That about sums it up for me. My first experience of Dream Theater and after listening to it, it's very difficult to get enthusiastic about listening to any more, although DT fans assure me they've done much better!

Perhaps there should have been a "It's mediocre" choice in the poll. You know, I think damning something with faint praise is worse than saying you loathe it - if you do, at least it stirred a reactionin you - which Octavarium didn't in me.

So, no vote from me!

I said i like it but its the sound of the band trying to move forwords as they dont wont to play the mega hevy metal of ToT again. There next album could be one of their best though but OV is the worst of the five studio albums i have of theirs.

I find the album to be a solid effort (mainly because the topic and lyrical
concept really grasped my attention.) At first I thought the album was
incredible but after a while it's most definitely less than that.

I would give 5 stars to the title track any day though. I hate how people say
it's an exact copy off other bands. It's similar at parts but no classic 70s
prog band would have wrote an epic like that. It's different, with a metal
edge to it.

I think it's OK... though it sounds like crap compared to Images & Words and Awake.

I would rate it 3.5/5

Yup.

I do hope they keep coming up with different albums, just as they do now... but if the only choice for them now is one between a new "Octavarium" and a new "ToT", then I'm ALL THE WAY for the latter. I don't hate "Octavarium", but IMO it's definitely their worst album (I haven't heard the debut, though).

Definitely one of their weakest albums. I like Sacrificed Sons and Octavarium the best.

Its one of their "medium" albums, but definitely not their best.

It would be around the 4.25 region.

Yup.

I don't think Train of Thought is dreadful at all, deceptive is the term i would use.  Different songs have different functions.  A song like As I Am or Honor Thy Father may not be anything great, but certain songs such as Stream of Conciusness or In the Name of God are works of art.  The album does not seem as progressive as it really is.  Most songs feature varying degrees of top class playing and emotion.  The album has an emotional theme to it unlike most Dream Theater albums.  Many criticize the album sayings it only has one atmosphere, but a band like Opeth only has the lone dark atmosphere, and i don't belive many think Opeth lacks emotion.

On Octavarium, i think it was a good but not their best effort.  It's a mix of the old and the new Dream Theater.  Rudess favored more of an analog tone to his synths unlike the other albums of his era.  The songs are less technical but more structured than Train of Thought.  I don't think this album is a step in the right or wrong direction, but a step in a different direction than most Dream Theater fans are used to.

I really like (not love) Octavarium. Its very diferent from their past works and ranges from great to not so good. 4/5. The concept draws you in, just like the first time I saw the 8 - 5 - 3 patterns in the booklet. Im looking forward for their next album. And the title track...AWESOME!
