Cool!
Could you tell him I liked the bio he wrote for Vortex and in their sleeve of the reissue of their two albums? It was a great guide when I added them to PA.
Have a great time!

OK, just back from the festival and extremely tired - full write ups to follow over next couple of weeks. Martin filmed just about everything, we met up with Slipperman and co from Barcelona and also Royal Jelly, mingled with the great and the good of the avant prog scene and generally had a fantastic time, made all the better for meeting up with other forum members. Sean Trane unfortunately couldn't make it for this one - if you read this Hugues, we all missed you!
The event seems to have been a success and there's already talk of another one maybe next year. There was a lot of other interesting gossip, but more of that later...

Chris, Martin,
My heart is definitely damaged for having missed this. The only thing that soothed it, is that I finally got to see VdGG in concert, last sunday. They were amazing too, even if Jaxon's sax was missing to all of us, but the trio was so stellar that by half the concert, it could seemed that VdGG's music could easily have been without it.
Magnificent gig, but it only mended partly the loss of not meeting you guys there.
Problems with the girlfriend's house is solved, going to the judge this afternoon. The car problems turned out not as expensive as originally thought. Not the head gasket, but the water pump was shot.

coming down slowly.........after great concerts, a great athmosphere, having shared all this with Chris, Flora, Royal Jelly, Slipperman & friends, bad weather & having had breakfast with John Greaves, Chris Cutler, Aymeric Leroy, Steve Feigenbaum, Bob Drake, Jean Herve Peron, Dave Kerman all at the same table it's just hard to get back to the grindstone.... looking forward to next year and to see some more of you there.
PS Hugues we missed you
PS2 wait for some upcoming clips of the festival on 'You Tube' (will take some time so)
PS3 Assaf , finally we didn't made it to 'L'auberge Du Sanglier, but we get some great stories from people having lived that period! Edited by Alucard - April 17 2007 at 08:20 |

Looking forward to reading your stories and seeing your videos.

Oh wow, this sounded amazing!
Let's hope they repeat this next year, so more of us can meet up and meet some of our heros (both PA and RIO related) and see some of the most amazing and challenging bands in the world. I'm presuming Steve Feigenbaum doesn't deal with Wayside orders himself, 'cause my order from them arrived Monday morning. |

after three days of incredible and outstanding music in the mountains of France, i can only say that this has been one of the best events i´ve ever attended. I wish next year there´s another chance to enjoy superb musicians from old and young generations to make us all enjoy the dark side of music.
otherwise, still waiting for martin and chris review

The RIO Festival Report - France, April 2007
Time: Friday-Sunday, April 13-15 2007.
Location: Cap'Découverte, Carmaux, France. Bands: Magma (fr), Present (fr), Faust (de), Guapo (uk), Zao (fr), Mats Morgan Band (sw), Nebelnest (fr), Salle Gaveau (jp), Peter Blegvad Trio (uk). Summary: great festival, especially if you're French. Best Shows: 1) Guapo; 2) Magma; 3) Salle Gaveau. Worst Shows: 1) Peter Blegvad Trio; 2) Faust; 3) Zao. Production & Organization: 9/10 Greatest Moments: 1) Roger Trigaux of "Present" breaking an electric guitar on stage at the end of the show, and throwing the broken instrument on an innocent keyboard; 2) Christian Vander ending the festival with a small balade, sung by himself; 3) Mats Morgan band members jumping up & down on the stage; Worst Moments: 1) Peter Blegvad getting confused on which song he's going to sing next; 2) Zao pianist Francois Cahen telling the audience that their lead female singer has been hospitalized; 3) Faust's frontman Jean-Hervé Peron running with a handsaw through the terrified audience. Performance one-liner descriptions: Magma filled the hall and proved it was the king of the French prog scene, even today. Present chose to give 2 gigs, one acoustic with 2 pianos, one electric with a full band - both not their career peaks. Faust cared more about the opposition than the rock music itself. Guapo shocked the crowd with a powerful show, using high-volume and climax-building to great effect. Zao's lead singer couldn't show up, so their gig was one of their all-time worst. Mats Morgan band displayed a great sense of humor, happy melodies and excellent group cohesion. Nebelnest were fierce (drummer taking off his shirt on the 2nd piece), but couldn't go beyond their recorded output. Salle Gaveau came out of nowhere to suprise the French crowd with a very polished, elegant and lively ensemble playing. Peter Blegvad Trio were'nt RIO at all, and therefore should not have been invited to the festival. See you next year? Only if great names will show up. Suggestions for RIO-FEST 2008: 1) Eskaton; 2) Art Bears; 3) Thinking Plague; 4) Koenji Hyakkei; 5) Happy Family; 6) Universal Totem Orchestra; 7) Sleepytime Gorilla Museum; 8) Samla Mammas Manna; 9) Birdsongs of the Mesozoic; 10) Far Corner; 11) Univers Zero. Compliments: The Rocktime Association for a great event; The festival staff for a professional workout; Asaf Carmeli & Erez Sayag for the wise comments; Pedro from Portugal and Sergio from USA for the international angle; Udi Koomran for the inside stories; Steve Feigenbaum from Cunieform Records for the passionate debate; Jennifer Edmondson for the taxi sharing; Didier Laloup for the fine hospitality in the park inn. Salut Uri,
dommage that you didn't liked Peter Blegvad (who played as you surely Know with 'Faust', 'Slap 'Happy, was one of the fathers of 'Kew Rhône' and has IMO enough credits to be on the list of a RIO festival, even so the Blegvad Trio delivers mainly traditional songwriting. BTW His press conference was a highlight of RIO humour and wit and a masterpiece on it's own merit started by Chris hilarious questions!
PS I prefer to see Jean-Hervé Peron playing a chainsaw to Phil Collins singing.

