RIP John Wetton - Progressive Rock Music Forum

Sad news indeed. As a much younger man (talking both me and John), John was front and center of my favorite incarnation of my favor band, King Crimson. To my way of thinking, John was one half of one of the greatest, if not the greatest, rock rhythm sections ever. And, his voice fit the music perfectly.

My first KC album was a Young Person's Guide to KC. I think this came out 1975ish. I was completely taken aback by the music, but, in particular by the song Starless. When I tried to purchase the album containing this masterpiece, I - as I am sure many others did - picked up the album Starless and Bible Black, which of course doesn't have the song Starless. But, as you did in those times, if you invested your hard earned cash in an album, you invested time in getting to know the album. Much of SBB eluded me for quite a while, but as you did in those days, you kept plugging away at it. Today, I think SBB is a masterpiece, and is by far and away my favorite album of KC.

Thank you John for the great music that was a fundamental component to the soundtrack of my life, and a fundamental component of making me who I am today.

As one of the older crowd, I'm well aware that we "all gotta go sometime". But what really disturbs me is seeing how many music artists that I have revered succumbing to the horrible and emaciating disease of cancer. Bert Jansch, Chris Squire, David Bowie, and now John Wetton. A poor reward for people who gave so much pleasure to others.

RIP John. I'll brake my 30 year oath and play "Heat of the Moment" in tribute to you.

This is so sad I almost couldn't speak. RIP John, you were such great musician. Another year of loss is starting? Oh, well... :-((

I am gratified, however, that they included a clip of Red rather than Heat of the Moment. A musician of great versatility and talent, running the gamut between King Crimson and Asia, I have listened to him many times and in many different moods. We proggers were worried about this last year, and it has sadly come to pass. The man is gone, but may his music never die out.

	I've had "Easy Money", the track that introduced me to Wetton and his stunning voice, in my head since I read the sad news earlier today. RIP John.

	DAMN !!! I had seen the posting on Carl Palmer's site a week or so ago about him missing the Cruise to the Edge gig. I knew bad news would follow. I met him briefly during the initial ASIA tour way back and he was a humble and gracious man. Edited by JD - January 31 2017 at 16:08

	Oof! I know last year was bad, but his death combined with Jaki's make this year hit harder. Can't say it's a shock though...that cancer is awful. RIP to one of the best (and my favorite of the classic guys). Those live recordings from the 70s really show his power and grandeur. Time for another trip through the Starless box. Thanks for everything

	I remember hearing a live version of 'Part of the Load' by 'Family' when John was with them; that deep rumbling, rolling bass riff just propelled the whole thing in a way i hadnt heard before- that sound was developed when he joined Crimson.. plus that voice!.. Another legend takes his bow and takes his leave. RIP and thanks for the legacy you leave behind.

	Good grief, RIP John and thanks for the music! Damned cancer.... Just mind boggling that these losses keep coming in such a small time span. Been away from listening to music over the past couple of weeks, so it looks like I will be having a marathon mix of King Crimson/Asia for John, Can for Jaki, Allman Brothers for Butch Trucks, and Mott the Hoople for Overend Watts.

	RIP, great singer and bassist, and an influence on many prog acts in both realms. Probably my favourite piece sung by him is "The Night Watch", with "Exiles" and "Starless" not far behind.
