Why aren't these bands Prog? I believe those four bands match your description: synergy, combined talent, focus, etc. Maybe they don't sound like the older bands, but that is a good thing. They are all doing something creative and unique.
Prog isn't a sound either (regarding your first sentence); prog is more a state of being. Example: Tool may have a sound that fits comfortably into the modern alt-rock/metal scene, but they are clearly at a higher level of skill, composition, songwriting, etc., and there is no doubt that they are careful and focused. After all, they take four or five years to put out one record, because they make it perfect, to the slightest details.

To me it's clear: Mars Volta and Porcupine Tree are two really good and innovative prog bands. Radiohead is also very good and original, but their songs nerver go over 6 minutes. They don't give them the chance to explore enough, in my opinion. And I really don't like Tool, and I don't even consider them prog. I think they sound more like hard-rock alternative...

The only one of those four I'm not so keen on is Radiohead (although Amnesiac and Kid A are pretty good) and I'd describe all of them as progressive.
TMV are my curent favourites off that list.

Radiohead is pseudo-experimental brit-pop band,IMHO.They've done almost everything that Floyd did back in 1967(just using all that modern stuff & sound).TOOL is AWESOME PROG!!! Look at the way they're doing their misuc, you'll understand...I saw some reviews on Lateralus where the Magic Structure of the album had been described...quite prog trick

^mmm, still, even with all this "behind the scenes" talk about Tool, they still sound like an Alt/Metal type band to me. There's nothing wrong with that and I quite like them but they have never sounded as unquie to me as they do to some others. I also quite like TMV & Porcupine Tree but... If by some cruel freak these four bands were involved in a plane crash and only one could survive then I hope it would be Radiohead

What is "prog?"
Of those, I really enjoy "Lightbulb Sun," so PT (though I find most of their stuff too depressing/boring).
I find Tool and TMV very irritating/painful, and Radiohead haven't really grabbed me yet.
