Don't forget that Gates Of Delerium easily defines prog!!!! From
genesis I would say can-utility and the coastliners (everything that
makes genesis a great band, in a nutshell)

For me any track in 'Ciclos' by Los Canarios is what prog is about.

Hey, I was just thinking about this a few minutes ago. I would have to say Close to the Edge, but a lot of the famous epics would be good too (Echoes, 2112, Supper's Ready, and so on)

"Progressive.... yeah, that's it..."

Dimmu Borgir an excellent representation of the genre of prog? I like Dimmu to some extent, but I don't even think they're prog, nevermind an ideal representation of the whole genre!
I'd have to go with:
Starless
South Side of the Sky
Thick as a Brick
Supper's Ready
Arriving Somewhere But Not Here (for big newbies)
Pull Me Under (for metal fans)

- Must be classical influenced
- Must have drastic changes
- Must have virtuoso performances
- Must be Original
- Better if an epic.
So it's between:
- Supper's Ready
- Close to the Edge
- Karn Evil 9
- Hamburger Concerto
- All the Seats Were Ocuppied (666)
- In the Court of the Crimson King
But I could avoid N° 5. so my best choices are:
- The Musical Box
- Trilogy
- Starless

There is no one song that defines prog

Karn evil nine would probably be a good way to do it, having three
fairly distinct sections, solos for all three guys... and the length,
of course.

I think Supper Ready is the sum of all prog even though it does not have the moog in it
after that it would have to be Tarkus, or maybe even Echoes

Lost Chord has it- if you can define progressive music it is no longer progressive. Thankfully it is still progressing.

true... Prog is too diverse to be defined by one song OMO.
For example, Supper's Ready doesn't define RIO, while both are equally prog.

I agree Gates is it for me, from sound effects, acoustic parts, electric/synth parts, fast slow.
I suppose awaken is another one like this.
Karn Evil 9 is my other choice

Thats exactly what I meant, I mean we can't say that one Dream Theater
or Yes song can define a whole, wide-spread genre. If we did
that, then we would leave out all of the Canterbury, Zheul, Krautrock,
et al....genres. One song can not some up a diversified genre as
prog, like you said.

That's Igor Stravinsky's Rite of Spring or Firebird then.
Oh, btw, does it have to be "rock"..?
