I don't exactly yell it or make devil's horns, but I do inform them that my favorite band is Iron Maiden, because that's the truth. And I see no reason to lie about it.
Oh, and if they say "Who?", I prefer to explain and enlighten them rather than to rudely dismiss them. Edited by Time Signature - July 28 2007 at 09:46 |

If it's a hot girl I say "Whatever yours is" with a wink.
If it's anyone else, than I say My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy because they really speak to me . |

But I usually lie lately, because I was actually teased and 'bullied' by some of 'friends' for liking Harmonium, and other french/itialian bands.
Anonymous: Do you seriously like them? Shaxpere: Indeed I do. Anonymous: But you can't understand the lyrics! Shaxpere: Um...we're in French Immersion, you know. We've been speaking French since grade 1. Anonymous: So...you just listen to the beat in the background? Shaxpere: Anonymous: Well, okay, there's guitar and drums, whatever, it's lyrics that make the song. Shaxpere: (fury rising) don't you have instrumental songs on your iPod? Anonymous: Yes, but I don't listen to them, they're so boring! I started swearing after that. And my AC/DC disciple friend made fun of me for listen to "20 minute long songs that are the same thing over and over" and I made fun of him for listening to "5 minute songs that are the same thing over and over" and he took offense to it. |

Is it totally inconceivable to like both 20 minute songs and 5 minute songs? |

I voted the second option. Jaco Pastorius may not be that obscure - but I'll never deny him...

I usually tell the truth, even if people have no idea who Porcupine Tree is.

One time a teacher asked me what I listen to and I blankly stared at her and said in the most serious voice possible "Sweedish Death Metal" and walked away. She thought I was really weird for the rest of the year.
Normally I'll just say Porcupine Tree and say how they're a lesser known band who makes good music.

Normally I say King Crimson or Led Zeppelin, sometimes I say both, at least people know the second one, or I just said "a band you doesn't know"

I always say Pink Floyd and always have, no matter who I am talking to.
20 years ago most would write me off as a BOF and move on, but in recent years I've been impressed by the number of people who nod appreciatively and espouse an opinion of their favorite Floyd era - even Indie kids and die-hard metalheads seem to know and approve of at least one Floyd song.

I usually name King Crimson, Yes, Gentle Giant etc...
Because those are the most famous examples.

No one ever asks -- I think that's the sort of concern people have when younger: favourite this, favourite that.
If someone did ask, I'd have to honestly say that I don't really have a fave -- I like too much stuff, from too many genres, to pick just one.
Oh okay then -- WILCO!

"I like too much stuff, from too many genres"
true, since i got into prog my musical taste has expanded significantly - i got into many genres i haven't heard before. each of them has their own uniqueness and not all are comparable. as for the question i'd probably say 'Dream Theater', as they're the most famous among my favourites. if i say another name, most people probably wouldn't know |

1 Chronicles 13:7-9
Then David and all Israel played music before God with all their might, with singing, on harps, on stringed instruments, on tambourines, on cymbals, and with trumpets. |
