Personally I prefer Muse over Radiohead by quite a large margin. I wouldn't mind seeing Muse on here really, I've always thought of them on the fringes of prog rock. |

The Mars Volta are already in, bub. And rightfully so, I might add.
I think that Muse's Space Dimentia and Micro Cuts are definitely prog rock pieces, for it's a certain combination between classical music and rock, in this case, alternative rock. But those are pretty much the only songs that really do fall into this category. Unlike Radiohead, Muse are usually more straight foward musically (and lyrically, but that's irrelevant, I suppose). Either way, they have really shifted away from this direction with the poppish 'Absolution' album, which aside for a misplaced quote by rahmaminov in the middle of a song, doesn't have any real classical influence in the composition. Stocholm Syndrome, though, is totally a prog-metal song! Anyway, Doves and Elbow, totally NOT prog. not by a long shot. |

They are too mucxh on UK's MTV2... Too obscure... They don't strike out as Radihead did, and no album of theirs makes you think about the fabled condition humaine, like OKC and Kid A do

Even they are much closer to prog music than radiohead i don't agree to
add them because they represent the todays music and the todays music
sucks. All these new bands recycle the old ones. I know that you will
call me closeminded but i dont care this is only my opinion i may be
wrong!

i dont see why ppl compare radiohead and muse so tightly. i prefer radiohead tho muse are incredible and i mean truely incredible. muse started off as radiohead clones with showbiz but took their own unique direction, they have their similarities but are ultimately completely different bands. yet everyone seems to lump them together.

Probably because of the occasional uncanny similarities between Thom's voice and Matt's voice |

The popularity of a band does not denote the progressive-ness of their music. Muse are much closer to prog-rock than Radiohead

Why? They are radio-friendly, and they sell out like hell and all the teenyboppers in Britain loooove them. Period.

Muse's music mixes classical and rock influences and weird song structures, and it features great musicanship. Whether they are popular or not is irrelevant. By the archive definition they are prog. Radiohead, alternatively, are a progressive band, but not necessarily prog-rock. |

This discussion in this thread is the reason I don't consider this site to be about prog anymore.

So are Muse more or less prog than say IQ? I love both bands equally but I am very confused about what is considered to be prog or not.IQ have blatantly ripped off Genesis 'Suppers Ready' for their 'Harvest Of Souls'..so that's prog then.Muse are making original music with prog influences..so they are not prog then.Seems daft to me.Perhaps this site should just be for Pink Floyd, King Crimson, ELP,Yes and Gabriel era Genesis or clones of these bands.Nothing else is prog then (?!)

It isn't. I can listen to Tiem time and time again, and find that it has no progressive elements; it continues the same basic changing chords pattern throughout the song. It might be more interesting than 80's glamourrock, but hey, it ain't prog. They don't play interesting, innovating, evolving or complex enough parts to do that. |
