humm... going back to the beggining...

i voted for DT, just because in late dates they have been creating an "unplayable" series of songs, that goes to darn fast and to darn complicated, playing almost every known note (techniclly)... but, mahavishnu orchestra, return to forver... WOW, and please no one has ever mention Terry Bozzio and the lonely bears... these guys really makes you feel like a monkey with a stick... but i think you are choosing "recording artists" and well, DT is a good option... whatever

peace

ApproveAgreed, obviously. Hackett, Howe Holdsworth and Hillage (yes, the four "H"-men of the Apocalypso, again!) all owe an obvious debt of inspiration to him!

And Danny was a MONSTER bassist, as well! He had chops on his chops ! (Gravy, too...)Wacko

[/QUOTE]

Yeah, Danny was amazing. He layed down those funky bass grooves without ever moving a finger. Now that's TALENT. How about Chris Partridge. He blows Drummer Mike Portnoy outta the water.

Check this out: Keith Partridge Signature Strat.

Why is Mahavishnu in that list? I would've voted for them as most technical, but they're considered really to be Jazz fusion. Then I voted for Rush, obviously.

It's the same guy. Great minds think alike.

while it would be fair to say that, for example,Rush were technically more proficient than the Sex Pistols, within prog itself it would be difficult to say who was the most "Technically Brilliant".Many bands use odd time signitures unusual rythm changes, interesting syncopation etc..so as someone who has had musical training myself,i really could not answer this question except to say that most of the progrock bands i know "have thier moments"

Of course, I put Return to forever at the same technical level that the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Their "romantic warrior" is awesome...jazz/ fusion at its best

Of old bands Emerson,Lake and Palmer 'walk it' easily. How they are excluded from this poll is astounding to me! (get 'Pictures At An Exhibition' for reference)

New bands -Par Lindh Project are awesome (also conspicious by their absence in the poll)

And no Flower Kings/Spock's Beard/Transatlantic either???

(I wish people wouldn't start a poll when they havn't a clue about the subject matter. There have been a few too many of these on the forum already)

Whoa the horses here! First of all I honestly overlooked ELP they are one of my all time faves. I'm also familiar with these other bands you have mentioned although Spock's Beard really doesn't turn my crank. As I mentioned at the top I invited people to mention any other bands/albums that they felt like. But as it has been mentioned I think that the omission of Danny Partridge was my biggest oversight when creating this poll.

BTW, I just voted for Rush. Dream Theater is very Technical, but not "BRILLIANT." Besides, I was holding out for the Danny Partridge acknowledgment. Right ON, Peter!!!

Uh, I must really be missing something for Rush to be leading these polls.  I have two of their albums, "2112" and "Moving Pictures" but these are obviously not the same ones the rest of you guys are listening to!

Please, someone enlighten me as to which of their albums I should go buy in order to "see the light" as to their unsurpassed technical brilliance.  Funnier things have happened in my life, so I'm open to believing...
