IQ was the only prog band I saw in concert and that was doing an ABBA's cover.
Holmes and Nicholls even mimicking the 'back-to-back' way of singing of the Abba singers
it was during an encore .

Everyone seems to see this as metal, but I confidently say that it can be rock-metal hybrid, at best.
I see it as metal as it sounds like an 1980s power(plus some hair) metal band covering a pop song.

I'm very much into metal, and I know a pure metal song when I hear one. Malmsteen's pompous solos and some rhythmic parts carry "metallic" qualities, but the rest is outright rock in my book.
That's somewhat relative and depends on your age - or generation. I never wrote "pure metal" anyway. I was an obsessive metalhead in my early teens and softer stuff than this awful coverversion was labeled hair metal. The forefathers of modern metal: Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath were obviously considered to be metal back in the day, but I guess a young metalhead think of them as hard rock - maybe heavy rock.

^ Of course, it can be relative. There are some technical elements that make a song rock or metal. But, I generally think that the "edgy" metal vibe makes a song metal. Led Zeppelin never has that. Even when they are at their fastest, loudest. And their singer fortifies their rock character very much. But, Deep Purple's Perfect Strangers has those chorus riffs that are clearly "metallic". In Malmsteen's cover we are talking about, the vocals feel like rock. Some rhythms are also "rocky". But I concede that it can be said to be rock/metal, because of the guitar solos, some drum beats and guitar riffs -all of which sound rather "metallic"- and the sound. We may call it hard&heavy, maybe.

Lol at one of the comments under the Youtube video of Malmsteen's cover: "Yngwie is so fast I can't see him move at all" It made me laugh, considering Malmsteen's photo displayed there.

Yeah, but that's all quite subjective and doesn't really equal knowing your metal as such - which developed in the late 1960's and has its roots in blues and psych... whether you like it or not. If some teenager or a twentysometihng of the 2020's doesn't think it rocks hard enough to qualify it's still the original heavy metal - and not really for them/you to decide that it isn't.

^ Agreed. My criterion was not the "rocking or not" aspect; but, as I said before, the "edgy" metal feeling. Black Sabbath had a bit of it, Deep Purple had a touch of it, but Led Zeppelin never had it. Yet, Led Zeppelin ROCKS! Even extremely solidly rocks sometimes. But I feel no "metal" in their music. You may think differently, for sure.
