I ask this for fun and to kill time, but also because I'm aware it's easy to kill conversations this way - when some Deerhoof-t-shirt-wearing indie kid asks me who my favourite band is, I say King Crimson - it's not true, but I do like them very much and said indie kid stands a better chance of having heard of them, whereas if I said Present that might conclude the conversation with an "er, oh." Do you see what I mean?
perhaps you're prepared to extoll the virtues of a truly overlooked band to anyone who asks? Me, I compromise. ;P

There CAN be cases when your favorite band is somewhat famous, like in my case... So, even though most people have not heard of Dream Theater, some at least have heard of them because a friend who plays guitar or is a musician says they're wonderful.... I've met a few people that knew of the NAME Dream Theater in that way.... But, anyway, I always say it.
When people start asking "what are your other favorite bands" that's when things get complicated: The Flower Kings, though famous for us proggers, are just as unknown for the common person as Bacamarte. And when I say Genesis, I QUICKLY clarify: "the 70's Genesis, not the one you've heard with Invisible Touch"...

I instantly fall into a shock-like state when I realize that the person
in question will always remember me as someone whose favourite band is
[...], so having carefully pondered for a while whether I should answer
"King Crimson", "Tangerine Dream" or "The Smiths", I end up mumbling
something inaudible with a paralyzed expression on my face.

Thankfully, my favourite band is Metallica
But I enjoy talking to people about the prog music I listen to, especially if they seem to be half interested... though I won't be naming too obscure bands, maybe just scratching the surface, telling them a bit about KC, Genesis, Yes, DT, Opeth and the more fcommercially succesful bands I know.

I've been there many times..
These days I kick off by saying "I like Genesis. That's everything they did between 1970 and 1980. I should point out I do NOT like Invisible Touch"
You can see the grin forming on their lips the moment you say Genesis.

you waffle over the fact that you have no favourite band etc.
And then I let them know I like esoteric music by bands that they have probably never heard of. Then I name some and they agree with me that they have not heard of them.
Occasionally they know of them and then the conversation goes on in earnest.

I SHOULD answer "truthfully...famous," because almost everyone seems to have heard of Tull, if not heard them.
But I'm gonna answer the Dio one. 'Cause that's the most metal answer. And I do often invoke Satan hands when talking about the Tull.

But I usually lie lately, because I was actually teased and 'bullied' by some of 'friends' for liking Harmonium, and other french/itialian bands.
Anonymous: Do you seriously like them? Shaxpere: Indeed I do. Anonymous: But you can't understand the lyrics! Shaxpere: Um...we're in French Immersion, you know. We've been speaking French since grade 1. Anonymous: So...you just listen to the beat in the background? Shaxpere: Anonymous: Well, okay, there's guitar and drums, whatever, it's lyrics that make the song. Shaxpere: (fury rising) don't you have instrumental songs on your iPod? Anonymous: Yes, but I don't listen to them, they're so boring!
I started swearing after that. And my AC/DC disciple friend made fun of me for listen to "20 minute long songs that are the same thing over and over" and I made fun of him for listening to "5 minute songs that are the same thing over and over" and he took offense to it.

No one ever asks -- I think that's the sort of concern people have when younger: favourite this, favourite that.
If someone did ask, I'd have to honestly say that I don't really have a fave -- I like too much stuff, from too many genres, to pick just one.
Oh okay then -- WILCO!

true, since i got into prog my musical taste has expanded significantly - i got into many genres i haven't heard before. each of them has their own uniqueness and not all are comparable.
as for the question i'd probably say 'Dream Theater', as they're the most famous among my favourites. if i say another name, most people probably wouldn't know

Why not answer truthfully? If someone asks you who your favorite band is, odds are they'd like to know. Maybe you'll turn them on to something new they they never would have heard about otherwise. You can always explain with a single sentence so that the other person doesn't feel stupid. ("They're this really cool progressive band from Italy!") I generally don't like to patronize people because I wouldn't want others to do it to me. Fortunately, I don't have this problem because my favorite band is Queen.

I say I dont have a favorite band because I dont, although I dont 'waffle' over the fact. I like all kinds of music although prog is my favorite style. But Im not embarrased in my taste of music if thats what you are getting at. I can talk about any genre of music as long as the music is heartfelt and honest I can respect it.
If I Had to come up with something, I would say that Im into older early 70's bands like Genesis and Yes, but if that persons a classical or punk or country enthusiast I can have an adult conversation about it and I dont put myself on a pedistal because Im into 'arty' music and I DO NOT think that prog music lovers are more intelligent or above any other kind of serious music lover.

The question of this poll wasn't exactly "Who is your favourite band" it was "How do you answer the question?"
EDIT: Also, be careful about naming those bands around here, you may get some nasty retorts.

You should read my post more thoroughly. Or maybe I'm not making sense or something. In any case, I would answer truthfully.
And I can't help it if other people are close-minded and have problems.

I usually say Frank Zappa which is true enough and most people know who he is....although I almost get the response "Oh, cool...I've never listened to any of his music."

Woops, I forgot to add a little emoticon at the end of that sentence.

There's not much point in answering this question - if whoever's asking it hasn't heard of KC or Gentle Giant or the Olivia Tremor Control or anyone else I might name then from their point of view I may as well be making up names.
So I'd probably answer something like "Well, I really like..." Flaming Lips/Muse/Radiohead/The Arcade Fire/some other relatively well-known band.

Am I the only one that finds liking obscure bands sexy?

I answer truthfully, but mention more than one. _"Before Phil Collins is the singer, Genesis" _"Led Zeppelin + Pink Floyd" (easy one) _"Opeth" (many haven't heard of them, I just tell them it's complex metal music) _"The Flower Kings" (gets me the most looks)
