This is true only because The Clash didn't release another dozen songs of that length.

Well, Yes, KC, Frank Zappa, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin,Metallica deserve far better company than Oasis, Justin Timberlake, Blur and Green Day.
But from this magazine hard to expect a better list.

Misread the thread title, so was going to suggest Goin' Home from Aftermath - but just realised the thread title was singular Rolling Stone, not plural Rolling Stones....

Actually, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea was a widely renowned album. It even received acclaim from many mainstream critics. That surprised me, but while I may not have thought of it as soon as I saw the category, after seeing it I wasn't so surprised.
However, it was definitely more surprising than the overall quality (or lack thereof) of the list. Edited by Moatilliatta - December 06 2007 at 13:13 |

I'll allow myself to be a little sharp and say that the Rolling Stone is for people who think that know something about music, but actually don't know sh*t.

Actually, my post was meant to be more of a (joking) half-truth; quite a few of their editors (and readers) probably do frown on this type of music (prog). Anyways, I don't like the magazine either, but I don't believe it's a trend. Like it or not, the mag's been around for 40 years, and it has lasted this long because it continues to change with the times, and always tries to appeal to the teen/young adult age group. I can guarantee RS's core audience is NOT baby-boomers Edited by ClassicRocker - December 06 2007 at 21:43 |

I'm surprised nothing off of DT's Images and Words is on there, considering how they were actually somewhat known at the time. "Pull Me Under" would be an easy candidate without tarnishing RS's "popular" reputation. I'd rather put something from Awake on there, but there are only 2 songs over 7 minutes on there, neither of which are terribly outstanding.
Also, I'm really surprised nothing from Tool is on the list. A double-platinum album should be popular enough for any music reviewing company, and beyond that, just about everything on "Lateralus" is amazing (in my opinion, at least...). |

Diabolical Masquerade divided all its songs up into really small "movements", so they might get on there a few times =P I'm not much of one for black metal (at all), but they're pretty interesting. |

Yeah, but DT and Tool are so anti-RS, their popularity doesn't equal hipness |

40 years isn't timeless. Sure, they'll be around for a while, but the fact that they constantly try to appeal to the new generations is what makes it trendy and not timeless. Something that stays popular isn't necessarily timeless either, there is such a thing as mindless toothless following. When people look back they'll see a petty fickle magazine/website/etc. that has nothing about it that transcends it's era like the best music does. Timeless is something that is what it is and people can look back on it and it still has relevance to them. RS is not this because people who aren't mindless and toothless will see that the magazine changes to stay hip and don't care about what is really good. The Rolling Stone is the last place to look for information or anything connected with Prog Rock. And most of the groups you quote are not prog. They are considered prog related in these files ( which are not the prog bible anyway ) and prog related is another way of saying they are nor prog.
