It's overated, but I love it. Probably the Genesis song I listen to the most.

True - however, considering that some bands make concept albums, where all of the songs have an overarching theme (or one song takes up the entire album), the fact that this "epic" hung together only very loosely was disappointing.

"Everybody else is doing it" is not an excuse.

When I first heard it, it did seem a little disjointed, but I've learned that it really doesn't matter that much. Just try to listen to 2112!

I think it's a phenomenal piece, and one of my favorite Genesis tracks ever.

It's funny that I just noticed this thread because I just bought Foxtrot not an hour ago along with Brain Sald Surgery.  Not much time to listen to them though.

It seems to me to be the ORIGINAL blueprint for the 'seperate parts' epic, whereas (even though i has different sections) 'Close to the edge' is the the blueprint for the non segmented epic. Does that make any sense..probably not. Either way, I prefer the 'Seconds out' version by miles, since it sounds so much better and it does not sound like Phil is playing cardboard boxes and Peter is singing inside of them.

Wonderful song.

I happen to be addicted to this song recently and I know it's amazing, but I wouldn't call it underrated. It gets a good deal of respect and it earned every bit of it

Wonderful, rated just as it should be, generally.
It's important to think of Supper's Ready in the context of when it was released.
1972??? The fact that such a well-developed multi-part epic was released then is mind-boggling.
Yes, there were others released before or around the same time. But, to me, nothing from that period equals Supper's Ready, and honestly no 20+ minute epic ever created (IMO) has ever matched it.
And that's coming from guy who has a lot of love and respect for many different 20 min+ prog epics.

Hey now...'72, that's the Year of the Brick don't forget...

Er, how's it rated now? An insta-classic? It is pretty good.

it's good, and maybe even a classic, but far from being perfect or even the ultimate prog composition; hence generally overrated

it actually took me such a long time to get into it because everybody was raving about it like it was the best thing since sliced bread; it wasn't

I don't like it at all, I've never considered it a great song, and I like most of Genesis' albums (except the last ones)
