Genesis - Firth of Fifth?
It has both electronic and acoustic instruments, quiet and loud passages, great singing (soft and more aggressive) and great instrumental playing, it's lyrical content is surrealistic, it showcases fabulous group interaction but also wonderful solos (Banks & Hackett), it's a stretched out song with different passages but with a unifying theme...
What do you think?

I would have liked saying it exactly the same way. That´s prog in it´s purest sense
Sadly, "Dark side of the moon" is now 2nd. overall because it has greater prog elements in "On the run" and "Us and them"

I'll go with "Firth of Fifth", but "Supper's Ready" has got it going on.
Then there's always "21st Century Schizoid Man", "On Reflection" or "Echoes"...

- Must be classical influenced
- Must have drastic changes
- Must have virtuoso performances
- Must be Original
- Better if an epic.
So it's between:
- Supper's Ready
- Close to the Edge
- Karn Evil 9
- Hamburger Concerto
- All the Seats Were Ocuppied (666)
- In the Court of the Crimson King
But I could avoid N° 5. so my best choices are:
- The Musical Box
- Trilogy
- Starless

Thats exactly what I meant, I mean we can't say that one Dream Theater
or Yes song can define a whole, wide-spread genre. If we did
that, then we would leave out all of the Canterbury, Zheul, Krautrock,
et al....genres. One song can not some up a diversified genre as
prog, like you said.

Can't give one song that defines prog (although if pushed CTTE might be
the nearest thing...). Can maybe give a song that is a good example of
prog.
On that basis I'd suggest something like: Heart of the Sunrise, Firth of Fifth, or maybe Starless.
Assuming the audience is not familiar with prog the suggestion of "Gates of Delirium" is a bit risky.....

Why not going back to the source and play "In The Court of The Crimson King" side one?
1) 21st Century Schizoid Man
Starts with weird whispered noise, then suddenly explodes in a mix of jazz, rock and pionnering electronic effects to finish in a delirium of sounds. Rythm changes are frequent and unexpected.
2) I talked to the Wind
From furor to accoustic gentleness, from distorted guitars and saxes to aerial flute and typical "prog" countertime drumming, merging into
3) Epitaph
Prototypical symphonico-mellotronic epic
That's all prog, for sure

To me, that smacks a bit of "prog-elite"! I think it's a great track but it is an acquired taste and I don't think it's particularly representative.
I also have memories of playing it in 6th form school common room and boy, did it bomb.

I agree to an extent...it seems a Medley or a series of extracts set up
as a suite would work better to convey the overall mindset of the
format. Something to allow for multiple songs within one...

The one song for me that would sum up prog really well is `Heart Of The Sunrise.' This is one track that is alternately gorgeous and frenetic. Yet within the frenzied parts, the musicianship is quite controlled. The soft passages of `Love comes to you' are anice contrast to the blazing guitar riff by Mr. Howe. And Bruford`s drums are controlled ,yet dynamic. As good as Alan White is,he has never been able to better Bruford`s playing on this track, especially with all the paradiddles Bruford undergoes. Squire`s bas splaying is exemplary , Wakeamn`s mellotron is ethereal and atmospheric, and this is one of Jon Anderson`s best vocal performaces. He`s very low key on the first few verses, and on the last verse, his vocal performance simply soars like clouds above the heavens.. Wonderful track. If someone were to ask me what prog is about, I wouldn`t say a word and point that person in the direction of listening to this.. |

This would get my vote too. I saw the Yes tribute band Fragile last night. The one piece that my hair stand on end was during a medley when they made the transition from "the fish" into Gates of Delirium including the "soon" passage. Despite playing the whole Close to the Edge album, it was Gates that was the all too brief highlight.
Superb show all round by the way. Two and a half hours of live Yes played by excellent musicians.

No Cert, Classical is a wide term, there's Clasical Baroque, Classical Romantic, Classical Modern, etc. You're confusing classical with Classic Period. When I say Classical I'm talking about Medieval/Gothic, Renaisance, Baroque, Classic Period, Romantic and Modern Classical.
BTW: Classical modern doesn't start in 1730, that's CLASSIC period, more exactly 1750 - 1830, in 1830 starts Romantic and Modern Classical starts in 1900 Aprox.
Where does that leave Gentle Giant?
Gentle Giant has influences that come from Medieval (The Trouvadore style of the vocals is very evident) plus Baroque and Classic (Not the same as classical) also uses some influence of Romantic and Modern complex structures.
BTW: Stravinsky is a great Prog' influence, his dramatic and unexpected variations are simply the closest Classical Music can get to Prog Rock.

And Mussorgski, Cui, Janacek, Borodin, Tchaikovsky, etc etc etc.

Yes-Yours Is No Disgrace
Chicago-Introduction
Genesis-Dancing With The Moonlit Knight
Whenever I listen to the above songs, the thought always crosses my mind as these sounding like prog. I mean, these songs just have 'the prog sound,' if you know what I mean. The time shifts, changes in key or instrumentation, varying phases, and virtuoso musicianship.

I know this is off topic, and as a newbie I'm not allowed to start a new thread, but I wonder if everyone here is aware of the current lawsuits springing up against Sony and their evil DRM copy protection software.
If you don't know what the hell I'm on about then I suggest you get clued up and look at some of these links - oh, and don't buy Sony products (and tell all your friends too!)
http://blogs.washingtonpost.com/securityfix/2005/11/the_bush _admini.html
http://www.sysinternals.com/blog/
http://www.eff.org/IP/DRM/Sony-BMG/?f=open-letter-2005-11-14 .html
There is plenty more information going around on the same subject. Just google for any combination of the words SONY, rootkit, russinovich, DRM, "First 4 Internet" etc.
If you have played any CDs on your home computer which have Sony's DRM copy protection on then, then your pc has been COMPROMISED. Virus writers are already frantically working to exploit the security holes that SONY have opened up. If your system is infected you might be able to get compensation from Sony if they are found guilty of any of the SIX class-action lawsuits currently filed against them.
I hope I have been of service to you in spreading the news about this corporate crime.

That is a hard question, would i choose for
- Echoes of Pink Floyd or
- Gates of Delirium by Yes or
- Mother Nature by Mostly Autumn or
- IQ, Pendragon, Marillion, Genesis, Mike Oldfield, FlowerKings, Magenta???
Or just choose for a recent single that conbines all those bands in one
great proggy epic of 13 minutes, screaming guitars, flute, ullian
pipes, organ, crazy bass loops, harp, slide, tempo changes and the most
amazing & delightful voices of the temporary prog;
- All Around The World: ProgAID ('05).

With:
Neal
Morse
Roine Stolt - The Flower Kings
Pete Trewavas - Marillion
