Once again, it's been confirmed there is no second disc...and as I stand before I delve heavily into making this album a musical project for myself (an in depth analysis)...my favorite cuts are Vicarious, Jambi, 10000, and LK-->Rosetta...otherwise the album DOES kind of fall flat rehash old Tool.

I think, in the end, the album is quite different from the others. It's more melodic and emotional for sure, more mellow it seems. Now when I have had the change to spin it a lot of times it is really starts stand out on it's own. The difference might not so obvious than with Undertow -> Aenima -> Lateralus, but it's there. I'm not disapointed at all, I really love (almost) every moment of it and I'm insanely happy that Tool was able to write another masterpiece (IMO).

Im not the type that sit and wait for a new album to come but this one seems very intresting im a preety new Tool fan and i got Aenima & Lateralus, and im realy looking forward for this one i have to say, will be very fun to see if they can beat Lateralus, i doubt it.

I bought the album today and am gobsmacked! Hey I know I'm a Tool fanboy etc,but this new effort is unf****nbeleavable! The boys have excelled with the sleeve design.I thought Lateralus was good but AJ,s art direction and Alex Greys artwork are truly outstanding.Wait till you peer thru the stereoscopic lenses for the first time,it will blow you away.Then we get to the music.I am a long time Tool fan and love their early work too.I have to say this will no doubt be my favourite.It combines the power of Aenima with the complexity of  Lateralus and introduces a more melodic vocal sound in places.DC's tribal rythming on "Right in Two" are simply gorgeous.The whole album just highlights why it takes these guys 5 years to make them. If you like Tool you will enjoy... but if you arn't buy it anyway because the sleeve is the best you'll see all year I bet! 5 stars for sure.

This sounds like a review Wink
 
Seriously, this album is out of this world, though for some reason many people are not impressed by it. I don't really mind the riffs that sound similar to the ones in the past. They aren't really similar, it's just the style of Adam using similar sounds in his guitar.
 
This is the Close to the Edge in the prog metal genre.
 
What if Tool manages to top this album in their next one? Would that even be possible?

Very few shops with it in stock locally -apparently 10000 days sold hald million units worldwide in the first week of sale, taking everybody by surprise - hence it may be 10 days before shops wil be able tol restock - and then not with the fancy cover.

I just want to give you some kudos as to writing perhaps one of the best level-headed reviews I've seen yet of the new Tool album.  I've been lurking, reading, finding it strange that most who have reviewed it are new users with no reviews under their belt.  (I personally don't review because I change my mind so damn frequently). 
 
And for all those bashing the album - that it's not 'new', it's 're-hashed' (disregard my initial first impressions of it, I'm over it) etc....do yourselves a favor and re-investigate the band's alleged 'leaps and bounds' over their 2-5 year lapses.   This band IN GENERAL doesn't change too much...I feel at least...they've been writing (with a few exceptions) in the key of D Minor for AGES!  There's only so many variations of that key!  Also it's pretty much the same core writing (Keenan, Jones, and Carey; disregarding Chancellor just because he wasn't involved originally).  The new album to me, is just another GREAT Tool album.  It opened up fully to me after six listens or so; I suggest the nay-sayers do the same?
 
Either way, to each his own.

That's the big problem I have.  Tool keep releasing the same formula ever 4-5 years with little to no variation.  They essentially left nothing to be desired after Undertow and Aenima.  Lateralus was just a refinement of these albums...lacking the guttural, gritty influence of the first two.  10,000 Days just sounds like a slowed down Lateralus.

I've played it about 10 times total and can only pick out maybe 3 songs that interest me...and even those take a back seat to songs such as 4 Degrees, Flood, Stinkfist, Eulogy, and 46&2.  Even the filler tracks on the early albums were better (compare Message to Harry Manback to Lipan Conjuring). 

Rosetta Stoned has stood out as the gem so far, but even it gets boring at times.  Like I said in my review, Tool seemed to take a notch out of the belt of Mars Volta for just extending a particular phrasing for a few extra minutes that does nothing more than increase the running time of the CD without having to actually vary anything.

I feel the same...except there's too much music out there to be all uppity and pissed off about the new Tool being 'redundant' or not.  Take it for what it is.  All bands eventually repeat themselves in some way shape or form I guess...  Regardless I'll be seeing Tool live in the upcoming weeks.

Thanks, I decided to put a little more time this time to make it worthwhile to read. I hope I won't have to change it all because my opinions could change. If I read my reviews, it looks like I don't honestly believe what I'm saying, so I understand what you mean.
 
I don't know what the critics want. They all shout that it was similar in style to LAteralus and complain about filler. As you said, tool has a "formula" that started early and was perfected in Salival's Push*t live version. The formula works, so they keep using it with great results. I don't understand about the filler part. If the critics complain about Vignitti Tree, the tribal chants and Lost Keys, they are only 3 while Aenima had many awful fillers, Lateralus had that Area 51 nonsense at the end, and Undertow had a song where 6+ minutes is silence. Some critics though say that there are only about "5" songs. What on earth is that?? That means that Vicarius, Jambi, The Pot, Rosetta Stone and Right on Two are probably the songs, leaving out songs like 10,000 days and Intension. Another thigns that surprising were the claims that this sounds like the music from Maynard's side project, and that Tool sold out. How can you sell out with 9/4 rhythms and a multipart 15+ minute long epic?
 
I am disappointed at the reaction of the album. It seems like many listen to the album once, don't like it and rant on the internet. I thought that this album would make a huge impact on the progressive rock/metal world by fans checking out King Crimson (MAynard considered them a big influence) and then trying other old prog bands. I thought that everyone was gonna go nuts over this, but I guess many don't care about artistic expression in music, they just want to listen to simple rockin' angst music in the vein of StinkFist.

Zitro I have just read your review.Thanks for the most positive review of this album I've read so far.I too was dissapointed that a lot of people dont seem to get this one.It is my favourite and Justin's bass playing is outstanding.Thumbs Up It was interesting to see Maynard and Danny on Oz tv over the weekend hosting a music video show.They're chosen video's were showcasing the guy,s biggest music influences.It was great to see King Crimson and Peter Gabriel amongst them.

You really think Justin's that good on it, huh?  While he does have some nice grooves, I swear everytime I listen to the album I hear/think something different.   Honestly though I think Adam's tones and overall sounds are the best I've heard come out of him.

Last time through I noticed a terrible problem with the bottom end on the album: it's terribly, terribly muddy and indistinct (when he's not doing those loopy delay-esque effects and whatever tone he has on the title track) tone-wise and perhaps Danny's kick drum makes matters even worse.  His normal no-effects tone actually reminds me quite a bit of Doug Pinnick's of King's X who absolutely does nothing for me.
