Why isn't Steven Wilson considered in this poll?...He gets my vote regardless...

NOTE: we're talking SONGS here people not epics/heavily orchestrated pieces of music.

@ original poster: in regards to Tool, MJK (Maynard James Keenan) writes all the lyrics.

I thought the greatest lyricswriter. That must be Fish.

Yup, I agree, for lyrics, Fish is my man. With Maynard James Keenan, the unmentioned Steve Wilson (tsk tsk), and Ian Anderson closely following.

Pete Sinfield, for as in depth as his lyrics can be (read about all the hidden meaning and imagery in his words, very layered), you really need a bong to fully get them.

my six-year-old brother writes better songs than "imagine". Lennon is not a good songwriter!!!

Thats like saying I draw better than Fontanas art just because he is a minimalist...its that poor mentality that is just distruction...never creation

This would be the "Imagine" regularly found at the top of "best song" polls (along with Bo Rap and Angels). Your brother must be very talented!

I hate everyone...You're all Prog-snobs!!

John Lennon was the greatest song wiriter....

followed closely by Paul, then Ian Anderson...

I can strangle a canary in a tin can and it would be really original, but that wouldn't save it from sounding like utter sh*t.

Either Pete Townsend or Ray Davies are my all time favorite songwriters. Peter Hammil or Ian Anderson, but i'll have to go with Anderson.

Dont tell me you guys fall for that BS about his lyrics being meaningless to such an extent that you don't see Jon Anderson as a good song writer......Jon is one of the main writers in YES!!!!!!!! You people have lost your mind!!
