY other bands, it really opened my eyes to what the genre "prog" really was.
