I love how most musicians I know wouldn’t be able to hear a difference in a blindtest, providing we’re talking the same pick-ups and whatnot.....yet keep on buying the pricey stuff.
I figure it’s a penis thing
If the amp is blasting, you won't hear a difference, but with a clean tone there is a huge difference between Fender and Gibson. For example the first lick of the solo of "Comfortably Numb" is unmistakable Fender. You can't get that sound with a Gibson.

Sure there is a huge difference in the clean tone...but most of it stems from the pickups. Change out the pickups of the two and get someone to play them for you from behind a curtain. See if you can spot the pidgeon

If you change the pickups then it's a Frankenstein guitar, neither Fender or Gibson. Wink

Yep
If we’re going strictly by how cool it looks in the hand of x artist..then my fave Fender is the Telecaster. Fave Gibson? The Firebird
As for what sound I prefer it entirely depends on the music. I like the way my buddy solved this by purchasing a “guitar-combo” (a Schecter I believe) that has both tones available in a quick-switch solution. Instead of carrying around a Strat and a Les Paul, he’s got the two-in-one...and it’s light. Looks pretty awesome to boot.

Edith: Now I remember. He’s got the Schecter Ultra lll:

Both are great guitars and they sound good in the hands of any good player...with a decent amp.
Personally I would rather own a  Gibson Les Paul Jr ,Gibson SG, or 1959 Les Paul Cherry or sunburst for pure fun...but I also like old Fender Strats like the one Snic showed. Telecasters are fine but the sound can be a bit too trebly for me.

Just for conversation...my friend Bill used to own a '51 blonde Nocaster (when Telecaster name was not used due to a legal problem)...he had to sell it for money.  Unhappy

One of the only benefits of going through the entirety of the Covid 19 nightmare was that my Uncle Sam bought me these two beauties:

I've owned and played both Gibson (Les Paul, Explorer) and Fender (Stratocaster) guitars.
They each have their pluses and minuses and their respective sounds and uses.
But, for my budget, and due to the fact that I use 7 string guitars most of the time,
I've been a solid Ibanez guy for quite a long span.
However, if the guitar feels and sounds right, I don't particularly care what brand name is affixed to it.

Telecasters are insane. If one sounds too trebly to you, you just get your pickup replaced and voila! :)