brief reply to uri
First: i don´t think Roger Trigaux breaking the instruments was a great moment, but one of the saddest. As we all got very surprised when it happened and we even laughed for a while, after the concert we had a discussion with my mates and we reached this conclusion: Roger Trigaux broke his instruments because he was unable to play with the rest of the band, and he felt so angry by that that he exploded. When at the end of Promenade... all the band was doing the noisy improvisation, Roger Trigaux really wanted to play withthem and join the noisy sounds, and for sure the music was all clear in his mind, but he was too weak to play with them, and that was why he exploded in rage and anger, because he could not play. remeber taht after all the breakening, Roger Trigaux stood opposite the band and the audience, hiding his face with his hands. Shame? Sadness? Rage? I don´t know.
Second: Univers Zero was contacted to play for the festival, but they were not finallly invited because they were too expensive and because its playing was not worth for the festival (anyone take his own conclusion about this)
other things:
best shows: magma, present (acoustic), mats/morgan and salle gaveau
worst shows: Peter Blegvad Trio, nebelnest and guapo
the great question of the festival; because the great level of drummers, could you imagine a show with christian vander, dave kerman, morgan agren and chris cutler playing all together?

Hello Victor,
"i don´t think Roger Trigaux breaking the instruments was a great moment, but one of the saddest."
That's why it was a great moment - his rage was surprising and real.
Since both of us really don't why he did it, we can only assume his reasons. But it was a shock, and not a laugh.
"worst shows: Peter Blegvad Trio, nebelnest and guapo"
Me and two of my mates at the festival were *blown-out* by Guapo.
I really don't think it was one of the worst shows.
There is a general agreement about the fact that the Blegvad gig was aweful.
And about UZ - everyone knows that Daniel Denis is not a good friend of Trigaux. That's the main reason why there were not invited, I think.

Detailed reviews will appear in the live reviews forum, but here's my quick overview of the RIO festival: My musical highlights - Magma, Faust, Present (electric), Guapo, Salle Garveau Disappointments - Zao, Nebelnest, Mats Morgan I can't honestly say that I disliked any of the performances, and overall the standard was very high. I enjoyed Peter Blegvad's set, although I understand why some people felt it was out of place in this context, and Present's acoustic set was perhaps the boldest experiment of the weekend but for me it wasn't that successful. Memorable moments: John Greaves performing his wonderful setting of Dylan Thomas' "The Green Fuse" alone at the grand piano; Chris Cutler's drumming; Jean Herve Peron cutting the word 'Rien' into a piece of plasterboard before running amok in the audience with a chainsaw; Roger Trigaux's "Pete Townsend" moment; Dave Kerman shrieking 'did you hear what your mother said?'; Guapo wandering through the audience with gongs and melodicas; musicians staying in the same auberge as fans; Jean Herve Peron being the nicest chap you could meet (when he isn't brandishing a chainsaw). Cherry on the icing: meeting up with fellow RIO fans, especially Alucard (thanks for organising the taxi and generally being a splendid human being), Royal Jelly, Victor 77, Slipperman and the rest of the guys from Barcelona, all of whom made the whole thing pretty nearly perfect. See you next time guys, with any luck! Edited by Syzygy - April 19 2007 at 18:33 |

Eek, a chainsaw? Is that legal?
How did he manage not to hurt anyone? |

Remember kids, don't try this at home! Faust are professional abusers of power tools on stage (angle grinder and cement mixer were also featured) and are heavily insured. Probably.

Was the blade actually turning, 'cause I think when Eminem (or whoever else did it) did it, the engine was running, but the blade wasn't spinning.
I suspect Roger Trigaux destroying his equipment was more dangerous. |

I was on the far side of the hall, but I suspect you're right - Faust are very theatrical but I've spoken to Jean Herve on several occasions (including at the festival) and he doesn't strike me as the type to endanger his audience, even if the performance can seem traumatising.

ask my friend if the blade was spinning, he saw it through the corner of his eye when jhp´s arm got weak and nearly cut his hair! We all laugh now, but at the moment he was both angry and terrified!

-Some girls from a sport-class, moving their matrasses to the boys room when we came home from a concert
-having a chat with John Greaves about his up-coming record
-The prog conference à l'auberge including Jean-Hervé Peron declaring 'Hawkwind' officially as Krautrock!
-The hot dogs from 'Omelette Atomique'
