If your name was Maynard you'd be annoyed too.

Well, he could have been named Garth Brooks.

Same thing with belligerent fans of Dream Theater and Radiohead.

You should be banned for putting Radiohead in the same sentence with that abomination.

No,  you didn't piss me off. I was merely saying that I didn't know what was the cause of your fans, fanboys and any other admirers, but that you probably deserve them. Smile

I just realized, I made it sound like I was saying I HAD fanboys. LOL I meant fanboys of other things, I don't have fans as far as I know. Tongue

Obviously, I'm no fanboy but I do have Lateralus and 10,000 days in my collection. I've seen them live at what is now the Santander arena in Reading, Pa. and they were good. I have since sold off the rest of my Tool collection along with other items in order to help finance acquiring a mobile fidelity recording of "Close to the Edge".

What is this 'mobile fidelity recording' of CTTE you speak of?

I always get him and John Maynard Keynes confused with each other.

Fanboys/girls seem like an unnecessary evil that crosses lines in entertainment media everywhere. It's better to ignore them, and let them make asses of themselves. I'm a big Tool fan, but not enough to devote endless time to studying meaningless facts about them. As long as you derive a form of pleasure from the music, you're as big a fan as anyone else.

I think once you've started "defending the party platform", if you will, fandom has gone overboard.  What I mean is that their defense of the idol in question, whether it be a band, company, or even political issue, is unconditional.  That band/company/party could do no wrong in their eyes, which simply defies common logic.

Example: Helmet is one of my all time favorite bands.  I've been listening to them for over 20 years, my guitar work is heavily influenced by them, and a few of their albums are in my all time top 25.  But they are far from infallible.  Their early material from the late 80s/early 90s (pre-Meantime) is very noisy and chaotic, which doesn't suit me, and their last album, Seeing Eye Dog (which I had to look up because I forgot its name), was not good.  As much as Page Hamilton is one of my musical heroes, I'm far from a place where he could make an album of him farting into a microphone, and me calling it genius.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, of course, but once I notice fanboy tendencies in people, I tend to disregard what they have to say.

Will peeps please stop mentioning fan girls/boys! When it concerns David Bowie well ok I probably will lick his boots Big smile
Anyway, somehow you guys/girls make it seem as if it's a bad thing to be a fan (a hardcore fan even, if you will), I resent that and don't like it, don't know why exactly but why would anyone say such things anyway? Bands need fans and they in turn spread the word, some fans start to appreciate other bands too, it's an endless great cycle thus why would any of you say fanboy or fangirl in a degrading manner? What is wrong with that? What is wrong with you peeps?

I think Maynard tries too hard and cares a lot about his "I don't care" persona.

At least here in the US, "fanboy" has a negative connotation, and is typically defined as someone who feels like whoever he/she is a fan of can do no wrong.

People can support whatever they want, of course.  I think we all understand how supporting bands helps them.  However, when that support turns into vitriol towards anyone who feels differently than they do, that's fanboy-ism, if you will.

There are fans, and there are "fanboys".  I don't think anyone here is saying it's a problem to support bands, or even be a "hardcore fan".

Well put. Also, fanboys/girls are the type to believe they are superior to other fans because they know a lot about a particular group. There's nothing wrong with knowing a lot about a group, but when you believe that knowledge holds you in a higher standing, that's just being a pretentious t**t.

Aha! Ok, now I understand thus it's another name to describe fanatic fans, gotcha Wink That name is too sweet to describe that kind of fan. Pinch

There's another type of fan as well. The anti-fan. After a yes gig I was on board a tube (underground in London) seated across from three fellow concert attendees. One mentioned that had Yes played Starship Trouper (there were a lot of hits during this Magnification era concert) he would have walked out he would have been so annoyed.

? Really?

Had they done so I would have been quite pleased. Too put it mildly.

But this was a fan who... I think... wanted a "not trading on past glories..." Actually I'm not sure. But it's a bit like he was some sort of authority and Yes had to play his set for his approval. Or they were sell outs... etc.

Btw, great gig. Wakeman and Howe trading licks (so to speak). Great.  <- "a technical "fanboy" type term used in complete and utter objectivity.

Now firmly back on topic...

As for Tool - well don't tell 'em but (while I still have 10 K Years) I went and bought the first 2 albums yonks ago. When playing them I felt the blood drain from my face at what I thought was the awfulness of the content and immediately exchanged them for a couple of Camel albums I needed on CD. A much better way of getting my lead guitar fix. I've only ever done that once before - can't remaber thae band. German, their 3rd album. Have to consult my Jerry Lucky Boys Book of Prog Fanboydom.

Clap

Although APC is OK, it is not something I would listen with the seriousness I listen to Tool.
