Saw them perform in their home town last night where they played a couple of tracks off the new album. Seems to me like their style is continuing to evolve but they are not yet full blown prog. Not that it matters overly as they were in damn fine form and did a fantastic set.

What matters with Muse is how they manage to combine many music genres into one. Good thing they can't be classified in only one category IMO. Still, I hope they stop doing starlighted tracks and continue to expand their progressive vein...pretty much what everyone on this site hopes for.

Their new album is EASILY their best and most progressive. I was absolutely blown away! Never was the world's biggest Muse fan, but they're way up on my levels of appreciation now.

The recent interview with a Finnish rock mag Soundi delved into this Muse & Prog question. Basically they know nothing about prog (they were asked about Selling England, two of them didn't know the album except one of them by name, the third had bought it for his mom as a gift) and don't view themselves as a prog band, but "if prog means bands who test their limits and try new stuff, then why not. If that's how it is, then I'm happy to be in a prog band" and "while making music we aim for maximum content and depth. I like to think there's lots of everything in our music and that you can't figure it all out on one listen. You can listen to our records like records were listened to in the 70s".

It's probably their most progressive, but I thought it was pretty bad. Their knack for great melodies is missing almost entirely. I just hear a completely overblown sound mass. I'm going to let it rest and listen again next week but I was so unimpressed with it that I couldn't get passed the first movement of that "symphony." I don't know how I made it that far, really.

Weird how people see it differently. I've noticed that it's really splitting Muse fans down the line though. My favorite album before this new one was Black Holes, but I still thought they had plenty of room to improve on their sound. This album was exactly a step in the right direction, in my opinion. I just heard the album for the first time yesterday and I'm on my 6th listen.

Yep. Well, I got into Muse years ago because I loved their dynamic balance of alternative rock, pop, classical, queen-esque harmonies and such. But I think they lost control here and the bombastic side of the band took over. There isn't a whole lot of melody, and there isn't a whole lot of soul (at least I'm not hearing any). Glad that you're getting into it. Maybe you should go back and take a look at their album Origin of Symmetry sometime, too. Sometimes when I finally get into a band I can go to their past work and get more out of it then.

We like Muse for different reasons then, haha. I like their earlier stuff too, it's just not on the same level to me. I really love the bombastic sound of the Resistance and I was extremely pleasantly surprised with how solid each one of the tracks was. Origin of Symmetry is a decent album, maybe I'll listen to that tonight. Contrary to how you're feeling, I used to think their earlier albums were missing the soul from a few tracks (hence some inconsistency), but I found that the Resistance is oozing out soulful songwriting.

^Ah yes, I guess we are opposites here. Like I said, I'm going to give it another go in a week or so and see how I feel then.

Differences in taste, w00t. That sounds like a good plan. It seems like you're feeling very similarly to how I felt about The Mars Volta's new album. It's still my least favorite, but I gave it some time to sink and I like it more than I used to.

Octahedron is definitely my least favorite, but I liked it the first time around and it did a little growing. The compositions on The Resistance are definitely competant and stuff so maybe I need to adjust to the sound. We'll see. Usually, if an album is to be a favorite of mine, I'll like parts of an album the first time around and then it'll grow some after that. I can't remember a single thing I heard from The Resistance except the first track because I hear it on the radio at work every day.

I agree. The music is good to listen to and interesting, but a bit contrived. The lyrics often suck and I retain the comparison to Green Day's American Idiot is valid, but made only worse by this album coming 5 years after that one. Shameful. Still, Muse's best.

Woohaa, I'm sold. Never been a fan of Muse, I've liked them in small portions once in a while, but now that I'm testing the new album from Spotify, I'm stunned. Guiding Light is the only song so far (only the Symphony to go) that has n't been pretty damn great. Wonderful melodies throughout, interesting arrangements, clever guitar solos, all the stuff. Brilliant.

It grows on you, don't worry. I've had parts of the album stuck in my head all day. It's damn brilliant.

Listened to the album twice today and I've got to say, I'm quite disappointed in them. They seem to have lost that edge to their sound that I loved on OoS and Absolution. Everything up to and including Guiding Light doesnt do much for me, after that it picks up quite nicely but the damage is done. I think they needed more bombast this time.

I think "The Resistance" is their best album yet apart from Absolution, when you think how far they have come since Showbiz.(never liked that first album, rather messy) - i found the album the easiest to get used to and enjoyed the "Symphonic" section very much, but the novelty of the Queen impressions, though very convincing, will grate every time i hear it .. .

I haven't been listening their previous albums, nor the new one. But can I ask a question, is it possible to spoil anything what could I found good in them by listening their new one ? Everyone is saying, how their new is their best work to date. So can The Resistance overshadow "Showbiz" and others ? Is it better first listen these and finally, their newest ? just asking.
