Virtually everybody who are even mildly into internationally popular songs must know ABBA's classic.

I really like Malmsteen's rock cover of the song too. So my love, oops vote, goes to the "Both are Great!" option.

I predict that this one will be a wipeout for Malmsteen, but I'm still curious if he could garner some votes.

This is another metal cover of the song, and a much better one IMHO.

I can't believe I voted for ABBA here LOL

Well I neither agree that Malmsteen's cover is "metal" (it has metal qualities, for sure though), nor that Sinergy's one is better than that.

Thumbs Up

Malmsteen plays neo-classical power metal or neo-classical metal. Or call it heavy metal, melodic heavy metal. But it's still metal.

You are not "wrong", but this cover is like The Final Countdown by Europe or Perfect Strangers by Deep Purple. They are rock/metal. Or rock songs with some metal vibes, I'd say.

I like ABBA, but that is not one of my preferred songs by the group. I still prefer it to the Malmsteen. As for the Sinergy, I feel it lacking in creativity. It's the synth/ keyboard lines that are most memorable to my from Gimme, Gimme, Gimme, and that is too similar from first listen and it seems a bit too generic to me in other ways (maybe I am off-base). Some covers are more original than others. "Gimme, Gimme, Gimme" is a cheesy song, and a good cover would somehow have to eliminate the cheese, make it über-cheesy, or turn it into a different kind of fromage for the homage for me, maybe.

While this is a different ABBA cover song, as a fan of Portishead I feel compelled to mention this cover of SOS:

Portishead's song adaptation was recorded for the soundtrack of one of my favourite films of the past decade, Ben Wheatley’s High-Rise film with Tom Hiddleston and Jeremy Irons, which is an adapatation of J.G. Ballard's novel.

^ Thanks, Ozgur. It was interesting checking out the Malmsteen cover, which is musically outside of my comfort zone.

I feel the same way too. It was interesting to hear a Heavy Metal cover version, but Gimme Gimme Gimme ABBA every day! Smile

I only managed about 45 seconds of Yngvie Malmsteen's ear-torture. Eagle is the ABBA-song with an obvious potential for metal anyway.

I'm not a Malmsteen fan. His music is not torture to my ears, but is generally bland. I like this cover quite much though.

I've just noticed that this cover is entitled: "Gimme! Gimme! Gimmie!". Lol.

Everyone seems to see this as metal, but I confidently say that it can be rock-metal hybrid, at best.

I see it as metal as it sounds like an 1980s power(plus some hair) metal band covering a pop song.

I'm very much into metal, and I know a pure metal song when I hear one. Malmsteen's pompous solos and some rhythmic parts carry "metallic" qualities, but the rest is outright rock in my book.

Well, this is even more rock. LOL Good cover though.

BTW, some bands do both rock and metal. Like Scorpions. Their Alien Nation is clearly metal, but most of their other songs are rather rock. I prefer to assess the songs, rather than bands. The metallic "edge" is something that many rock bands use, and vice versa.

Voted the original of course. BUT I would've voted both if Yngwie had had enough sense of humor to keep the original lyrics.

[guitar player talk] No wonder Yngwie covered this song, though. The main synth hook just screams sweep arpeggio! [/guitar player talk]

Still heavy metal IMO.
Andrew McDermott (later in Threshold and some other bands) sang in Sargant Fury. Excellent vocalist, passed away in 2011. Cry

^^ Sorry. I thought Cristi quoted Malmsteen's song. Deleted my "offensive post". Embarrassed

Yeah, it is heavy metal indeed. I was just being a bit mischievous there. Tongue

While not exactly a cover, Madonna did an excellent job at borrowing the main keyboard sequence from the classic Abba song and reinterpreted it on her song "Hung Up.

IQ was the only prog band I saw in concert and that was doing an ABBA's cover.
Holmes and Nicholls even mimicking the 'back-to-back' way of singing of the Abba singers
it was during an encore .

That's somewhat relative and depends on your age - or generation. I never wrote "pure metal" anyway. I was an obsessive metalhead in my early teens and softer stuff than this awful coverversion was labeled hair metal. The forefathers of modern metal: Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath were obviously considered to be metal back in the day, but I guess a young metalhead think of them as hard rock - maybe heavy rock.

^ Of course, it can be relative. There are some technical elements that make a song rock or metal. But, I generally think that the "edgy" metal vibe makes a song metal. Led Zeppelin never has that. Even when they are at their fastest, loudest. And their singer fortifies their rock character very much. But, Deep Purple's Perfect Strangers has those chorus riffs that are clearly "metallic". In Malmsteen's cover we are talking about, the vocals feel like rock. Some rhythms are also "rocky". But I concede that it can be said to be rock/metal, because of the guitar solos, some drum beats and guitar riffs -all of which sound rather "metallic"- and the sound. We may call it hard&heavy, maybe.

Lol at one of the comments under the Youtube video of Malmsteen's cover: "Yngwie is so fast I can't see him move at all" It made me laugh, considering Malmsteen's photo displayed there.

Yeah, but that's all quite subjective and doesn't really equal knowing your metal as such - which developed in the late 1960's and has its roots in blues and psych... whether you like it or not. If some teenager or a twentysometihng of the 2020's doesn't think it rocks hard enough to qualify it's still the original heavy metal - and not really for them/you to decide that it isn't.

^ Agreed. My criterion was not the "rocking or not" aspect; but, as I said before, the "edgy" metal feeling. Black Sabbath had a bit of it, Deep Purple had a touch of it, but Led Zeppelin never had it. Yet, Led Zeppelin ROCKS! Even extremely solidly rocks sometimes. But I feel no "metal" in their music. You may think differently, for sure.
